Photosynthesis
Let’s talk about light!
Why do leaves change color?
Pigments!
Chlorophyll - Converts Red and blue light into chemical energy. Two types: Chlorophyll A and Chlorophyll B
Carotenoids – Converts Red, Orange, and Yellow light to chemical energy.
What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process of converting light energy to chemical energy and storing it in the bonds of sugar.
Photosynthesis Equation
Where does it happen?
Chloroplast- Battery factory of the cell. Contains chlorophyll.
“Chloro”- means green "phyll”- means pigment
Thylakoid- Where light reaction occurs.
Grana- Stack of thylakoids.
Stroma-where Dark part of photosynthesis occurs.
Where does it happen?
Photosynthesis in two parts.
Part One- Light ReactionPart Two –Dark Reaction
Light Reaction
Light Reaction makes ATP and NADH
Dark Reaction aka Calvin Cycle
Runs through twice!
Makes two three carbon sugars that combine to make ONE glucose molecule.
