PHOTOSYNTHESIS
What is it??Why do we need it??

Photosynthesis
• A process that converts carbon dioxide into organic compounds
![Page 3: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
In other words:
• The chemical process by which plants capture sunlight and use it to convert carbon dioxide
and water into food.
![Page 4: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
What uses photosynthesis??
• Green plants – Flowers – Trees– Some algea– A few various forms of bacteria
**Mostly flowers and trees**
![Page 5: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Most essential components of photosynthesis:
• These include:– Direct sunlight– Water– Carbon dioxide – Chlorophyll
![Page 6: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Who benefits from photosynthesis?
• The plants/algea/bacteria
• Other living beings such as animals
• Even humans!!
![Page 7: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Parts of Photosynthesis
![Page 8: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Stomates• Microscopic hole in the stem and leaves
of plants
• This is where carbon dioxide enters the plant
![Page 9: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
At the same time, water is
entering the plant through
the roots.
![Page 10: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
After being absorbed by the roots:
The water travels all the way through the stem to reach
the leaves.
![Page 11: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Chlorophyll
• Contained in the plant
• This is what makes the green color
![Page 12: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
What does chlorophyll do besides make the plant green??
When sunlight falls on the plant, the chlorophyll
captures the energy in it, and stores it for further
use.
![Page 13: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
This energy is eventually
used to convert water into
hydrogen and oxygen.
![Page 14: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
This is combined with the carbon dioxide to produce the food for the
plant
Hydrogen
![Page 15: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
The oxygen is let out through the stomates
OXYGEN
![Page 16: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
*Hydrogen is used to produce food
*Oxygen is let out as waste product
![Page 17: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Photosynthesis is important
in the respiration of humans
and animals
We use the oxygen produced by this to fulfill our oxygen intake to live.
![Page 18: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
• Proteins
• Fats
• Water soluble sugars
Photosynthesis also produces:
![Page 19: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
WE DEPEND ON PLANTS (OR ANIMALS THAT FEED ON PLANTS) TO GET THESE BECAUSE OUR BODIES
CANNOT PRODUCE THESE NUTRIENTS ON THEIR OWN
![Page 20: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Photosynthesis plays a vital role in regulating the life
cycle on earth!
![Page 21: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Sunlight, water, and the plants work together to supply the raw
source of energy to us and help us breathe in oxygen to live on.
![Page 22: Photosynthesis](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062703/5551390fb4c905b3598b54de/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Life without photosynthesis would
be impossible!!!
