De internationale documentaire fotografie is volop in beweging en zit nu in een fase van ingrijpende veranderingen. Steeds meer documentaire fotografen zijn op zoek naar nieuwe manieren om hun verhaal te vertellen en te presenteren, een zoektocht die uitgaat van de unieke kwaliteit van het stilstaande beeld. Maar hoe kunnen zij voldoen aan de eisen van dagbladen en tijdschriften, die op hun beurt naarstig op zoek zijn naar e!ectieve en attractieve manieren om met hun lezers te communiceren, online of via mobiele media? Hoe kunnen fotografen hun instrumentarium uitbreiden om hun verhaal nog overtuigender te vertellen? Blijft het stilstaande beeld dan nog het vertrekpunt van de documentaire fotografie? En welke mogelijkheden heb je om een vertaal te vertellen?

Nederland heeft een groot gebrek aan kennis op dit terrein. De internationale conferentie PhotoStories – van slideshow tot webdocumentaire wil in die leemte voorzien. Zij wil laten zien hoe je – gebruikmakend van verschillende media – een verhaal kunt vertellen en daarmee nieuwe perspectieven schetsen voor de toekomst van het medium. Dat past in het streven van het Fotomuseum om vernieuwing in de fotografie te stimuleren. Drie dagen lang biedt de conferentie een uitgebreid en gevarieerd programma met lezingen, workshops, discussies en ontmoetingen van en met internationaal gerenommeerde sprekers op het gebied van media, film en fotografie.

PhotoStories is een initiatief van de voormalig intendant ‘documentaire fotografie’ van het Fonds BKVB, Annelies Kuiper, en wordt georganiseerd door het Nederlands Fotomuseum in nauwe samenwerking met PhotoQ, Paradox, Noorderlicht, IDFA DocLab en Jenny Smets. International documentary photography is in the process of important and sometimes radical changes. An increasing number of documentary photographers is exploring new ways of making and presenting their work, based on the unique qualities of the still image. But how can they cope with the requirements of newspapers and magazines that are searching for e!ective and attractive ways to communicate online or on mobile media? How can photographers enlarge their toolbox to convince the spectator of the significance of what they have to tell? Does still photography remain the basic format for documentary photography? What possibilities are there for new ways of storytelling?

The international conference PhotoStories – Where photography meets multimedia storytelling departs from the assertion that there is a substantial lack of information on this subject in the Netherlands. Its aim is to present us new concepts of storytelling and help us to imagine new perspectives on the future of the medium – very much in line with the Fotomuseum’s ambitions to support innovation in the field of photography. The conference contains a dazzling and packed programme of first class lectures, workshops, meetings and discussions from leading international figures in the field of media, cinema and photography.

This conference is initiated by the former intendant documentary photography of the Fonds BKVB, Annelies Kuiper, and organized by the Nederlands Fotomuseum in close collaboration with a unique set of partners: PhotoQ, Paradox, Noorderlicht, IDFA DocLab and Jenny Smets. 3 DAY WORKSHOP

During PhotoStories the 3-day workshop Multimedia Storytelling for Photographers will be hosted by Henrik Kastenskov from the Danish audiovisual production house Bombay Flying Club. It’s a kick-o! workshop for ten selected photographers who will work on an introduction of their multimedia project. Di!erent aspects and possibilities of storytelling for an online audience will pass by.

OPENING | 20.00 - 22.15 | TODD HEISLER AND PAUL MOAKLEYTodd Heisler works as photographer for the New York Times and will give insight in how new media has entered his projects. Paul Moakley is photo editor at TIME Magazine and highly involved with Lightbox, the new online photo magazine of TIME. By showing di!erent projects he will give a lively image of the role TIME wants to play in the changing media landscape. The evening will be moderated by Martijn de Waal, expert in digital media and society.

He is co-founder of Magnum In Motion and started StoryPlanet to o!er new tools for interactive storytelling. Freelance photographer Gideon Mendel presents di!erent multimedia projects and talks about the consequences he faces as a photographer, working with multimedia.

MINI WORKSHOP INTRODUCTION TO MULTIMEDIA STORYTELLING | 13.00 - 17.15 SIGN UP AT 12.30 This mini workshop will be hosted by Adrian Kelterborn of Magnum in Motion. Participants will learn about the production process of Magnum In Motion. In addition, some major technical aspects of multimedia pieces and storytelling techniques will be highlighted, beginners will get an introduction to Final Cut Pro and advanced participants will get one-on-one feedback of their projects. Participants should bring visuals (photo series/video, audio) and a laptop with Final Cut Express and Photoshop installed.

This presentation is all about their approach to photography and multimedia storytelling. Jeremy Mendes has been creating interactive projects for over 10 years. He will be sharing his experiences as interactive director at the National Film Board of Canada.

MINI WORKSHOP WIREFRAMES | 13.00 - 17.15 SIGN UP AT 12.30 This mini workshop will be hosted by Bjarke Myrthu from StoryPlanet. Myrthu: ‘In this workshop we experiment with creating interactive stories where we break the linear nature of traditional formats and work with a new hybrid form placed between magazine, movie and game. You’ll look at examples and analyze what is possible, technically and content wise. The participants will create their own paper prototype of a story idea, and learn the basics of preparing an interactive story concept.’ Participants should bring their concept/idea of a multimedia project.

Adrian Kelterborn is the lead multimedia producer of Magnum in Motion (MIM), the multimedia department of Magnum Photos. Magnum in Motion was founded in 2004 to build a stronger online presence for the agency, it assembles visual narratives for online and o"ine platforms, including screenings in museums, festivals, and workshops. Kelterborn was born and raised in Basel/Switzerland, he studied film and video at the University of Art and Design in Zurich. After graduation in 2005, he directed and produced two documentaries, Acheb in Albania and Neue Weltgeschichten/Fondation Herzog. Alexandre Brachet is e-producer and CEO of Upian, one of the world’s major players in web documentary making. In recent years, Upian has produced or co-produced some of the most highly regarded web documentaries, including La cité des mortes, Thanatorama and Gaza Sderot. In 2010 Upian presented Prison Valley, a new kind of interactive road movie: a journey into the American prison industry, directed by Philippe Brault and David Dufresne and co-produced by French TV channel Arte. Bjarke Myrthu conceived the original idea for Storyplanet in 2005 and slowly developed and matured into the concept you see today. Storyplanet builds tools to make interactive narratives. Before Myrthu launched Storyplanet he co-founded Magnum In Motion. He is also the producer of several award winning online documentaries and author of the book The Digital Storyteller. Before he joined Magnum he produced a number of independent web documentaries, among them the price winning The Enemy Within. Caspar Sonnen is a festival organiser and curator specialised in independent cinema and digital media art. As New Media Coordinator of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, he has succesfully developed digital festival strategies and online initiatives. Gideon Mendel is regarded as one of the world’s leading contemporary photographers. His intimate style of socially engaged image making has earned him international acclaim winning six World Press Photo Awards, the Eugene Smith Award for Humanistic Photography and the Amnesty International Media Award. In his current practice he is engaged with a variety of projects often involving collaborative work along with a mix of photography and video. Henrik Kastenskov was born north of Copenhagen in the Shakesperian town of Elsenore, Denmark. A lifelong interest in modern history and journalism combined with a visual talent, lead to a natural interest in photojournalism and social documentary. Seeing the potential in taking online journalism a step further, he co-founded the multimedia agency Bombay Flying Club together with friend and colleague Poul Madsen. Jeremy Mendes is a Vancouver based artist with over 10 years experience working on interactive projects. He specializes in Art Direction, Creative Direction, Design and Illustration. Jurriaan Esmeijer is lead designer and event producer at Holland’s leading transmedia production outfit, Submarine. Spanning film, animation, non-fiction and interactive genres, Submarine boasts a roster of award-winning productions. Esmeijer worked on a wide range of transmedia projects including the multiple-award-winning online experience Collapsus. He is currently working with renowned documentary director Marjoleine Boonstra on Keep on Steppin, a layered narrative mosaic that reflects on human dignity and resilience. Paul Moakley has been the deputy photo editor of TIME since 2010. He covers national news and special projects such as Person of the Year and the TimeFrames photo blog. Previously he was senior photo editor at Newsweek and photo editor of PDN (Photo District News). Moakley is an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City as well as a photographer and filmmaker. Todd Heisler is currently a sta! photographer for the New York Times. In September 2010, he won an Emmy as a member of the New York Times One in 8 Million team. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2006 for his haunting, behind-the-scenes look at funerals for Colorado Marines who return from Iraq in caskets. He was also a member of the Rocky Mountain News sta! that won a Pulitzer in 2003 for their coverage of Colorado wildfires. Yvo Zijlstra is educated in graphic design. Zijlstra was part of design collective Hard Werken and worked independent under the name Knockout. In 2001 he joined Antenna-Men, a group of media architects based in Rotterdam. He does design for both books and multimedia. According to Zijlstra design is as a way of storytelling, transformed either into ink or electricity. HENRIK KASTENSKOV ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY AND NEW MEDIA‘MULTIMEDIA IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO’

The Danish photojournalist and multimedia producer Henrik Kastenskov from production house Bombay Flying Club (BFC) hosts the 3-day workshop Multimedia Storytelling for Photographers during the first PhotoStories conference. An interview about ‘the platform of the future.’

What were your main objectives for founding BFC?‘We started our production company partly out of frustration. Poul Madsen and myself worked as photojournalists for national Danish newspapers. At one point it was just not satisfying anymore, the size of our images reduced more and more, photos were often tucked away in the corner of the paper. In 2005 we got in touch with web documentaries, which intrigued us instantly as the web as a media platform is a unique and exciting medium.’ So you started to work on your first web documentary right away?‘Yes, in 2006 we produced The Ardoyne Suicides, a webdoc about a suicide spate in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The

project was filmed in Ardoyne and Glenbryn, two small neighbouring communities on di!erent sides of the sectarian divide at the outskirts of Belfast. There, 13 people committed suicide during a six-week period at the end of 2003 and early 2004. The story is divided into short chapters and focuses on the deaths of three young men during this period.’

Was it well received?‘We were awarded 2nd place in the Best of Photojournalism category, organised by the National Press Photographers Association. It was a great start of our new mission: Taking photojournalism a step further. To this day we still receive email responds to the story on a regular basis.’

What is your opinion about photography and new media?‘It’s the only way to go. Due to the recession of the print media, the web became the main platform. It is important that big media find a new way to tell stories, and from that earn money. Because the web allows everyone of us to publish stories worldwide, it can lead to a decline in quality, and without a high quality in reporting, journalism on the web is obsolete. This is the major challenge of the platform.’ So it is a challenging field for photographers?‘Oh yes, one of the biggest challenges is to convey the fact that audio is a vital part of photography. Bad sound kills great photography. If the audio is crap people click away instantly. The trick is to approach the web as a unique medium with its own set of rules. You have to tell a complete

story in 5 to 15 minutes. That is a very dense form of documentary. It is pretty hard to narrow a story down and keep it subtle at the same time.’ What is your favourite multimedia project ever?‘Bjarke Myrthu produced an interactive documentary in 2004, The Enemy Within. It still sets the standard, even though it is seven years old. It is very well made. The sound, photos, storyline, graphics, it is the whole package that makes it such an amazing project. He really pushed the possibilities of the medium.’

Do you consider your latest project, A Matter of Decency, equally successful?‘A Matter of Decency was very much a Danish story, which I really liked. In 2009 we looked at our portfolio and realised that we went everywhere but Denmark. The story is about Danish citizens who choose to break the law in order to help underground refugees. In terms of hits it was not so successful, in terms of impact it was. We won the first prize in Best of Multimedia in the Danish Picture of the Year awards, so we did something right. We weren’t able to push it to Danish media, which was predictable because web documentaries in Denmark’s big media really hasn’t moved beyond Soundslides. I regret that Denmark is so conservative. APP [documentary]: a tablet and/or mobile application that allows direct non URL access to the content of the project. Content can be partially or fully downloadable, static or updated on regular basis according to project’s concept.

Audio-visual storytelling: a narration that combines audio and visual material. A technique, that is not bound to the web as a presentation platform and can be both digital and analogue.

Crossmedia / Cross platform: storytelling spread across di!erent presentation platforms. Initially introduced first by mass media as a new franchising mode.

Interactive storytelling: a mode of narration in which the user can influence the development of the story in real time. Often projects that use such mode of navigation have an explicit database structure.

Media convergence: phenomenon involving the interlocking of computing and information technology companies, telecommunications networks, and content providers from the publishing worlds of newspapers, magazines, music, radio, television, films, and entertainment software.

Multimedia storytelling: combination of various media in one narrative. It is wide enough to include web- and application-based projects along with other non-print audiovisual narratives.

Touch doc: a term introduced to describe the iAPP documentary ‘Money and Speed’, 2011

Transmedia: same as crossmedia. Described by H. Jenkins (2006) as: storytelling across multiple forms of media with each element making distinctive contributions to a fan’s understanding of the story world. By using di!erent media formats, transmedia creates ‘entry points’ through which consumers can become immersed in a story world.
