The Tools Panel• Video…• The tools panel is on the left hand side

and has 4 sections:

Select, Crop and Measure

Retouch and Painting

Drawing and Type

3D and Navigation

The Tools Panel

• Once a tool is selected the menu across the top of the screen changes to show options for that tool:

Select Crop and Measure ToolsICON TOOL NAME USE

Move Move Selections or Layers

Marquee Makes rectangular, elliptical, single row and single column selections

Lasso Makes freehand, polygonal (straight edged) and magnetic selections

Quick Selection Paints selections

Crop Crops an image

Eyedropper Samples pixels

Retouch and Paint Tools

ICON TOOL NAME USE

Spot Healing Removes Imperfections

Brush Paints the foreground color

Clone Stamp Paints with a sample of the image

History Brush Paints with a duplicate of the selected state or snapshot

Eraser Erases pixels or reverts to a saved history state

Gradient Creates a gradient

Blur Blurs pixels

Dodge Lightens pixels in an image

Pen Draws a vector path

Horizontal Type Creates a type layer

Path Selection Allows you to manipulate a path

Rectangle Draws vector shapes

3 and Navigation Tools

ICON TOOL NAME USE

3D Rotate Rotates 3D objects

3D Orbit Changes the view of 3D objects

Hand Navigates the page

Zoom Increases and decreases the relative size of the view

Hidden Tools• A small triangle at the bottom right

corner of a tool button means that are additional tools hidden under the tool button.

• Click and Hold on the tool to access the other tools:

Moving around the screen

• Zoom– There are multiple ways to zoom in and out

on a picture:1. Use zoom on the View menu

2. Use the zoom tool button (Can sweep an area to zoom in on)

3. Hit CNTL+/CNTL-/CNTL0

• Hand tool– Use the hand tool to grab and drag the

screen around

Summary

• Photoshop calls parts of the screen “panels” not tool bars, etc.

• Toolbar has hidden tools which maybe selected by clicking and holding a tool button.

• Use zoom and the hand tool to navigate to the part of the image you wish to work with
