REPORT Smt. Savithribai Phule 189 th Birth Anniversary Celebrations Date: 3 rd January 2020 Organised by Women Study Centre, UCW and Women Cell, UCW Smt. Savitribai Phule 189 th Birth Anniversary Celebrations was organized by Women Cell, UCW and Women Study Centre, UCW on 3 rd January 2020 at Prof. Pramada Devi PG Seminar Hall. The celebrations began with prayer and lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries - Chief Guest Prof. K. Lakshmi, Former Principal, UCASS, Guest of Honor Mrs. Arunodaya Vimala, Social Activist, Principal Prof. A. Roja Rani, Vice-Principal Dr. M. Kavitha, Director, Women Study Centre Dr. V. Srilatha and Coordinator, Women Cell, Dr. G. Vijaya Lakshmi. Mrs. Arunodaya Vimala, Telugu Balladeer and Social Activist, inspired the students with her motivating lecture and urged them to remember their roots always to which they belong to, respect teachers and parents, always work hard and achieve one’s goalthrough determination and sincere efforts. On request, Mrs. Vimalakka and her group delivered a strong message with her song and enthralled the audience with her powerful voice and a video was also shown to this effect to the audience. Prof. K. Lakshmi, Chief Guest of the Program and Former Principal, UCASS, have narrated the incidents from the life history of Smt. Savithribai Phule, the hardships faced by her and her Husband Mahatma Jyothirao Phule, difficult tasks taken by them to make the women educated and empowered. She suggested that today’s students have many privileges in their life which they are enjoying due to the sacrifices made by many great leaders and social activists like Smt.Savithribai Phule andhence make the best use of the opportunities that would come their way. At the end, the prize winners of the Poster presentation on the topic “SmtSavithribai Phule” were given away the prizes by the Chief Guest and Guest of Honor. PHOTOS

One Day Workshop On

“Women and Health – Current Challenges and Future Formulas”

The inaugural session for the One Day Workshop on “Women and Health - Current Challenges and Future Formulas” was held at Prof. Pramada DeviPG seminar hall, UCW at 10 AM on 3rd August 2019.

Dr.A.Manjula, Obstetrician and Gynecologist, HOD,Maxcure hospitals was the Chief Guest and Keynote speaker for the Inaugural Session. Dr.Sushila Narayan, Breast Surgeon, Omega hospitals was the Guest of Honor. Principal Prof.A.RojaRani, Vice principal, Dr.P.Saritha Reddy,Vice-prinicpal(Hostels) Dr.K.Shailaja, Coordinator of Women cellDr.G.Vijayalakshmi were all part of the inaugural program. Dr.Sushila Narayan emphasized on the importance of awareness and right knowledge about breast cancer and the importance of self-examination. Dr.A.Manjula, in her keynote address explained the significance of menstrual cycle in a women’s life. She elaborated on the importance of Oestrogen hormone in preventing early fractures and heart attacks in women. She gave a lucid explanation on how significant it is for a girl to take care of her health and have a proper orientation towards career and life. Principal and Vice-principals also emphasized on the significance of Women’s health and congratulated the Women cell for organizing a very useful workshop.

After Tea Break, the first technical session was by Dr. Sushila Narayan, Consultant Breast Surgeon, Omega Hospitals, Hyderabad spoke on the topic “Overview of Cancer”. She explained about the different types of cancer, with emphasis on breast cancer, signs and symptoms of breast cancer and also the risk factors involved in breast cancer. She emphasized on the importance of diagnosing the disease in the early stages so that it can be cured. She also elaborated various early detection methods of breast cancer and has demonstrated the Self-Examination method (SEM). The entire session was very informative and interactive and the speaker has demonstrated the SEM to detect the lumps in the breast models with the students participating in it.

The next session of the program was by Dr. Pradeep Keshri, Surgical Oncologist, KIMS BIBI Cancer Hospital, Hyderabad and spoke on the topic “Cancer – Introduction and treatment”. He explained about the various tests to detect the disease and also about the treatment and its prevention methods. He opined that cancer is now curable and if it is diagnosed in the early or initial stages. The last speaker was Dr. K. C. Goutham Reddy, Radiation Oncologist, KIMS BIBI Cancer Hospital, Hyderabad gave a powerpoint presentation on cancer. He elaborated about the various tests to detect the different types of cancer. He spoke about the

myths and truths about the cancer. The session was an interactive with the active participation from the students and staff and addressed the questions and queries raised by them. Mr. Moid Sameer, Senior Operations Manager,KIMS BIBI Cancer Hospital, Hyderabad told about the services offered by the Hospital and free Health Camp organized at the ESRA Hall. He thanked Women Cell, UCW for giving them the opportunity to conduct the Health Camp.

A parallel session wherein Free Medical Camp was conducted by KIMS BIBI Cancer Hospital, Hyderabad at ESRA Hall, UCW from 11.00 AM onwards. Staff and students have availed the opportunity and participated in medical camp.

“Balance for Better – Equal Opportunities for Better Future’(in connection with International Women’s Day 2019)

The inaugural program of the One Day Workshop began with the welcome note by Convenor of the Workshop Dr. G. Vijaya Lakshmi, Coordinator, Women Cell and Study Centre, UCW. Prof. A. Roja Rani, Principal, UCW motivated the faculty and the students to surge aheadin achieving one’s goals overthrowing the difficulties aside. She reminded that gone are the days when the women folk are restricted from doing challenging tasks and now women are part of the coal mines working on par with the men. Dr. Saritha Reddy, Vice-Principal, UCW inspired the audienceopining that women are a great source of energy, inner strength and determination and can achieve anything she can aspire for. Dr. K. Ratna, Coordinator of the Workshop and Convenor, IWSA has suggested that the workshops like this would always bring the women from various walks of life to the fore and help in having constructive deliberations. The Chief Guest of the Inaugural function Mrs. Deepika Reddy, renowned Kuchipudi Exponent, inspired the audience with her graceful presence and emphasised that women need to focus on achieving equal opportunities as their counterpart and at the same time, also focus on the one’s integrity and character that are bound to the cultural identity of oneself. The Guest of Honor of the Inaugural function Mrs. Y. Sridevi, Director and Principal, Pinnacle Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology energised the audience with her power packed words, opined that women need to be respected with esteem and dignity which is her deserving right and should consider herself more superior than other gender.

Session – I:

Speaker: Dr. A. MalathiSyamala, Sr. Medical Officer, Nature Cure Hospital and Director, Vemana Yoga Research Institute.

Significance and advantages of various treatments of Naturopathy, importance of Yoga, meditation and Pranayama, the principles of Naturopathy and their role in improvement of women health.

Session – II:Theme - ‘Mobility of life’

Speaker: Dr. S. Bhavani, Chief Medical Officer, Nature Cure Hospital.

Importance of sustainable exercises to lead a healthy life, practical sessions demonstrating the various sustainable practices of exercises, importance of Pranayama which is now considered as a way to self-identification and Patanjali Yogasutras.

Session – III: Theme – Atomic Energy serving the society – Role of engineers to meet the challenges

Speaker: Dr. Sheela, Deputy Chief Executive, Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), Hyderabad

Clean energy, various sources of clean energy, various aspects of nuclear energy, industrial applications of radio isotopes, awareness about the fact that atomic energy is not dangerous as against the society’s notion and applications of atomic energy in the field of medicine, agriculture, sterilization of medical products, etc.

Session – IV:

Speaker : Mrs. N. Vijayasree, Practicising Advocate, Hyderabad

Gender inequality prevailing in the society, various constitutional provisions providing equal rights to women viz., right to life, right to freedom, etc. Constitutional remedies provided by our Indian Constitution, domestic violence in our society and protection of women from it, treatment of women in society in general and problems faced by them.

Session – V:

Speaker: Dr. M. Sujatha, Former Head and Senior Consultant, Department of Clinical Genetics, Institute of Genetics, Hyderabad

Women Health and various gynaecological issues of women, pathophysiology of Amenorrhea, types of numerical abnormalities, types of structural abnormalities, changes to be made in our lifestyle like balanced diet, day to day exercises, etc.

The valedictory program of the One Day Workshop began with a brief report on the deliberations held as part of the workshop by renowned guest speakers given by Convenor of the Workshop Dr. G. Vijaya Lakshmi, Coordinator, Women Cell and Study Centre, UCW.The Chief Guest of the valedictory program Dr. D. Shailaja, Sr. Principal Scientist, IICT explained about the various developmental activities undertaken by IICT as part of the regular curriculum of the Institute and opportunities available to the science students to pursue their dreams to study beyond undergraduate studies, become future scientists and contribute to the society. The Guest of Honour of the valedictory program Mrs. Deepthi Ravula, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), WE-HUB inspired all the audience by citing examples from her life wherein she moved onto become a successful entrepreneur from a engineering graduate.

International Yoga Day and World Music Day Celebrations21st June 2019

REPORT

International Yoga Day and World Music Day were organized by Women Cell, UCW in collaboration with Department of Physical Education, UCW on 21st June 2019. As a part of the World Music Day, the College Choir group under the guidance of Dr. Rupasri, Department of Genetics, have rendered mesmerising songs which enthralled the audience.

Dr. Y. Ramaprabha, Principal and Incharge Secretary of Music College, is an accomplished singer, teacher and an able administrator and one of the resource persons of the program. She spoke on the topic ‘NityajeevanamloNadhayoga’ and highlighted that Indian music has been immensely influencing the music across the world since its inception. She expressed the importance of Nadha yoga in our daily life, which when practised enhances the well-being of human kind.

The Chief Guest of the program Dr. P. Sudarshan Reddy, an octogenarian Yoga Guru addressed the gathering and focussed on the significance of Yoga. He opined that Yoga is a science which aims in accomplishing mental, physical, social and spiritual well-being of oneself. Later, his students have stunned the audience with the demonstration of various asanas like padmasana, mayura asana, suryanamaskara, etc explaining about their health benefits.

Dr. A. Gayathri Devi, Yoga trainer and faculty of UCW have demonstrated the basics of Yoga through the topic “Yoga – A great Indian science”. Her team have systematically performed various basic principles ofYoga starting with pranayama and related breathing exercises to various mudras, physical exercises through asanas to clean yogic nadis were also practically demonstrated to the audience.
