Global Health Fact — Chagas Disease. Chagas disease, is also known as American trypanosomiasis, and is a potentially life-threatening illness caused by the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi). It is found mainly in Latin America, where it is mostly transmitted to humans by the feces of insects known as ‘kissing bugs’. About 6 million to 7 million people are estimated to be infected worldwide. In the United States, it is estimated that more than 300,000 persons are infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. Global Health Fact — Childbirth. In 2014, the average global birth rate among girls aged 15-19 years old was reported as 49 per 1000. Pregnancy and childbirth complications are the second leading cause of death in this age group, globally. While all regions have seen improvement since 2000, most notably in South-East Asia where mortality rates fell from 21 to 9 per 100 000 girls, still approximately 3 million unsafe abortions take place among girls aged 15 to 19 each year. These factors contribute to overall mortality and long-lasting health problems within this global population. Global Health Fact – Malnutrition. According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that malnutrition contributes to more than one third of all child deaths across the globe. Lack of access to nutritious foods, and rising food prices are common causes of malnutrition. An estimated one million children die annually as a consequence of acute malnutrition. Starting in 2000, UNICEF began procuring Ready-to-use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to use in the treatment of malnutrition. RUTF typically is in the form of a paste or biscuit, does not need to be mixed with water, and can be stored for several months without refrigeration. Global Health Fact – Atrial fibrillation. Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in India. Atrial fibrillation is a major risk factor for stroke and its worldwide incidence rate has double over the past twenty years. However, our knowledge of atrial fibrillation is India is very limited. Screening for atrial fibrillation using electrocardiogram can be difficult especially in rural settings, and there is a need for community-based screening programs.

Global Health Fact — Trauma. According to the World Health Organization, over 90% of the yearly 1.24 million deaths from Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) worldwide occur in Low and Middle Income Countries despite these countries having only 53% of the world’s registered vehicles. This disparity is due to increasing numbers of cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles without adequate road infrastructure and lack of organized trauma systems. Fatal RTAs account for 28% of deaths due to unnatural causes in India. 43% of those injured in RTAs die without any medical care due to absence of organized trauma systems.
