ANNIE LEIBOVITZAnnie Leibovitz was born 2nd October, 1949 making her 67 years old. Annie was born in America, Waterbury. Annie Leibovitz is the only woman to very hold a exhibition at London’s National Portrait Gallery. Annie has always been passionate about photography from an early age studying The subject at school and practising her photography whilst she did other jobs.

Her career start in 1970 where she photographed for ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine. Annie worked for the company until 1983 while in this time she became chief photographer. The way she took her photographs for the magazine truly created the Rolling Stone image for the company.

Annie Leibovitz has worked with may different celebrities including The Rolling Stones where she was their personal tour photographer meaning she went on their world tour with the band. Annie has also worked with Joan Armatrading as she photographed his album cover for ‘To The Limit’. Another famous celebrity she has photograph was John Lennon, from The Beatles. She was the last person to very photograph this celebrity as after he finished the shoot with Annie he was sadly shot five hours later. Annie was photographing him for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine as he wouldn’t do it unless him and Yoko were both in the photo together.

Leibovitz has taken this close up picture of this actress so it is clear to see the dialect behind the photo. The actress is positioned to pull parts of the face and stretch out her skin this is portray that she is modelling herself into a different character. This is a method is very popular with actors and actresses as it helps them develop and connect further with the character they’re portraying. For example; Heath Ledger who played the Joker locked himself in a hotel room for 3 moths to help him connect more with his new character. Annie Leibovitz has used a fast shutter speed to reduce the motion blur caused by movement from quick snaps. Anne Leibovitz using a high angle to make the actress look more serious as she has to look up slightly to he camera which makes her look focused. You ca tell she is focused because she is the centre of the image ad you see her facial expression straight away. Another way she is made to look focused is with the lighting. As the lighting is studio lights it as been dimmed just to light up the actress and isn’t too bright so it doesn’t show a happy emotion for example; if we used natural lighting and positioned the subject outside the photo would have a different meaning. However, if it was too dark to make the photo look gloomy or mysterious as that’s what we present darkness with.

This photo is of a very famous actor Leonardo DiCaprio who has been in big films for example, Titanic. The rule of thirds in this picture is very different to many of Anne Leibovitz pictures as Leonardo is off centre meaning he isn’t the first thing that the audience look at. With this picture it makes the audience explore around the page to look for the subject and be surprised to see the actor with a swan. To make the audience explore around the page more the wide shot shows more of the background. However, to make sure the two subjects are what the audience focus on they are the subject meaning it’s a shallow focus shot. As the picture has been taken of actor outside it means that only natural light has been used to reflect the calm mood which is portrayed in this picture. Fast shutter speed to reduce the motion blur caused by movement because it creates as if everything has been stopped and nothing is moving. In addition, to add to the calm atmosphere using the swan shows this as normally they can be violent creatures so showing the swan in a elegant and graceful way conveys this further. Another way this is conveyed is through the emotion on Leonardo DiCaprio's face as it is neutral showing he isn’t effected by the violet creature which is so elegantly wrapped around him. Almost as if he is cradling the animal like a baby to so how delicate and graceful the swan is.

This photo is take another famous actress who has been in films such as; Lord Of The Rings. As this is a close up shot it is clear to the audience to see the emotions she is showing on her face. Rule of thirds of this picture is her as she takes over the whole image as their isn’t anything else in the background or another subject in the frame. As the picture is of the same woman twice layering has been used to show which emotion is more significant than the other. In addition, the way she has bee layered symbolises “The Comedy and Tragedy Masks” which are used in performing arts. When you see pictures of these mask the happier side is always the one which is either bigger or further forward this is why the subject as been positioned like this. As this picture is of an actress the positioning suits the subject. The lighting in the photo shines only on the left side of her face as we can see the shadow of the right side of her face. Doing this means the audience can clearly see the emotion on her face. The studio light is also very bright to reflect that their isn’t a moody atmosphere with the picture. TOM JENKINS

TOM JENKINS Tom Jenkins for 25 years has bee all over the world capturing sporting moments. He has been working for The Guardian and Observer newspapers. As well as working for newspapers Tom Jenkins has also written his own book called ‘In The Moment’. He wrote this in 2012 when theLondon Olympics were taking place.

Tom Jenkins started his sporting photography career as since a young age he has always been Passionate about sports. However, as he wasn’t very good at sport ad he had a huge passion forTaking pictures he merged his too favourite hobbies together to create the perfect career for himself. Doing this meat he still got to have a big interest with sports and go and see live sporting evets while earing money from the photos he was taking.

Throughout his career Tom Jenkins has won may different photographing awards for example; 4 Press Photography awards and 2 Barclays awards. This is just a sample of amazing achievements he has made through his career his first award was won in 1990. That award was ‘Young Press Photographer Of The Year’.

This picture is of Johnny Wilkinson, England rugby player. The player is in the centre of the photograph as he would be the main focus in the rule of thirds as everyone wants to hear from the player who scored the winning points. We know it is him from the big number on his back which is in focus to prove that he is the main focus in the picture and not the other subjects around him, this makes it a shallow focus in a wide angle shot. The wide angle shows how popular the player is and how many people adore him making the subject seem more impressive. However, the subject positioning is breaking the rules slightly because for someone so impressive at this moment he isn’t showing it in his posture. The subject is looking down which normally shows a sign of weakness, for example, if you were taking a picture of a stereotypical ‘nerd’ you would have them looking down to show they’re shy and timid. This subject is positioned like this because of how tired he is after working so hard in the match he has just played. In addition, the natural lighting used in the stadium is bright and all the colours from what the fans are wearing shows that this is a happy moment. As the light is produced by the stadium lights it can be changed to deflected the mood of the match for example, if they had lost the stadium lights wouldn’t be as bright as they’re shown in this picture now. This picture is of a subject scoring a goal, the subject is Rolando who is a well known footballer around the world. To make this photo look more impressive it has been taken with a low angle. Low angles are used to make subjects look bigger for example, if you were taking a picture of a stereotypical ‘bully’ you would use a low angle to show that they’re intimidating. Also, low angle shots can be used to show importance so knowing this we know that the ball is what is being made important. Even though the ball and the goal keeper aren’t in focus and either is the net the shot is still a shallow focus as its only focusing on one subject and that is the player who has scored the goal. This would be done because the subject is the centre of the rule of thirds and you want to focus on him to show his reaction and clearly show who the player who scored the goal in case people think it’s the other player who scored. The lighting and colour used in this photograph makes the picture seem happy. This is because all the natural lights used from the stadium have to be bright anyway so the audience can see what is happening in the match. The colours are all bright as they’re the colours the players are wearing and which the audience are wearing as well. The photographer used a fast shutter speed to reduce the motion blur as you want to capture what happening in one single shot which is clear.

This is a photo taken of a Paralympian. As the subject is on his own he will be used for advertising the Paralympics. As the subject is a Paralympian using rule of thirds means his disability is one of the first thing that catches your eye so it is clear to the audience who this person is. As he is an athlete you want to convey his strength and mighty in the photo and the low angle conveys this well. The low angle is used to make the subject look more impressive and powerful as it makes everything around seem smaller and makes the audience believe he is stronger than they’re. To convey the idea of the subject being mighty and strong the photo is a shallow focus so only the subject is all that you focus on. Doing this makes you as an audience drawn into the subject and keeps your attention just on him. Another way of conveying the strength and might of the athlete again is with rule of thirds. As he is the only thing in centre of the photograph proves he is most important as nothing else is around him. In addition, the photo doesn’t just convey the idea of strength it also shows the focus that the athlete has. This is shown by the natural light used in the photo because it isn’t too bright for example, if someone was happy with the lights would be really bright. Also, because the natural light is formed by the blue sky behind him makes the audience know he is focus as blue is the colour you associate with focus and calm moods.

MARIO TESTINO

MARIO TESTINO Mario Eduardo Testino Silva was born 30th October 1954 meaning he is currently 61 years old. Mario Testino is originally from Peru. His photographing career start in London, 1976 and this is where Testino studied photography after dropping his other subjects which were law and Economics. To help his photography career get more well known Mario Testino died his hair pink to help him stand out to other photographers as this way he was more likely to get noticed.

Testino’s work first appeared in Vogue in 1983 which helped start his career a lot more. Since thenMario Testino’s work as appeared in many different popular magazines for example, V Magazine and Vanity Fair. Mario Testino’s style of photography is fashion he has also worked with very big brands such as; Calvin Klein, Burberry, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren and Chanel. This is just a few examples of the brands he is worked with in the fashion. Its not only fashion brands he has captured. One of his most well known photos is of Princess Diana, Princess of wales which he took in 1997. Since then he has also captured photos of other royal family members such as Prince William and Kate when they announced their engagement. Also, he photographed Princess Charlotte on her christening day.

This photo is taken as a close up shot as then it clearly shows the expression in both the subjects faces. To show their expressions clearly the studio lights are shown directly onto the subjects. In the photo it is clear that the man is copying the dog expression automatically making us as an audience believe that the dog has more power. However, as the man is copying the dogs expression makes us believe that both of the subjects are both intimating and dangerous to be around as they look violent. Using studio lights also creates shadows to show the audience that the dog is further forward than the man making the dog more important as he is closer to the camera. Also, as it is a close up with shallow focus proves that the subjects have power as the background is simple is the only thing you are focused on are them. As the photo is a close up straight away both subjects take over the frame meaning the rule of thirds there isn’t many gaps where the subjects aren’t included. Fast shutter speed to reduce the motion blur caused by the subjects moving around especially the dog as you cant control its actions. When you look at this photo you don’t feel happy or calm and that isn’t only conveyed through the expression of the subjects but it used by the colours used. The main colours are; grey, black and brown and these colours are associated with negative things such as; death, night-time, evil, gloominess and anger so this creates unhappy and gloomy thoughts when the audience see the picture.

The picture is taken with a wide shot with a deep focus so everything is clear for the audience to see. . To make the model the main subject in the photo they have been placed in the centre so the audience automatically look at them straight away at not what is happening in the back ground. As the photo is in black and white it gives grunge or edgy vibe to match the clothes and make up the models are wearing. Also, to add to the edgy vibe the clothing in the background are similar to the ones the models are wearing. To make sure the models stand out clearer in black and white Testino has used studio lighting on them both so once the effect is on they come out a lot brighter and whiter against the background. Doing this makes it more clear to see both the subjects expression, which is moody adds to the grunge aesthetic. Quick snap will be used as when the models are walking fast shutter speed will mean that you don’t get the blurriness of them walking forward. As this photo would be used for a magazine you want the audience to feel the characterises from the models so taking the shot mid action conveys this more. As the models are already mid walk it shows they have attitude and are fierce as it looks as if they’re rebelling against the crew as they aren’t just standing still and it conveys they’re doing their own thing. In addition, to show they have attitude the camera is slightly further down so the models look as if they’re going over to approach the camera as they’re slightly looking down.

This picture is of Prince William and Kate we know this because the picture is close up so we can clearly see their faces. The subjects faces are the centre point of the picture making the audience automatically attracted to the subjects. Another way the subjects have bee made clearer is because they’re the only focus. This is called a shallow shot as the background is all blurry. As this photo is close up it clearly shows the couple are happy together. Another way Testino has conveyed happiness I the picture is by the natural lighting used. As the natural light is behind them it creates a glowing effect around the couple which makes us as a audience know that the couple are happy together. He has kept them close together with Kates hand on Williams chest this is because it proves she is looked after by him ad shows the just how much she adores him. Williams arms are wrapped around Kate to prove he is more powerful than her as he is the man in the relationship as stereotypically males are meant to provide for the females and take care of them. However, because of the lighting and expressions on the subjects faces proves it isn’t in a possessive way and is simply because they’re in love with each other as he wants to make her happy. To this day we know the couple are still very happy with each other as they now have two children and are still happily married.
