Transcript of Photo technical - how did they do it
How did they do it?•What technical choices did these photographers make?
Exposure Variables Possible Settings When do I use it?
Shutter Speed(measured as a fraction of a second)
1/8000 = fast = opens and closes quickly
•Bright situations•Reduce blur•Freeze action
2 seconds = slow = long exposure
•Dark situations•Creates blur (from subject movement and camera movement)
Aperture(measured as a fraction)
f/2.8 = open •Dark situation•Shallow depth of field
f/22 = closed •Bright situation•Deep depth of field
Film Speed(measured in ISO in the hundreds)
100 ISO = insensitive to light (tans slowly)
•Bright situations•Creates superb image quality
3200 ISO = sensitive to light (burns quickly)
•Dark situations•Image quality suffers
Lenses(measured in focal length as millimeters)
20 mm = wide angle •Wide angle of view•Distorted perspective•Used in tight situations
300 mm = telephoto •Narrow angle of view•Compressed perspective•Used when far from subject

Homework for Tomorrow:1. Find 3 photojournalism photographs (from a
website, a magazine, a newspaper). Explain what you think were key technical decisions in creating those photographs. What do you think were the shutter speeds, apertures, lenses and film speeds used?
2. Find a photojournalism photograph that is a bit more technically challenging than you think you can explain. We will talk about some of these photographs and I will do my best to explain how the photographer created them.
