Project title: Flow

For my project of creating my own magazine I will be taking and using my own photos for all the images seen in my magazine. The model on the front cover will be a fellow classmate, Shaune Hazlehurst, and he will be depicted in a close-up shot similar to the image of Kendrick Lamar from my magazine of inspiration, XXL. Shaune will be wearing a cap and gold chains with fake tattoos on his neck as he is not legally allowed tattoos, as he is under 18. He is 16 years old, which is the starting age of my target audience so therefore he will appeal to my target audience and the fashion he is wearing is stereotypically associated with Hip Hop (gold chain, tattoos etc) which will also appeal to my target audience. The magazine that I will mainly be competing with is XXL which is priced at £4.50 every two months. On the contrary, my magazine will be priced at £4 and will be released every month making it cheaper than XXL and more frequent so more copies should be sold.

Photographer:

The photographer for all photos featured in my magazine will be myself and for the cover I will be photographing my model at a close-up shot and a straight on angle so that the model is facing directly into the camera. This will imply that the model is actually in front of the customer and is ‘in their face’ which should encourage them to pick up the magazine and buy it. For my cover shot I will be using high key lighting to enhance the face of the model, preventing dark and blurred shots. The post production effects I intend to apply are a purple and green effect in the background as seen on the cover of my music magazine.

My project is creating a magazine cover, contents page and DPS under the name ‘Flow’. The connotations behind this name are that the Hip Hop genre is known for its flowing beats. In addition to this the font that I have chosen for my masthead has a flow to it as the letters curve in a flowing pattern, which matches the name. The adjective ‘flow’ is described as “moving along” and by reading my magazine the reader will be moving along with the latest Hip Hop articles whilst keeping up to date with fashion.

Moreover the other images are inspiration for my Double Page Spread as they are shots from another magazine article and they offer a range of shot types which offer a different perspective for the reader and make the articles more interesting.

Casting:

Model requirements:Reasons behind WHY these people are suitable – Who do they look like?This person is suitable for the images for my magazine as they are similar to my front cover of inspiration. This being an African American appearance which is the same as Kendrick Lamar who has a dark skin tone and is African American. Furthermore the African American appearance is stereotypical to the ethnicity of many Hip Hop stars and generally many readers as well. Furthermore, Shaune (my model) has a very fashionable appearance and suits many types of clothing, in particular Hip Hop fashion which is why I chose him to be on the cover on my magazine. In addition to this Shaune has a very photogenic appearance which will ensure that my magazine will look better and sell more copies.

Shaune Hazlehurst is the model, pictured above, who I will use to replicate my magazine of inspiration which has Kendrick Lamar in it. Shaune is 6 foot tall which will connote an imposing frame as his broad figure will look straight down the camera encouraging the customer to pick up my magazine. Shaune is significantly taller than Kendrick Lamar who is on my magazine of inspiration, however the magazine cover only is an extreme close-up so therefore the height difference is not an issue because the rest of their features are similar such as skin colour and facial details such as the mouth so therefore Shaune is the ideal candidate to use for my magazine as he is the most similar in appearance to Kendrick Lamar.

Hair and Make up:

My model will be wearing a cap so not much care needs to be taken into the appearance of his hair because it will not be visible and moreover makeup will not be used for my magazine shoot so this is also not applicable.

Where:The shoot will take place at school in a free period on a white background because a white background gives me the easiest possible job of editing on my colours of inspiration such as the pink and green from the front cover either side of Kendrick Lamar. Instead it will be Shaune on the cover next to pink and green colours that have been edited from the white background of the photo I will take. My other photos for the contents page and DPS will also be taken at school on a white background because for the contents page I will be editing on a different background and the same applies for the DPS.

Nike cap will be used on the front of my magazine cover for advertisement purposes. Additionally many gangster rappers are pictured wearing caps these days so it fits in with the rap gang culture of Hip Hop. This is proven on the front cover of inspiration as Kendrick Lamar is wearing a cap. The cap can also be used to represent an urban lifestyle that most people who listen and produce Hip Hop are part of, therefore the front cover will appeal to them and they will be likely to buy the magazine.

Many rappers/Hip Hop artists are seen wearing a lot of gold jewelry. Therefore to emulate their success the model on the front of my magazine will also be wearing jewelry to attract more buyers to the magazine who follow the artists who are pictured wearing a lot of jewelry.

Unit G321 – Foundation Portfolio in Media – Photo-shoot Plan20th October 2016 is the date for the photo shoot because this is when myself and Shaune have decided to bring in the relevant props. Moreover the photo shoot will take place during my free period at around 12 because this gives me the best opportunity for high key lightning which the images for me magazine require.
