Ahoy NLSC Sailors!
Happy New Year to everyone. I hope 2017 bring you peace, happiness, and lots of time in a sailboat!
Along with welcoming the New Year, I take great pleasure in piping aboard four new members for 2017. Please
join me in welcoming Andrew Nystedt, Karen Tangen, and Amanda & Beau Bureau. We look forward to
getting to know you at our on-the -water and off-water sailing and social events.
Recently, Debra and I began to plan a multi-week sailing trip. As I forged ahead in the planning process, I
became aware of some key elements that affect every trip, and I thought I would pass them on for your
consideration. I found it interesting that each of the elements may impact the others, and most trips will require
a compromise among them.
Perhaps, for the majority of us who are still working as a means to pay for our sailing habit or have obligations
requiring our presence, time is the most rigid variable. A day off may dictate that we only look at local sailing
opportunities like Minnetonka or Lake Pepin. A long weekend may allow us to venture further out to Lake
Superior or one of the Midwest’s pristine lakes within a moderate distance from our home. Perhaps a week will
allow us an opportunity to ply the waters of one of the coasts or venture farther south into the Caribbean.
Finally, for those fortunate enough to squirrel together a couple of weeks or more, the whole world opens up to
us.
Next on the list may be where to go. What is on your bucket list? Can you combine a sailing adventure with
other land-side activities? Are there destinations you think and dream about? It never ceases to amaze me how
many places you can find a reputable charter company that will help you plan an itinerary to your liking.
The type of boat is very important to a charterer and may impact where you go. Monohulls and catamarans have
very distinct advantages and disadvantages which must be taken into account. Though a catamaran has a faster
theoretical hull speed to length and able to slip into shallower anchorages, a monohull may be better for ease of
handling and the ability to point upwind more efficiently. A significant factor in choosing a particular sailboat
may be the number of accompanying crew members. Typically, a catamaran can handle a larger population than
a monohull that has a comparable length.
For many of us, skill or knowledge level may be a limiting factor when choosing a charter boat or geographic
area. Though the physics of sailing are transferable from one boat to another, the level of complexity including
electrical systems, water systems, generators as well as the nuances of a foreign port may exceed one’s specific
skill or knowledge set; however, there are ways to compensate for lack of skill or knowledge. Charter Captains
can be hired for all or part of a voyage. Perhaps a day under a Charter Captain’s tutelage will be enough for you
to get acquainted with the vessel and able to take command…. Or, for a worry-free experience, you may hire a
skipper for the entire trip. In addition to assistance with sailing, a local Captain is usually an excellent resource
to tap into for information on that perfect restaurant or sight-seeing excursion.
JANUARY 2017 VOLUME 24 ISSUE 1
NORTHERN LIGHTS SAILING CLUB WWW.NLSC.ORG Page 3
Finally, and for most of us, budget will likely will be a factor to be taken into account. I have found that most of
my charter experiences have been a compromise between what I want to do and what I can afford. One way to
mitigate the effects of a limited budget is to co-op the trip by planning it with a few friends or plan it as an
NLSC Sponsored sailing trip. Did you know that NLSC will cover for the charter deposit/deductible on a club
Sponsored trip? This alone may save a crew a significant portion of the up-front package cost. The club also has
a significant number of experienced members who may be able to save you money by tapping into their
previous experience on a similar charter.
So…. What are you waiting for? Where would you like to go in 2017?
Fair Winds and Gentle Seas,
Scott

messing about in boats.” ― Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows

Experts estimate that there are over 8,000 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. Of that total, Lake Superior only
holds around 350 of these historic treasures, but because of her cold clear deep waters and lack of Zebra
mussels, they are some of the best wrecks in the Great Lakes.
Ken has been diving Lake Superior for over 40 years. Through his
amazing video, Ken will take you on a tour of these underwater
museums as he presents "Lake Superior's Best Wrecks."

Over 50 NLSC members spent a very fun evening at
the Annual Holiday Party at Embassy Suites in
Bloomington. While the snow was falling outside, we
kept warm and dry inside with delicious food, a
beautifully decorated ballroom, great music provided
by our DJs Jason and Jennifer, all kinds of dancing,
and lots of conversation. The desserts were worth any
weight gain they may have generated. Marilynn Kaplan led the group in several
line dances and a few square dances, giving everyone the opportunity to get up and boogie. The eight who
stayed for the night at the Embassy were treated to a large complimentary breakfast as well as live guitar music
and the opportunity to meet with Santa on Saturday morning.
This year, the NLSC board decided to combine the Annual
Member Appreciation Night with the Holiday Party. Our
member appreciation this year honored the 45 members
who, over the last 25 years, have planned, chaired, and co-
chaired sailing trips all over the world. Of the 45, fifteen
were in attendance, were recognized for their contributions
to NLSC, and received festive tokens of appreciation.
Following are the sailors that have stepped up and lead us to
places we could only dream about without their leadership:
Jay Biggs, Dale Broom, Lisa Broom, Marge Collins, Tom Cronmiller, Kevin Crothers, Lou Culbert, Tom
Embertson, Jacque Engelmayer, Steve Engelmayer, Herb Frederick, Arlene Frie, Joan Gilmore, Norena Hale,
Paul Hinck, Wayne Hokemeir, Keith Holloman, Lee Hopkinson, Tyler Howell, Marilynn Kaplan, Steve
Loscheider, Don McGrath, Don Moran, Tom Nelson, Judy Nelson, Judith Pahlow, Monica Pelzer, Gordy
Rosie, Robert Rouda, Alice Ruminsky, Michael Sawinski, John Schlagel, David Shores, Jerry Sicard, Leota
Spalla, Vicki Staudte, Jeffrey Tam, Julie Thorndycraft, Jean VanTatenhove, Kris
VanTatenhove, Myra Woods, Scott Woolfrey, Debra Woolfrey, Kim Wright, Dorothy
Zimmermann.
Several prizes were awarded from drawings during the evening: Lisa Broom won the
grand prize, a $100.00 gift card from West Marine; Jake Smith won an inflatable life
vest from West Marine for donating to the silent auction; and Gary Hasert won a
$25.00 gift certificate from Hooper’s Yachts for donating to the food shelf.
Additionally, one person at each table won the poinsettia table centerpiece.
The silent auction had a very diverse collection of items for everyone to purchase. In all, approximately $1090
will be donated to the St. Croix Sailing School scholarship fund to help kids start their sailing adventures.

Karen Tangen joined NLSC in December, 2016. She was introduced to the Club by
friend, Tris Tupa. “We were at a church event, and we started talking about our
love of sailing.” She reports that she had a great time at the Holiday Party meeting
and talking with members (and doing a little square dancing).
Karen used to own and sailed a 30 ft. Columbia on Lake Michigan (Chicago),
sailed her old wooded X-Boat on Harriet, and has now really downsized... to a
sailfish-type boat on Burntside Lake. “Actually, I've gotten rid of all of my
motorized boats except for a little 4 hp my son puts on the back of one of our
canoes. I also received 2 kayaks for Christmas...yippee!”
Karen says she’s up for sailing anywhere. She also loves to swim (in lakes all summer and LA fitness in
winter), hike, read, explore, go to plays, and sporting events. “I like just about anything.”
Karen has three grown kids (all
adopted) who have been traveling with
her throughout India, China, Europe,
Africa, etc. and the major National
Parks, since they were very young. “I
brought them with me on University
trips as a professor, on mission trips,
educational trips, etc. Now they are 30,
31 and 20, and we still try to find at
least one trip to go on together each
year.” Karen’s husband has disabilities that prevent him from traveling. The attached pictures are of Karen
and her kids this summer. They were on a road/sailing trip for a month in New Zealand and North
Australia.

NLSC Meeting and Gutter Regatta
February 21, 2017
The time is now...
...to get ready for the NLSC Gutter Regatta!!!
At our February meeting, we will again have our fun and exciting competition. The night will have thrills,
agony, and laughs!
New this year, we will offer two classes - the traditional monohull class and the new trimaran class. No matter
which class you choose, the idea is to reach the finish line of the side by side gutters before your heat
competitor. You provide the "wind" by blowing through a straw, but don't blow too hard or you will capsize
your boat. The winner moves on to the next round. Check out YouTube for more on how it works and tips on
how to be your best.
We will offer both trimarans and monohulls for a $3 charter fee; however, the real competitors will buy the kit
and then design and tune their boats for optimal performance. Just be certain to follow the Boy Scout rules.
To purchase a boat, either go to your local Boy Scout Store (locations throughout the Twin Cities) or order
from ScoutStuff.org.
In addition to our class winners, we will have a competition for the best dressed boat. So, if you're more
creative than speed oriented, we'll have a competition for you.
Now is the time! Choose your style, get your boat, and get ready!

MEMBERSHIP NEWS …Your 2016 membership expired on Dec. 31st!
Thanks to those of you who have already renewed your membership for 2017! You are appreciated!
For those who are planning to renew, why not do it after you finish reading this fine edition of the
Bearings?
Remember: All members (except those who joined after September 1st, 2016) need to renew their membership
which expired December 31st . As communicated in the October Bearings, we have eliminated the “dual”
option and instead will just have an individual membership for $25. All members need to fill out a two-page
individual application which includes our new Mutual Release disclaimer. On-line renewal is not available at
this time. Forms are available as follows:
1. Print out an application on pages 12&13 of this Bearings newsletter.
2. On our web site. Type in nlsc.org (no log in necessary unless you want to go to other areas than
membership). Click on NLSC Membership in the left sidebar. This will pull up the membership
application which includes the new Mutual Release disclaimer so you can print it out.
Fill out the complete two-page application with disclaimer. If your personal information has not changed,
you may skip that part of the application; just fill in your name at the top. The Mutual Release disclaimer
part of the application must be filled in, signed and dated. The renewal process will be held up if we do not
receive the complete application. Send the completed two-page form, along with your check, to the address on
the application.
Confirmation of Your Renewal: You will receive a renewal confirmation via email from the NLSC
Membership Committee when your renewal has been processed.

I KNOWINGLY ACCEPT THESE RISKS AND FURTHER AGREE AS FOLLOWS:
I, ________________________, hereby enter into this Mutual Release of Liability and Indemnification (hereinafter “Mutual

Upcoming Minnetonka Power Squadron Educational Opportunities
Submitted by Al Kracke, member of NLSC & Minnetonka PS
Maybe there are things you think you’ll never do like make a border crossing to Canada with your boat, but
you’re curious about. You know you should have a “man overboard” plan, but you’re not sure where to start.
So why not attend a seminar or take a class this winter to improve your knowledge. And if you are not going
south this winter, or the Boat Show, this is a good way to get your boating fix during the winter snow.
Education is the cornerstone of the United States Power Squadron, and the local Minnetonka Power Squadron
has some great Education Opportunities coming up that complement the sailing focused classes offered by
organizations like The American Sailing Association.
Upcoming Power Squadron 2 hour seminars
No need to take a test. Just sit back, learn, and enjoy.
- Fee for seminars, non-members: $24/per person/per seminar, $26 with a credit card.
- Location for all seminars: Peace Church, 7624 Cedar Lake Rd, St Louis Park, 55426
- Please pre-register: www.minnetonkaps.org

Boat Handling Under Power
Tuesday January 10 7:00-9:00 pm
This seminar shows boaters how to depart and dock under a variety of conditions as well as all about trimming
the boat underway. We’ll discuss close quarters maneuvering, turning, steering in reverse, differences in
maneuvering with single and twin engines, and more.
Basic Weather Forecasting
Tuesday January 17, 7:00-9:00 pm
The safety and comfort of those who venture out on-the-water have always been weather dependent. This
seminar is a must for boaters who have never taken a weather course. Topics include Air Masses and Fronts,
Winds, Storms, Clouds and Thunderstorms, Fog, and Forecasting.
Border Crossing
Thursday February 9, 7:00-9:00 pm
There is some great boating so close to us in Canada. If you’ve considered exploring the Great Lakes by boat,
you may find your best launch is from a Canadian marina. So what do you have to know to take your boat
across the border? What should you expect the crossing agent to ask you? We’ll also discuss the programs and
documentation you’ll need to ease your crossing into Canadian, Mexican, or Bahamian waters.
*This seminar will be held as an online webinar, NOT at the church. You will be contacted with login
information prior to the seminar. You will attend via your computer.
Using GPS
Tuesday April 25, 7:00-9:00 pm
Learn how GPS on the water is different than the GPS in your car, and how to relate the GPS to your charts
which provide essential information about what is around you. We’ll teach you how to store waypoints, and
share tips on what to look for in a new GPS if you don’t have one, or if it’s time to upgrade (and when is it not a
good time to get new electronics?!)
Sail Trim
Tuesday May 9, 7:00-9:00 pm
Consider attending this 2-hour seminar if you:
1) Haven’t sailed recently and are feeling rusty about sail adjustment,
2) Are worried about looking like a novice on a friend’s sailboat this summer if they ask you to crew, or
3) Feel comfortable with sails in perfect conditions, but would like more information about non-optimal
conditions.
Man Overboard
Tuesday May 30, 7:00-9:00 pm
This seminar is designed to teach boaters how to react, and then, how to recover a crewmember or passenger
who accidentally falls overboard. The seminar covers vessel set-up and man overboard (MOB) equipment as
well as maneuvering to keep the rescuer close to the person in the water. It also covers the responsibility of the
person in the water.

diagnose problems that might be beyond your ability to fix, and how to share information with your mechanic
so the right repairs get performed. Gasoline inboards, outboards, and diesel engines are taught in a way that
reinforces the common aspects of how engines work.
Seamanship
