Respect Life Prayer

Dear God,

We see life cheapened every day

through abortion and other forms of abuse,

through terrorism, and other acts of violence,

and through neglect of children, the poor, and the elderly.

In a world of plenty, we can forget

that there is nothing more precious than human life.

Give us the grace to see how we can make a difference,

and encourage change in our culture.

When we are discouraged,

remind us of the Catholic monk Telemachus

who stopped the gladiator games with an act of charity.

Inspire us with the stories of Mary

and other mothers of unexpected pregnancies,

who knew that every child is a gift of God's grace

and is wanted by you in this world.

Encourage conviction in the hearts of those

who do not yet know or understand

that a desire for choice is no reason to end any life

and that you desire that all life

come only to a natural end in you.

Amen.

STEWARDSHIP / CORRESPONSABILIDAD

Gratitude in Action: Our Way of Life / Gratitud en Acción: Nuestra forma de Vida

“Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to

serve ...” (Mathew 20:28)

When we receive a service, often we feel immediately

obligated to offer something of a monetary nature in return

for that which we have received. We enjoy dinner in a nice

restaurant. The person who assisted us during the meal

was pleasant and attentive, so we wish to compensate

those qualities with a tip, saying “thank you”.

When we are traveling, we may find ourselves in need of a

transportation service rather than renting a car. The driver

may have been very courteous and exercised great care in

getting us to our destination. Again, we say “thank you”

by means of money.

However, those of us who offer our time teaching religious

education and formation, visiting the homebound, sick or

imprisoned, serving the needs of our neighbors through

the thrift store or Our Mother’s Food Pantry, expect

nothing in return. We hope in some small way we have

accepted the Father’s will designed for us and glorified

Him by our willingness to serve without counting the cost

of our time given and our gifts shared.

Sometimes, the manner in which we can serve others is

through our time spent in prayer. We can also support the

monetary needs of our parish, our diocese and our

universal church through donations of money for the many

ongoing programs and financial needs.

Jesus also gave Himself willingly through the ultimate

sacrifice of His own life. In obedience to His Father’s will,

He laid down His own life for you and me. How does one

possibly say “thank you” for such a supreme and selfless

offering? Words cannot possibly express the gratitude we

should feel for what He suffered.

Our adoration and worship given in return affords us a

path by which we can reach out with hope to God our

Father, while embracing Jesus as our Savior, our

Salvation, and through the love of the Holy Spirit,

bringing ourselves to a way of giving through gratitude

and thanksgiving.

nada a cambio.

nuestra parroquia, nuestra diócesis y nuestra iglesia

Progress on the Kuzy Hall renovation

project: We’re picking up steam after a

slow start. We were able to make only

limited progress with this phase of the parish

strategic plan because it took a long time to

find a qualified architect. Washington

County was just too busy with other projects. Finally

CRSA Architects found an opening and the drawings

began. Toward the end of August we were able to secure

the services of Grass Creek Construction to oversee the

demolition and construction work. We then began the

process of cleaning out Kuzy Hall.

The Diocesan Finance Commission had to approve a loan

for the work on our hall and we had to wait for their next

meeting which was on September 20. By the time this

article appears in the bulletin work should be underway.

The need for a loan in this part of the strategic plan is a

bit different from the earlier parts, which included rectory

and parking lot work. We were able to pay for these

earlier parts as we went, but the hall involves more

subcontractors and more new items. Modernizing the

elevator in Kuzy, for example, cost $83,303.

The overall budget for the renovation is $945,802. This

includes the demolition and construction charges,

building permits, a new sound system, lighter chairs, new

kitchen equipment, etc. We need $366,875 from the

Diocese, but we have $466,875 earmarked. This means if

there is some sort of unforeseen problem we will have a

cushion of $100,000 in addition to a contingency fund

priced into the $945,802 overall budget. The Diocese will

hold this cushion amount without charge and if we don’t

use it, we don’t pay interest on it. It simply stays with the

Diocese. In fact, if we don’t use any portion of the other

$366,875 we won’t pay principle, interest or other fees on

it. So the bigger our monthly collections for the

renovation fund are, the less we’ll end up paying.

We’ve learned from past problems encountered during the

renovation of the church. We now have two construction-

savvy parishioners, Mr. Jerry Trojan and Deacon Carlos

Mendez, overseeing the day-to-day progress on the

renovation. This will help eliminate mistakes and delays

that will cost money. Renovating Kuzy Hall has been a

long time coming. Thanks for your patience and your

support. A particular thanks to those who usually use the

hall but have found other locations to meet. We’re all in

this together.

menos pagaremos.

Hemos aprendido de los problemas pasados

encontrados durante la renovación de la iglesia. Ahora

dinero.

quienes aún no conocen o entienden
