On Oct. 17, a full year of anniversary celebrations culmi- nates in a swanky soiree showcasing the past, present and future of the popular attraction housed in Vancou- ver’s most recognizable building. The evening features culinary creations, fine wines and cool cocktails under the geodesic dome, along with music, memories and more. Here’s to the next quarter-century. Stickboy What happens when the bullied becomes the bully? Canada’s best-known spo- ken-word artist, BC’s own Shane Koyczan (pictured), explored this idea in his novel-in-verse Stickboy . Koyczan and composer Neil Weisensel have now adapted the much-lauded book into a visually inno- vative and musically mem- orable opera. Catch the world premiere Oct. 23 to Nov. 7 at the Vancouver Playhouse. See page 52. ’80S FOREVER Back in 1983, the influence of Flashdance was inescapable. The hit movie produced a flood of top-10 songs—“Maniac,” “Gloria,” “Manhunt,” “I Love Rock ’N’ Roll,” plus that oh-so-catchy title track—and countless fashion trends. Now it’s time to brush off those old legwarmers and off-the-shoulder grey sweatshirt and head to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre for the stage adaptation, Flashdance – The Musical (Nov. 11 to 16; page 52). What a feeling!
