Phosgene Global Market Report
Released By The Business Research Company
This phosgene global market report covers the global production and market volume for phosgene.
Phosgene is a toxic gas used in the production of various derivatives that are further used in the
production of chemicals for a range of industries.
Phosgene, also known as carbonyl dichloride, is a very toxic chemical used in many industries for
chemical synthetic processes. It is used in the production of products such as pesticides, dyes,
isocyanates, chloroformates and polyurethanes. At room temperature, it is a very poisonous gas. It is
heavier than air, hence stays near the ground and spreads rapidly.
Phosgene is synthesized from carbon monoxide and chlorine. These two are themselves toxic and
hazardous chemicals.
The reaction of anhydrous chlorine with pure carbon monoxide in the presence of an activated
carbon catalyst at high temperature produces phosgene. Apart from phosgene, this reaction gives
some unwanted by-products and considerable heat is generated. The production of phosgene is a
continuous process with careful metering of raw materials and excess heat removal. The principle
by-product of phosgene production is another chlorinated hydrocarbon such as carbon
tetrachloride.
Phosgene is a white or pale yellow gas at room temperature. The odor is that of newly mown hay or
corn. Phosgene is a non-flammable gas and is four times denser than air.

The boiling point of the gas is 8.2°C. This makes phosgene an enormously volatile and non-persistent
chemical agent.
Phosgene was used widely as a chemical weapon, particularly in World War I. It is now used in the
production of various derivatives such as isocyanates, chloroformates and carboxy anhydrides.
These derivatives are further used in the manufacturing of various products such as plastics, polyurethanes, dyes, pharmaceutical agents and pesticides. They are also used in the uranium
enrichment process and in the bleaching of sand during glass manufacture.
Chemicals manufacturers have a preference for chemicals with low toxicity, such as triphosgene; this
poses a risk to the phosgene production market. Western Europe and North America have been the
largest producers of phosgene. However, industry experts believe that the production is shifting
towards Asian countries such as China. This is due to strict regulations on the production and use of
toxic chemicals in the developed regions.
Phosgene, Market Size
Global phosgene production is captive. It is produced at the same plant where it is further used for
the preparation of derivatives. Hence, there are no clearly available figures about global phosgene
production.
North America and Western Europe were the largest producers of phosgene until the early 2000s.
However, strict regulations and increased awareness about the toxicity of such chemicals resulted in
phosgene production shifting towards Asian countries, especially China. Currently, China is the
leading country in the production of phosgene and its derivatives.
Global phosgene market volume grew slowly during 2010-2015. It is expected to grow at a similar
rate going forward. The developed regions such as North America and Western Europe will see a
decline in their growth rate. However, it is expected to be adjusted by an increase in Asian countries.
The sections below give the global market size volume for phosgene including historic estimates and
forecasts.
Phosgene, Value Chain
Phosgene is used in the manufacture of various derivatives such as isocyanates and chloroformates.
These derivatives are further used in the production of many pharmaceuticals and other organic
compounds.
Due to its toxicity and risks in storage and transport, phosgene is produced on-site in the same plant
where it is used in the synthesis of derivatives. Some of the common derivatives of phosgene are
isocyanates, chloroformates, carbamoyl chlorides and carboxy anhydrides. Various production
capabilities include laboratory/kilo-lab, pilot plant or full-scale production. Laboratory/kilo-lab
production is used to manufacture a very small amount of the chemical for research purposes.

Global Phosgene Market Volume, Split By Industrial Application, 2015
A majority of the phosgene produced around the world is used in the production of isocyanates.
According to the latest data available from the American Chemistry Council (ACC), around XX% of
phosgene goes into the production of isocyanates and another XX% is used for the production of
polycarbonates. Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) constitute
more than XX% of total isocyanates produced using phosgene. Both TDI and MDI are predominantly
used in polyurethane production.
