by-product of phosgene production is another chlorinated hydrocarbon such as carbon

tetrachloride.

Phosgene is a white or pale yellow gas at room temperature. The odor is that of newly mown hay or

corn. Phosgene is a non-flammable gas and is four times denser than air.



The boiling point of the gas is 8.2°C. This makes phosgene an enormously volatile and non-persistent

chemical agent.

Phosgene was used widely as a chemical weapon, particularly in World War I. It is now used in the

production of various derivatives such as isocyanates, chloroformates and carboxy anhydrides.

These derivatives are further used in the manufacturing of various products such as plastics,polyurethanes, dyes, pharmaceutical agents and pesticides. They are also used in the uranium

enrichment process and in the bleaching of sand during glass manufacture.

Chemicals manufacturers have a preference for chemicals with low toxicity, such as triphosgene; this

poses a risk to the phosgene production market. Western Europe and North America have been the

largest producers of phosgene. However, industry experts believe that the production is shifting

towards Asian countries such as China. This is due to strict regulations on the production and use of

toxic chemicals in the developed regions.

Global phosgene production is captive. It is produced at the same plant where it is further used for

the preparation of derivatives. Hence, there are no clearly available figures about global phosgene

more than XX% of total isocyanates produced using phosgene. Both TDI and MDI are predominantly

used in polyurethane production.
