Following up on complaints from local people, the Department of Conservation is looking into a vehicle track to the beach formed across Conservation Land at Uretiti leading from the property of Paul Glamuzina. Mr. Glamuzina, who owns an earthmoving company in Kumeu in west Auckland, purchased 2.35 hectares of land at Uretiti from the Presbyterian Church in May 2013. Harvey Linton donated the land to the church in 1953 for use as a youth Bible camp.The vehicle accessway runs from Mr. Glamuzina’s property along the Tahuna Walkway and down on to the beach. The walking trail has been widened by a tractor and, as the trail crosses a particularly steep foredune (inaccessible to vehicles) before descending to the beach, a tractor - wide rampway has been formed in the dunes alongside, sloping northwards and cutting across the bottom of the walking trail. Senior Biodiversity Ranger for DOC Nigel Miller said, while negotiations with Mr. Glamuzina are in progress,

It’s been a busy summer and the sand dunes of Bream Bay have been getting a battering. Walk along the beach in front of the Department of Conservation’s Uretiti campground and there are numerous trails over and through the dunes, some of them only several metres apart.

I am writing as a responsible dog owner to those who ob-viously are not. While walking your dogs in Waihoihoi Park in the centre of Waipu please take some plastic bags with you (we all have them, bread bags, grocery bags etc) and pick up what your dog leaves behind. You all know who you are and I know who you are also and it would be greatly appreciated by all those who use the park if you started cleaning up after you dogs. I take my lab for a walk twice to three times a day down at the park and without fail there is fresh dog waste on the grass, and I don’t take kindly to having to explain to visitors with kids that it isn’t my dogs waste that their

The statement below was agreed on for publication in the Bream Bay News by members of the Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust :“The Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust thinks it is outrageous that Mr. Glamuzina should have formed a vehicle access for himself over public Conservation Land. The Tahuna Walkway is for walkers only. It was never intended as a vehicle access. The vehicle track over the foredunes is of particular concern as this is likely to result in a big sand blowout. The fact there are many other abuses of the dune system along the length of Bream Bay does not give Mr. Glamuzina a right to cause further damage.”Phoned at his west Auckland home and invited to comment for this article Mr. Glamuzina said, “ There are too many do - gooders at that place. They think they own the place. There have been all sorts of bullshit things said but when I front up and threaten to take people to court they all duck for cover.”Mr. Glamuzina said he had legal access across the Department of Conservation land to the beach. The issue at stake is whether or not this easement allows for vehicle access in the dunes.

As he does not have an email address, The Bream Bay News editor took a copy of this article to Mr. Glamuzina at his Uretiti property to read prior to publication. He again threatened legal action, this time against the Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust and ordered the editor, who he had invited to meet him there, off his land. He said, “You are just jealous because you do not have an easement to the beach.”To the reply that every member of the public enjoyed the same right to walk over Conservation Land, Mr. Glamuzina replied that they did not, however, have an easement to their own property. He demanded that the Bream Bay Coastal Care Trustees meet him that afternoon at Uretiti and once again threatened legal action.He said he had been thanked for widening the Tahuna Trail by a local woman who regularly walked there with her dog. “Now she doesn’t get her face scratched by the gorse.”

Another hole in the road at Marsden City development

There is another big hole in one of the sealed roads in the Marsden City development.Casey Road, the main road into the subdivision, has been cordoned off with roadblocks

The Waipu Cove Surf Lifesaving Club’s men’s and women’s under 19 canoe teams had some expert coaching recently.Kayla Imrie and Caitlyn Ryan, who have both represented New Zealand in the sport of Canoe Sprint - the event in which Lisa Carrington won a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games - put in a day with the teams in the surf at Waipu Cove on 18th

This was a return visit for the girls. In December they ran an introduction to surf sports camp for those interested in taking up the sport.Both are aged 21 and they have each won many medals for their clubs (Caitlyn – Red Beach and Kayla – Wellington) at national surf life saving championships. The Waipu U19 Men’s canoe team is planning to enter the Surf Life Saving Northern Region Life Saving Championships to be held in Ruakaka in February. Then they intend to compete at the National Championships to be held at Ohope Beach in March.

Children and staff of the Small Poppies childcare centre in Ruakaka got a nasty surprise when they arrived for work and play on the morning of Thursday 16 November. They found their playground had been used as the venue for a drunken party. “There were cigarette butts all over the children’s picnic table and vomit was all over the place” said the centre’s manager Pat Parkinson. “We had to clean it all up and disinfect everything before we could let the children go out to play. It is disgraceful that anyone could do something like this to a children’s play area.”The children had to stay inside all morning while the mess was cleaned up. A security light is kept on all night at the front of the building and Pat is wondering if anyone saw anything suspicious in the area. The Small Poppies Centre is at number 17 Marsden Point Rd., near the intersection with State Highway One. The intruders would have had to climb over the fence from Marsden Point Road to access the playground. The new Ruakaka South wastewater reticulation system has performed well over the busy summer holiday period. Andrew Carvell said when he came back to work from his

received reporting problems with the new system. “I could hardly believe it when I was told there had only been one.”Approximately 400 houses along Marsden Point Road and at Ruakaka Beach have each had a small pump unit installed to pump household wastewater into a newly constructed sewer line. The problem, which resulted in the solitary call, was caused

Treated wastewater is now being applied as irrigation on to Council owned land at Rama Rd., in Marsden Point. The land is leased to a beef farmer who lets the land rest for a set number of days before grazing his cattle there.

However, no sooner had the boat driven by Steve O’Brien MYBC Club Commodore with Hazel Harnell in tow, got out from the shore than the wind picked up and Hazel had a bumpy ride twice tipping out into the sea. Steve said Hazel and her friends had helped all morning with the cream teas and kids scavenger hunt and “we spent about an hour giving them some fun and bringing smiles to their faces.”

Five leaders and 16 scouts from the Solomon Islands

Scout den below Mangere Mountain. Meeting them on the 27th I suggested they would like to take a walk up the mountain, which is the remains of an old volcano for views over Auckland. They had seen the stock fence around the hill and thought it was private property so they wouldn't be allowed up it. In the Solomons there are no fences outside of the towns and where there are fences it is private property. Walking around and over the Volcano we saw a few rabbits, which was a new ex-perience for them as there are no rabbits on the Solo-mons. It was soon established that rabbits are faster then pursuing Solomon Island scouts.

course, some of our members have been researching for many years and have the experience and knowl-edge to help newcomers. We can help you get start-ed, or – if you have come across that ‘brick wall’ – where to go from there. Family research is about communicating with others of like interests.
