BASKETBALL DAYS
All of the Grade 3’s and 4’s hopped on a bus last week the
Southern Basketball Stadium in Cheltenham to play
basketball all day, in the McDonalds Hoop Time 3/4
competition! A great day was had by all, there were some
outstanding results amongst the Rookies teams, and our 2
Future Stars teams represented Parktone beautifully, with 1
narrowly missing out on the play-offs! A special thank-you
to the parents who came with us, Sam Jones, Lisa
Morrison, Justine Clarke and Shane Wallis.
The 5/6’s had their District basketball day at Parkdale
Secondary College last week also. We could take 1 boys
and 1 girls team only, so we held tryouts during PE classes,
the 8 spots for each team were hotly contested, so we
continued tryouts for 3 weeks before finally choosing the
teams. There were quite a few who narrowly missed out,
credit to all of the students though, as good sportsmanship
was shown across the board both by the students who
made the teams and also by the ones who did not. The
boys team won 3 games on the day and just missed on
winning a 4th which would have seen them make the play-
offs. The girls team (only 4 of which have ever played
basketball) competed well and almost drew one of their
games. Both of our teams displayed excellent
sportsmanship in both victory and defeat and I was
extremely proud of both their effort and behaviour on the
day
Again, if your child would like to join basketball there are a
few options. For the 5 – 8 year olds, their best bet is to do at
least 1 term of the ‘Intro to basketball’ sessions, there is a
new Saturday morning format beginning on Saturday 14th
September at Parkdale SC, There is also a Tuesday
afternoon session called ‘Dribblers’. If you child is older than
8, or has already completed a term or 2 of Intro to
basketball/Aussie Hoops/Dribblers/BeeBall, then you could
contact one of our local clubs Mordialloc Flyers
www.mordialloccommunitycentre.org.au, or Parkdale
Pacers at http://parkdalepacers.org/ and say that your child
would like to join a team, both train out of PSC.
DISTRICT ATHLETICS
The Mordialloc District athletics day will be at Dolamore
Reserve on Friday, September 13th. We are only able to put
1 student in each race in each age group, with 2 in the
1500m and 2 in the 800m. As a result of this many students
will have missed out on a place in the squad, who would
have performed well at the House sports day and would
dearly love to be there, in particular the Grade 3’s. The age
groups are 9/10 year olds, 11 year olds, and 12/13 year
olds, so the 9 your olds have to be stronger, faster and/or
fitter than the 10 year olds in order to gain a place on the
squad. In selecting the squad, we have taken into
consideration the House Sports results, plus the fitness
testing results, which are conducted at the beginning of
each term, plus our knowledge of the individual children.
If your child missed out on a spot and they are
disappointed, please help them by enacting Habits 5 (Seek
first to understand, then be understood), Habit 1 (Be
Proactive) and Habit 7 (Sharpen the Saw). They need to
understand that there are a limited amount of spots, and
that there are students who are better than them in
athletics. They can be proactive by investigating ways that
they can improve at athletics, perhaps by joining the
Mentone Little Athletics Club:
http://mentonelittleathletics.com.au, registration day is on
September 14. Or they can add skipping, walking the dog,
etc into their daily routine as a way of Sharpening the saw,
and improving their overall fitness.
THE DISTRICT ATHLETICS SQUAD IS:
9/10 GIRLS: Lily W, Emily, Zoe L, Erin, Marnie, Holly, Zoe
B, Jade, and Stephanie

Parktone Community Group A big hello to all, the children had a wonderful day for Book Week dressing up as their favourite characters, and the PCG are happy to announce that we were able make a wonderful profit of just over $260 from the book stall and the afternoon tea. Great job everyone and thank you to all the children and parents who donated the wonderful books, and the food for the afternoon tea. We hope that all the dad’s out there had a fantastic Father’s Day. The children were all able to purchase some wonderful goodies from the Father’s Day stall that was held on the 29
th August. Thank you to the parents that helped with the
organising, wrapping, setting up and selling. The stall made over $900, what a sensational effort. You may be aware that the PCG sent out an expression of interest notice, thank you to the wonderful parents that have handed these back. If you are interested in joining the team, please feel free to pop into one of our meetings. The meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the staffroom. DON’T FORGET: DATES TO REMEMEBER:
Trivia Night (23rd November) - Circle it in your
diary. This is the PCG’s major fundraiser and social
event for the year. Heaps of fun, more details to
follow.
If you would like to be part of the Parktone Community Group [PCG] and are not sure what it involves, or if you could help, please feel free to call me on 0423 095 677 (Peta). Regards from the PCG team.
Proactive Parktone Parents
We are interested to see how Parktone students use the 7 Habits and the Leader In Me outside of school. On a regular basis students display their growing understanding of the habits in school. We would like to hear about how our students are using their knowledge in everyday life. We are asking for positive examples of the leadership initiative and its impact on your child’s life. Please email your child’s classroom teacher (or write the example in your child’s diary) anytime you notice your child using the habits. Our aim is to collect and display these positive stories to share with the children and our community. Thank you for your assistance,
Charlene Macklin and Emily Commins.
KNITTERS still NEEDED
for
YARN BOMBING The Art room is desperately looking for any parents/grandparents/friends who would be interested in knitting 160 cm X 20cm lengths of wool for an upcoming yarn bombing project for art. Wool can be provided by the school or if you have any unwanted wool at home this would also be greatly appreciated. A box outside the art room will be left for potential knitters to grab a ball of wool. Lisa Poulter Visual Arts Teacher
