Reminders…... →Please do not drive into the parking lot to drop off students. We ask that
you drop them off at the curb, away from the crosswalk. Students line-up
and often travel through the parking lot on their way to and from class, and
in the interest of safety, we ask that the parking lot not be used for drop-offs.
→Students that bring their bikes, scooters, long boards or skateboards must be wearing helmets. No bikes, scooters,
long boards or skateboards are allowed to be used on the school grounds once students have arrived or at
dismissal times.
→We are a nut and scent free site. Please be aware that we have people in our building with life threaten-
ing allergies. We are asking for everyone’s support to ensure students, staff and community members are
safe.
Thank you for your understanding.

It's hard to believe we're coming to the end of September already. I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Jen Mills and I am the new guidance counsellor at Colby Village Elementary. I have been at Graham Creighton Junior High since 1998 and am happy to be joining the CVES community 30% of the time. I am scheduled to be here on Tuesdays and every second Friday. The other days, I will contin-ue in my role as counsellor at the junior high level.
As this is a new position to CVES, it will take some time to develop and organize. The big difference between junior high and elementary school is that I will require permission to meet with your child. So you might be wondering what a guidance counsellor does in elementary.
There are many reasons children come to guidance. Some of these might include:
problems with friendships and being with others
concerns about bullying and harassment
being worried or stressed about things that are happening in class, at school or outside of school
handling feelings (example anger/sadness)
looking for information or help for others
being scared or feeling unsafe for any reason just needing to be heard by someone who they can trust.
How can I work with students?
These might include:
seeing students individually
working with students in small groups with common concerns (ex. friendships, divorce, etc.)
providing sessions with classes or other smaller groups to help work on specific skills or offer important information (bullying, self esteem,
etc.) consultation and collaboration (parents, teachers, administration).
If you feel your child would benefit from meeting with me, please contact me at [email protected]. If your child is brought to my attention by the school, I will be in contact with you to get the proper consents filled out so we can get started.
I'm looking forward to my year at CVES. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
SAFE ARRIVAL With a 204 students in our school we would like to take care of all of them. So if your
child will not be attending school, or late we request that you
call the school (902-464-5152) any day that your child is absent or late. A message may be left on the answering machine. If your child becomes ill during the day we will call you or the person designated by you. For this reason it is important that we have the up-to-date telephone numbers on record.
PTO NEWS …….Wow, one month down already! Now that everyone's settling into their routines, the PTO is ramp-
ing up for another great year of events and fundraisers.
*The Nourish Your Roots campaign will take place this month, with funds raised going back into the school to support healthy
eating programs and initiatives. Forms will come home shortly with each student and are due back on October 18th, with pick
up date to be announced.
*The Halloween Howl will frighten and delight students on October 24th from 6:30-8:30 pm. This event features a spooky
haunted house and a chance to monster mash the night away at the dance in the gym! If you'd like to help with all the gory
details, please join us at the planning meeting taking place on October 2nd at 6:30 pm.
*Halloween is fun, but does anything beat the biggest holiday of them all?? Believe it or not, there are only 12 weeks left
until Christmas!! Let us help you with your shopping while raising funds for the school with our giftware catalogue, coming
home soon. Order forms will be due back on October 29th, giving you lots of time to finish wrapping so you can put your feet
up to enjoy the holidays!
*The next PTO meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 16th at 7:00 pm. It's never too late to join - in the spirit of
Halloween, we won't bite...hard.
*Our first Pizza Day will be Friday, October 4th and the next Popcorn Day is Friday, October 18th.
