Theology Roundtable

C hronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel García Márquez

tells the story of the murder of Santiago Nasar by the Vicario twins. The novella was based on real-life events that occurred to García Márquez's godbrother. García Márquez heard the story of a young couple that got married in Sucre and, on the day following their wedding, the groom rejected the bride due to her lack of virginity. Investigation determined that the bride had relations with her former boyfriend, who was consequently pursued and murdered by the bride’s two brothers in order to avenge the family’s honor.

The book explores the morality of the village’s collective responsibility in the murder of Santiago Nasar. Is anyone besides the two brothers responsible for Nasar’s death? Is anyone guilty? If so, how?

We will meet in the Community Room on Friday, April 3, at 9:15 a.m. Come and share your thoughts about the book. As always, our aim is to improve our understanding of our faith.

Keeping the Promise Alive Workshop Canceled

The re-certification workshop scheduled for

Monday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m. is canceled because of concerns about the

coronavirus. Thank you!

Bread for the World 2020 Can you lead our parish effort this year? We are looking for 2 team leaders, one of whom is Spanish-speaking. The date for the 2020 Offering of Letters campaign has not been selected yet. In the past, a weekend in June or October has been chosen.

Last year we had a great success in sending over 1,000 letters to our Senators and Representative urging continued support for women and children nutrition programs worldwide. This effort by Bread for the World congregations throughout the U.S. resulted in the first substantial increase since 2010 in funding that helps people who are struggling with poverty. Internationally, aid for global nutrition was increased by $5 million, allowing 50,000 more children to receive treatment for acute malnutrition.

What does this involve? It involves work on one weekend with some prep before and mailing after.

If interested, please contact Joe Lavin [email protected] or 201-960-5844.

Urgent Message Again

Once again Fr. Joe’s name has been used to communicate with parishioners to solicit money for gift cards. It is a scam!!!!! Please do not believe it.

A Message from the Pastor Mensaje de Nuestro Pastor

Dear Friends, While the coronavirus has been around for quite some time, it seems to me that it has finally hit us hard here in our area. Actually, the media is calling Teaneck the “epicenter” of the virus in New Jersey. Sadly, I think it will only be a matter of time until the rest of Bergen County, the state of New Jersey, and the nation catch up.

Father Danny and I, with our staff, are doing our best to keep up with “business” as usual and maintain life as uninterrupted as possible. I want to thank you for your constant prayers for us.

Regarding parish life, here’s what’s going on at the moment: • Masses: Sunday Masses are still suspended until further notice as of March 16. Our weekday 8:30 a.m. Mass remains open to the public Monday through Saturday as usual. Again, until the Township or the Archdiocese decides otherwise. If our weekday Masses need to be suspended as well, Father Danny will continue to celebrate that Mass privately each morning to honor your Mass intentions. For as long as necessary we will livestream the Sunday Mass and post it on our website! I’m calling it the “Mass-cast,” as it is a live broadcast Mass. Sorry, just trying lighten the mood. • Activities: Most are suspended until further notice. Including AA as per the Township, because of the number of attendees. All the activities of this past week are canceled or postponed. We will be reviewing it day by day. We will post updates on the parish website and place notes on the doors of the Church to keep you informed. • Personnel: Since there was no collection taken this weekend, and may not be taken for quite some time, I’m asking our part-time staff members to limit their hours or to work to only as necessary, and even work from home if necessary. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do your best to honor your Sunday commitment by dropping off your envelopes at the rectory. I can’t imagine how parishes will survive with no offertories. • Communication: Father Danny and I are at a huge handicap by not being able to communicate with you. When the coronavirus has ended, our office will initiate a new and up-to-date census, which will include your emails so we can more easily communicate with you in a second’s notice.

This past weekend I was so inspired by so many of you in your incredible love of your parish, and in particular the Sunday Eucharist. Thank you for that. We will survive this! And the Church will continue! But it will look different, I suppose, and that’s ok!!!

Let’s keep praying for each other!!!! Peace, blessings and fraternal regards, Rev. Joseph A. D’Amico

Paz, bendiciones y saludos fraternos, Rev. Joseph A. D'Amico
