New Ticket Pricing

It has been several years since the Phoenix held a full review of its prices and in that time our costs have increased across the board. Our priority is to remain affordable and inclusive while safeguarding the future of the Phoenix. We believe the new price bands are among the most competitive in London and even better value when combined with our Friends scheme, regular discounts and initiatives such as Bargain Mondays. As a charity and non-profit-making organisation, the price you pay for your ticket goes directly towards the upkeep of this beautiful, historic building as well as supporting our education and community work.

Thank you for continuing to support the Phoenix.

“As a local resident and long-term visitor of the Phoenix, I understand that price increases are rarely welcome; however, I hope other filmgoers feel as I do and want to ensure the Phoenix goes from strength to strength with the support of its loyal customers” - James Kessler, Chair of Trustees

1hr 38. France/Belgium 2015. Directed by Alice Winocour. With Matthias Schoenaerts, Diane Kruger, Paul Hamy.

Following his return from Afghanistan, Vincent - a French Special Forces soldier and victim of post-traumatic stress disorder - is responsible for protecting Jessie, the wife of a wealthy Lebanese businessman at their luxurious villa “Maryland” in the French Riviera. As he starts to experience a strange fascination for the woman he has to protect, Vincent increasingly seems to fall into a spiral of paranoia, hallucinations and anxiety.

With a Cannes Film Festival nomination under its belt, Disorder is the second feature by Parisian writer-director Alice Winocour (co-writer of Mustang on p11).

“A fine-cut tension exercise” - Guy Lodge, Variety

Anomalisa 15

FROM FRIDAY 1 APRIL

1hr 30. USA 2015. Directed by Duke Johnson, Charlie Kaufman. With David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Noonan.

Michael Stone is an author and motivational speaker specialising in customer service. But far from being dynamic or charismatic, Michael is unable to interact or connect deeply with others. Whilst on a business trip to Cincinnati, Michael meets Lisa, a besotted fan attending his talk, and the pair forge a connection, bonding over their insecurities and missed opportunities. In true Kaufman fashion, this surreal, existential, stop-motion animation is both thought-provoking and insightful, whilst the meticulously crafted puppets add an eerie yet visually stunning quality. Nominated for both an Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature.

“Charlie Kaufman achieves further artistic greatness” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Although they barely know one another, they attempt to build a life together - but struggle to find peace as a different kind of violence looms over their lives.

“A tense, compelling snapshot of immigrant life.” - Tim Robey, The Telegraph

FROM FRIDAY 15 APRIL

Eye in the Sky 15

1hr 42. UK 2015. Directed by Gavin Hood. With Helen Mirren, Aaron Paul, Alan Rickman.

Hard edged Colonel Katherine Powell is a UK-based military officer in command of a top secret drone operation to capture a terrorist group living in a safehouse in Kenya. Powell discovers the targets are planning a suicide bombing and the mission escalates from “capture” to “kill.” But just as drone pilot Steve Watts is about to engage, the appearance of a child in the kill zone triggers an international dispute over the moral, political, and personal implications of modern warfare. Featuring the late Alan Rickman in one of his final performances, Eye In The Sky is a military nail biter which carries wit, integrity and insight.

“This picture satisfies fully on entertainment terms without cheapening its real-world concerns.” - John Defore, The Hollywood Reporter

The Brand New Testament 15

1hr 53. Belgium/France/Luxembourg 2015. Directed by Jaco Van Dormael. With Catherine Deneuve, Pili Groyne, Benoît Poelvoorde, François Damiens.

Did you know that God is alive and lives in Brussels? This irreverent comedy tells the story of God who, living in human form, is a grumpy sadist who revels in tormenting humankind. His young and observant daughter Ea is fed up of her overbearing and abusive father, and devises a plan to band together six additional disciples to create a Brand New Testament and uplift the spirits of humanity.

The result is a charming and playful visual treat - plus Catherine Deneuve as you have never seen her before!

“An irresistibly funny work of the imagination.” - Deborah Young, The Hollywood Reporter

FROM FRIDAY 29 APRIL

Son of Saul 15

1hr 47. Hungary 2015. Directed by László Nemes. With Géza Röhrig, Levente Molnár, Urs Rechn.

Critically acclaimed, Academy and Golden Globe award winning Son of Saul brings an entirely fresh visual language to the most challenging of topics. Set in the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II, it focuses on Saul, a Jewish member of the Sonderkommando, who after discovering the body of his son, is determined to give him a dignified burial. This intense Hungarian feature is a masterful debut with a gaunt, fierce kind of courage. The film premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix.

“By any standards, this would be an outstanding film, but for a debut it is remarkable.” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

FROM FRIDAY 6 MAY

Florence Foster Jenkins PG

1hr 50. UK 2016. Directed by Stephen Frears. With Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant, Simon Helberg, Rebecca Ferguson.

Three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep takes on the voice of New York heiress Florence Foster Jenkins, a pianist who after an arm injury is left unable ever to play piano again. Jenkins begins to dream of becoming an opera singer, and despite having a terrible singing voice, enjoys a brief notoriety for her woeful performances. “People may say I can’t sing,” she is quoted, “but no one can ever say I didn’t sing.”

As always, director Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena) brings to the screen extraordinary stories and performances, with humour, compassion and a lightness of touch.

Mustang 15

1hr 37. France/Germany/Turkey/Qatar 2015. Directed by Deniz Gamze Ergüven. With Günes Sensoy, Doga Zeynep Doguslu, Tugba Sunguroglu, Elit Iscan, Ilayda Akdogan.

In a village in northern Turkey, five sisters play innocently with boys from school. When a neighbour comments on their behaviour, the family home becomes transformed by the girls’ traditional grandmother. Instruction in homemaking replaces school and marriages start being arranged. But the five sisters share a common passion for freedom and find ways of breaking through the constraints imposed upon them. Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards, Mustang is a coming-of-age tale of female empowerment.

“The fear of lost sexual innocence underpins this ebullient sibling comedy-drama with shades of Sofia Coppola.” - Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian11

FROM FRIDAY 20 MAY

Sing Street 12A

1hr 46. Ireland/UK/USA 2016. Directed by John Carney. With Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Aidan Gillen, Lucy Boynton, Maria Doyle Kennedy.

From the director of Once, comes Sing Street, a movie-musical set in 1980s Ireland. When Dublin teenager Conor relocates to a rough-edged boys’ school he comes across preternaturally cool teen and aspiring model Raphina, and is desperate to win her heart. With the help of a few school misfits, he cobbles together a tribute band in a bid to impress her. There are a variety of muscial styles that director John Carney has fun with, and the results ranging from New Romantic to New Wave, all top-notch and thumpingly in-period.

“A heart-melting adolescent romance that gives teenage garage bands everywhere a better name.” - Guy Lodge, Variety

The Daughter 15

1hr 36. Australia 2015. Directed by Simon Stone. With Geoffrey Rush, Anna Torv, Sam Neill, Miranda Otto.

Two families’ skeletons are hauled out of the closet with the arrival of Christian, an on/off the wagon alcoholic returning for the marriage of his father Henry to a decades-younger woman. Reconnecting with his childhood friend Oliver and his family, he unearths a long-buried secret. As he tries to right the wrongs of the past, his actions threaten to shatter the lives of those he left behind years before.

A reworking of Henrik Ibsen’s The Wild Duck, The Daughter delivers a powerful, low-key yet achingly intense reimagining.

“Deeply involving and emotionally searing.” - Eddie Cockrell, Variety
