WELCOME

It’s been a long, cold winter but as we approach spring our films are full of life! Hyde Park on Hudson, Hitchcock, Terrence Malick’s latest To The Wonder, and Paris Manhattan (our Valentine’s Day date with UKJF) look at love in its variations, whilst Lore, North London set drama Broken, and Romanian Beyond the Hills all have their own coming-of-age theme. Towards the end of the month we look at later life with Robot and Frank and Vanessa Redgrave in Song for Marion.

New to February for your little ones aged 2 to 4 is our Toddler Time shows. Bringing Up Baby continues on a weekly basis and we have a great line-up as ever for Kids Club on Saturday mornings.

To celebrate 150 years of the London Underground, our extremely popular From The Archives strand continues with Underground (1928), recently restored by the BFI, and the first appearance of the tube on film! Continuing the Underground theme we are delighted to host our first late night collaboration with Cigarette Burns Cinema - Death Line. Dark City Gallery are back for a one-off show of Bicycle Thieves. Patron Mark Kermode introduces a rare 35mm presentation of La Belle et la Bête followed by a Q&A, and the directors of war-photography doc McCullin will also be hosting a Q&A after their screening.

FROM FRIDAY 22 FEBRUARY

To The Wonder (12A)

1hr 53. USA 2012. Directed by Terrence Malick. With Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams. In English, French, Italian and Spanish (with English subtitles).

Following on from his Palme d’Or success, Terrence Malick premiered this, only his sixth film in 38 years, at the Venice Film Festival. Rumoured to be based on his own experiences, To The Wonder offers a story that we can all identify with - exploring with stunning imagery the exultations and highs of a new love and the crashing lows of it’s loss, and the struggles and problems inherent with faith and belief.

Kurylenko and Affleck play the lovers who meet in Paris and relocate to Oklahoma to start a new life together, while Bardem plays a Priest struggling with his vocation. Rachel McAdams is the childhood sweetheart battling with her own losses.

FROM FRIDAY 1 MARCH

Lore (15)

Exploring a little discussed aspect of the end of the Second World War, Lore is the story of five siblings who embark on an arduous journey when their Nazi SS parents are taken into Allied custody.

There’s a feel of the Post-Apocalypse road movie as the coming-of-age narrative follows the young family as they are forced to confront all they have been taught as they discover a nation trapped in post-war deprivation and denial, and reluctantly fall in with a young jewish survivor named Thomas.

Lore is the long-awaited follow-up by Australian director Cate Shortland’s astounding debut, Somersault.

HISTORY OF THE PHOENIx

The Phoenix Cinema is one of the UK’s oldest purpose-built, continuously operating cinemas. Beneath the vaulted ceiling which dates back to 1910, the history of film has been shared with millions of audience members. From silent films with live music through two world wars when newsreels were the only source of moving images that captured events overseas; from the clicking reels of 24 frames a second to the digital projection of today, the Phoenix has witnessed it all.

The other unique aspect of the Phoenix Cinema is that since 1985 it has been a cinema of the community, run by a charitable trust for the community. Saved from the wrecker’s ball by the formation of The Phoenix Cinema Trust, it is a wholly independent single screen cinema showing the latest independent and foreign films and reinvesting its profits in education work and maintaining this historic building.

HERITAGE & EDUCATION
