Student UpdateThe program would like to congratulate the class of 2016. They are the second cohort-style learning group admitted into the SHM program, which continued to promote close collaboration and helped develop great camaraderie among them. The program has accepted 37 SHM majors into the Fall 2016 cohort, all selected based on a competitive admission process. In addition, six SHM minors were admitted into the program. The current SHM students organized a potluck in Spring 2016 to welcome the new SHM cohort.

Our students continue to shine with their participation in the CWU American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Student Section. On May 13, 2016, the Section hosted, in conjunction with Puget Sound ASSE Chapter, a Professional Development Conference in the Student Union and Recreation Center Building. More than 100 safety and health professionals from across the state attended the event. The PDC’s efforts were led by our Alumnus Brian Van, Safety Director, Guy F. Atkinson Construction, LLC, and former President of the ASSE Puget Sound Chapter.

Safety and Health Management Class of 2016

The goal for the ASSE Student Section for the 2016-17 academic year is to be the most outstanding section in the nation. The Student Section elected their executive board for the 2016-17 academic year and they added several additional positions to fulfill its mission. Volunteering with ASSE not only supports and advances the organization, but as a student volunteer their professional network will grow, they will benefit from access to professional development opportunities, and gain insights to trends and innovations in the OSH profession.

Congratulations to the following section officers:

Alexa Manteufel, President | Andrew Lange, Vice President | Daniel Morris, Treasurer | Sarah Gerdes, Senator Alex Torres, Alternate Senator | Sefra Mendall, Special Projects # 1 | Lucas Winkelman, Special Projects # 2 Robyn Van Der Merwe, Media Relations | Jordyn Tucker, Public Affairs | Nelson Stanton, Secretary

Accreditation UpdateThe program is happy to announce that it has submitted the Request for Evaluation (RFE) to ABET’s Applied Science Commission. A team of three ABET evaluators will visit our campus in October 2016 to evaluate our program. It is a long process, and the final decision is anticipated by August 2017. This is the first time ABET will evaluate our program for accreditation. The program faculty, staff, CWU administration, and the program’s Industry Advisory Council have been working hard preparing for the visit. ABET accreditation is proof that a collegiate program has met standards essential to produce graduates ready to enter the critical fields of applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.

To learn more about ABET accreditation please visit: www.abet.org.

2015-16 DonorsWith the generous support of industry and alumni donations, we are able to produce the best, brightest, and most highly sought-after future safety professionals in the nation. From recruiting quality students, to exceptional faculty instruction, to a state-of-the-art learning environment, your investment in SHM program continues to support student success, resulting in direct and positive impacts on the safety profession. We want to thank the following SHM donors from June 16, 2015 to June 30, 2016. We sincerely appreciate your generosity.

When the program increased its enrollment in 2015 and added more equipment to meet its student outcomes, the original 2,000 square feet lab space (Safety Lab I) was deemed insufficient. The program submitted a request to the CWU Enterprise Facilities Committee to allocate additional dedicated lab space for the SHM program. The University approved Hogue 229 (Safety Lab II), a general lecture classroom, to be converted to a department controlled safety lab classroom in March 2016. One of the primary focus of this new lab will be to provide the students hands-on experience in evaluating ergonomic hazards and fire hazards. This new space will also serve as a reading room with an exclusive collection of environmental, health, and safety regulations, codes, books, training materials, and magazines. Two dedicated computer workstations for safety-related online reference will be added to this space. The SHM Program is working to furnish this new lab. Our main priority is to fund the SHM Program Support Fund and the SHM Lab Equipment Fund which will be used to equip the program’s second safety lab. With the alumni and industry support, we anticipate the lab will be complete by Fall quarter 2016.

Alumni At the annual “Alumni, Friends, and Graduating Seniors Night” in Ellensburg at the end of spring quarter, we asked our network to help us congratulate and celebrate the students as they start their professional careers. This year’s event was held in conjunction with the ASSE Puget Sound Chapter PDC on May 13, 2016. More than 20 alumni and friends attended. To accommodate for travel schedules, we will be hosting the event the evening before the annual PDC on campus. Save the date for the annual event and ASSE PDC on May 5, 2017.

We want to include news and updates of what our alumni are doing in future issues of Phoenix. Send yourlatest successes (within the past six months) to Sathy Rajendran at [email protected] for inclusion in our next newsletter. Please reconnect with program graduates in your network, and encourage them to get involved. Visit the SHM Alumni website for ways to participate, or contact Sathy Rajendran.

Faculty UpdatesThe program is happy to share that Dr. Sathy Rajendran was elected to serve as the Chair of the CWU Faculty Senate for the academic 2016-17 year. The Faculty Senate is the primary means by which the 500+ CWU faculty collectively share in the governance of Central Washington University by shaping the university’s academic environment. The Faculty Senate acts for and on behalf of the university’s faculty with respect to all academic matters and issues related to the intellectual life of the university.

The program completed a successful faculty search for the second SHM tenure-track faculty. Joining us will be Morgan Bliss, who comes with strong industrial hygiene and general industry background, with 10 years of industry and three years of teaching experience. She is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH). In addition to her employment as the Environment of Care (EOC) Safety Officer for three Dignity Health facilities in Phoenix, she also served as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Behavioral and Safety Science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Prescott, AZ, for the past three years. She has a passion for teaching and has expressed her strong commitment to fulfill SHM program’s primary missions, and to continuously improve the program and take us to the next level. She will be teaching industrial hygiene and building and facility safety courses in Fall quarter.
