Founded in 1778, Phillips Academy—widely known as Andover—is a place of great tradition and innovation. The school’s new strategic plan, Connecting Our Strengths: The Andover Endeavor, sets forth a vision to redefine excellence for our contemporary school and a mandate to seek new ways to prepare our students for lives of leadership and service in an increasingly interconnected world. Imagine a school where it’s cool to be smart. What if you could learn and grow in a warm, welcoming community surrounded by bright, curious, motivated peers and inspirational teachers? At Andover, not only is it cool to be excited about Renaissance literature, a mysterious 19th-century skeleton, or AP math—your classmates are likely to share your enthusiasm. Conversations—about issues like Middle East peace, gender roles, immigration, and sustainable energy—continue throughout the day.

Soccer practice, club meetings, dinner, a music or play rehearsal, library visits, and study periods are all opportunities for students and teachers to share experiences and perspectives. You may not always agree, but debate can be enlightening—and fun. By the time you turn out your light, you’ll be even smarter.

Imagine teachers who give you the freedom to think openly and deeply, to question and make mistakes. With more than 300 dynamic courses taught by a faculty of creative, caring, and deeply committed teachers and scholars, Andover’s rigorous academic program offers a strong foundation in the arts, humanities, mathematics, and natural sciences. Our more than 150 electives include student-faculty research, independent projects, and immersive learning opportunities locally and abroad.

There is no single teaching method. Faculty share a philosophy of “learning by doing” and a zeal for using technology to inform and empower. That means that your classes will likely include amazing lab experiments, TED Talks, online research, art gallery visits, a hike to Pomp’s Pond to study local geology, a French class at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology, and even hands-on fun with the low- and high-tech tools in our new Makerspace.

Students who arrive as budding poets or inquisitive scientists may discover new interests in Russian, macroeconomics, filmmaking, or astronomy. The Academy’s approach to teaching not only prepares students superbly for college, but also instills a lifelong love of learning.

Imagine being part of a community that celebrates your individuality.Andover embraces and educates “youth from every quarter.” These four words, from the Academy’s 1778 constitution, emphasize inclusivity. Students from all kinds of backgrounds with all sorts of interests, talents, perspectives, and dreams are welcome and belong at Andover. Course choices are phenomenal (where else can you take Critical Race Theory, Love That Dirty Water, and Data Structure and Algorithms?), and topics for independent projects are driven by your curiosity and passion.

Here, students are free to be themselves and to think about and grow into who they want to be—changemakers, we hope, in the field of their choosing. If you are a bright young person who wants to learn and also is eager to share, teach, and learn from others, we urge you to apply to Andover.

Imagine having tons of friends plus the constant support of dozens of caring adults. With dorms ranging in size from two to 44 students—and with as many as four faculty families living in a single dorm—you’ll find plenty of opportunities for close friendships with peers as well as deep conversations with faculty mentors. Andover’s residential experience, while encouraging personal growth and independence, offers a strong safety net of adults who monitor and care deeply about your academic success and personal well-being.

Each Andover student—boarding or day—is a member of one of five “clusters.” In these smaller campus neighborhoods, students and their house counselors form close bonds, creating a network of support and encouragement outside the classroom. Cluster friends socialize and attend special events together, gather for munches (food!), and take part in intra-cluster games and competitions.

Innovators, explorers, and entrepreneurs welcome!

The Tang Institute at Andover helps turn imagination into action. As a lab for ideas and collaborative projects, the Institute draws faculty and students together to create, experiment, prototype, and take “next steps” toward meaningful outcomes. Through off-campus learning programs, the Insti-tute also supports Andover’s commitment to preparing students to navigate life in an increasingly global, complex, and interconnected society.

By harnessing the curiosity, talent, and intelligence of the school community, the Institute explores new teaching tools and techniques, enriches learning,

and supports excellence at Andover. Students are at the heart of many projects: they film chemistry lab videos, develop Khan Academy math problems, contribute to our Learning Disposition series, serve as Global Ambassadors, and will be the central “builders” of the library’s new Makerspace.

“Connected learning” is huge at Andover, and the Tang Institute helps it happen. Students learn from teachers in traditional classroom settings—as well as from online learning tools and interactions with peers, teammates, mentors, guest speakers, thought leaders, and public servants—and draw meaningful connections between and among their conversations and experiences.

“Learning in the World” is also a form of connected learning. Robust programs in Russia, China, Peru, India, Brazil, and South Africa—in addition to New Mexico and the American South—are among the many international and domestic opportunities open to all students, thanks to Tang Institute support.

Imagine “being blue” and loving it!“Being blue” can mean winning a championship or cheering wildly from the stands. Either way, you are part of a passionate team. Andover fields 67 interscholastic teams (varsity and JV) in 21 sports. Led by dynamic faculty-coaches and aided by an experienced staff of athletic trainers, Andover teams compete against the strongest preparatory schools in New England. Smile! Action photos and sports highlights are published weekly in The Phillipian student newspaper.

The whole campus gets fired up about sports, and there are celebrations large and small. It doesn’t matter if you’re a top scorer, record-setter, or dedicated team player. If you’re training hard, putting team before self, and having fun, you’re being blue.

Love a good workout? Looking for a less structured outlet? Join an intramural team; learn modern dance, jazz, and ballet; try spinning, yoga, and Zumba. With excellent facilities and access to sports and fitness at all levels, Andover offers dozens of healthy ways to connect mind, body, and spirit.

Imagine a place where the arts play a leading role.Perform and create. At Andover, these two simple words are veritable mandates, because you need to exercise and stretch both sides of your brain. Play the lead in a musical or perform a solo on a Steinway grand. Produce a documentary or travel internationally with the choir. Throw a pot, make a sculpture from found objects, learn the painting styles of the masters.

Some students relish the company of 80 friends in the Academy Orchestra, while others prefer the quiet of the darkroom or a solitary easel in the Elson Art Center. You’ll have the opportunity to grow your talents through master classes and will be guided not only by talented faculty, but also by world-renowned visiting artists, actors, dancers, and musicians.

Imagine an experience that teaches you the enduring values of service and leadership.Guided by founding principles that remain relevant even today, Andover prepares students not only for college, but also for a life of service and leadership. The notion of compassionate engagement with others has helped define and guide the Academy for centuries. Non sibi (not for self) is more than an imprint on the school seal. From mentoring youth to lobbying Congress to joining international relief efforts, non sibi becomes a way of life.

Andover’s constitution proclaims: “goodness without knowledge is weak…yet knowledge without goodness is dangerous…and that both united form the noblest character, and lay the surest foundation of usefulness to mankind.”

An Andover education presents both opportunity and responsibility. You will be called to many tasks and challenges at Andover and, upon graduation, will join a network of 22,000 alumni. Ultimately, you will be called to make a difference in the world.

What will you do?

Imagine receiving a generous scholarship.Financial need should never discourage a student from applying to Phillips Academy. Andover’s “need-blind” admission policy, implemented in 2008, ensures that the most qualified students are admitted—regardless of their families’ ability to afford tuition.

Need-blind admission guarantees that 100 percent of the demonstrated need of each admitted student will be met with financial aid scholarships.

Scholarships are not based on predetermined family income limits. A family’s unique financial

circumstances and the projected total cost of the student’s Andover education (i.e., tuition, room and board, and other expenses) determine scholarship amounts. Learn more at www.andover.edu/financialaid.
