PFASI’s Fifth Annual Parol Workshop
Philippine Folk Arts Society, Inc., (PFASI) launched the 2012 holiday season with its fifth annual Parol
Making Workshop on December 1. More than 50 people joined in the festivities -- enjoying food,
games, line-dancing, entertainment and the traditional parol-making competition.
PFASI President Dr. Aida Rivera welcomed guests and taught introductory steps to parol-making. PFASI’s
Rondalla/string ensemble entertained guests with Christmas carols and Filipino music. Youth dancers
from Kapitbayan KFAAI performed Tinikling.
After hours when everyone worked hard on crafting their traditional Philippine lanterns, the parol
created by Victor Ficarra, a fifth-year veteran of PFASI’s event, won the “Best Construction” award.

Michael Nicolas and family, new to PFASI, crafted the award winning “Most Creative” parol. They used
paper cups in the “tail” and wove paper towel strips into the unique design.
Flori Ann Spranzate’s first-ever parol won “Best Parol” of the competition. Judges noted that with its
intricate snowflake designs, the winning parol was both creative and well-crafted.
“With so many beautiful parols, it’s a challenge to choose “the best.” All should be winners,” noted Joan
May Cordova, one of three judges and event emcee. PFASI thanks all who made the celebration a
success! For more photos: http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8AbsW7Ju3atlF8k
