PALM SUNDAY…MAKE THIS A HOLY WEEK

One of the many moving experiences of my pilgrimage to the Holy Land a few years ago was to stand on the Mount of Olives and overlook the city of Jerusalem. I could not help but think that this is where Our Lord stood as he entered the city on Palm Sunday with shouts of Hosanna. Our Jewish guide explained to our group that the word Jesus would have heard in Hebrew was: Hoshiyana (pronounced Hoshi-Ya- Na). Mistakenly, I always thought an accurate translation of Hosanna would be the English word “alleluia,” a word of praise or exaltation. An ancient equivalent to the E-A-G-L-E-S chant at an Eagles game. But our Jewish guide told us that Hoshiyana is actually is a cry for help. An accurate translation is: Save Us, Please. That makes more sense to me. As Jesus is coming into Jerusalem and the word has spread of his healings and teachings and that He may be the long-awaited Messiah, they are not patting him on the back, giving high 5s and shouting hooray. The people are pleading for help. “Save us please!” “Jesus, Save us!” Of course, we know that Jesus does save us. Not by an army of strength but by the suffering and death that awaits our Lord at the end of this Holy Week. We all need the Savior.

Holy Week has a way of sneaking up on us. If you do not regularly attend Mass with us, I am glad you are here today, on Palm Sunday, and hope you feel welcome and come back because we need you. If you have not gone to the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent please try to go to Confession this week. The best way to prepare for the Easter celebration next weekend is to attend our Holy Week Triduum services on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and at the Easter Vigil or Easter Sunday. Have a Blessed Holy Week. Remember to pray: Hoshiyana: Jesus, Save us Please!

DOMINGO DE RAMOS … HAGA DE ESTA UNA SEMANA SANTA

De mis peregrinaciones una de las muchas experiencias conmovedoras a Tierra Santa hace unos años fue pararme en el Monte de los Olivos y contemplar la ciudad de Jerusalén. No pude evitar pensar que ahí es donde estaba Nuestro Señor cuando entró en la ciudad el domingo de Ramos con gritos de Hosanna. Nuestro guía judío explicó a nuestro grupo que la palabra que Jesús habría escuchado en hebreo era: Hoshiyana (pronunciado Hoshi-Ya-Na). Por error, siempre pensé que una traducción precisa de Hosanna sería la palabra inglesa "aleluya", una palabra de alabanza o exaltación. Un antiguo equivalente al canto E-A-G-L-E-S en un juego de las Aguilas. Pero nuestro guía judío nos dijo que Hoshiyana es en realidad un grito de ayuda. Una traducción precisa es: Sálvanos, por favor. Eso tiene más sentido para mí. No por un gran ejército, sino por el sufrimiento y la muerte que esperan a nuestro Señor al final de esta Semana Santa. Todos necesitamos al Salvador. La Semana Santa nos podemos acercarnos generosamente los unos a otros. Si no asiste regularmente a misa con nosotros, me alegro de que esté aquí hoy, el domingo de Ramos, y espero que se sienta bienvenido y regrese porque lo necesitamos. Si no ha asistido al Sacramento de Reconciliación durante la Cuaresma, intente confesarse esta semana. La mejor manera de prepararse para la celebración de Pascua el próximo fin de semana es asistir a nuestros servicios de Triduo de Semana Santa el Jueves Santo, el Viernes Santo y la Vigilia Pascual o el Domingo de Pascua. Announcing Our Parish Mission When we conducted our parish survey a few months ago a frequent request was to have a Parish Mission, thus I am happy to announce to our parish family that we will have a Parish Mission, beginning the weekend of Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27-28, through Wednesday, May 1st . The Mission will be led by Fr. John Petrikovic, OFM Cap., a Capuchin Franciscan friar priest whose full-time ministry is preaching and evangelization. The theme of Father’s Mission is: “Disciples in Footsteps: Finding and Following Jesus.” Father’s theme works so well with the call of Pope Francis to proclaim the Joy of the Gospel to our family and our community. Father will preach at our morning and evening Masses and will also visit our school. Please invite family members, friends, neighbors, and especially someone you know who may have left the active practice of the faith. Help someone to once again encounter the love of Christ. We are ALL CALLED to be disciples and to announce the Good News. Please help spread the word about our Parish Mission.

**Our Summer Faith Formation Program is planned for July 9th through July 19th, Monday through Friday, 8:00am-12:00noon. We are in need of a few volunteers to help in the program as catechists and classroom aides. No experience is necessary, just the willingness to share your faith with the children of the parish. All materials and training are provided. **Registration for our Summer Faith Formation Program is now open for all children going into the 3 rd through 8th grades. Information on this program was emailed home to all families on March 25th. Please register early as space is limited.
