Perception and CompositionVisual perception involves a complex interplay of both inborn and learned responses to visual stimuli. The Gestalt laws of perception summarize tendencies that appear to be innate or inherent in our biological heritage and which undoubtedly serve as the basis for our concept of composition in visual art.

Tendency toward �gure-ground: There is a tendency to interpret visual data as objects against a background, or more precisely, �gures against a ground.

Figure-Ground

Similarity facilitates grouping: Objects which resemble one another tend tobe seen as belonging together.

Similarity

ProximityProximity facilitates grouping: Objects placed close together tend toform a �gure.

ClosureTendency toward closure: Missing visual information is �lled in by the brain. The eye closes the open parts of a �gure because it wants to see awhole rather than a collection of unrelated parts.

ContinuityTendency toward continuity: An interrupted linear �gure is similarly �lled in by the brain.

TypographyTypography is designing with type, not the designing of type. It involves 1) choosing and using type, and 2) the application of design principles to the setting of type: the arrangement, style, and general appearance ofmatter printed with type.

SpacingLetters and words need to be spaced in a logical, consistent manner to appear optically correct, and achieve optimum readability. In letter-spacingthere are three standards. Minimum space is used between cursive (oo) letters, or between inclined (xy) letters. Medium space is used between vertical and cursive letters (lo). Between vertical letters (ll) maximum spaceis used. Good word-spacing is achieved by making all space intervals between words "look" the same. Words must not appear to run together orbe spaced so widely as to appear to be separate units. One system is to imagine a lower case "n" between words. This gives a moderate word-spacing.

The GridThe grid is an underlying structure organizing data. It articulates space according to a pattern of oppositions: vertical and horizontal, top and bottom, rectangular and diagonal, and left and right. If used well it provides perceptual organization, coherence and consistency. A well-conceived grid alone will not ensure e�ective design. It is an organizational tool, and must be used creatively to maximize communications potential. Grids can help answer compositional questions such as balance, proportion, sequence, unity/harmony,and contrast.

Layout: Composition with Type and ImagesLayout involves the following set of interrelated basic design principles:

Each design problem has unique di�erences and an in�nite number of possible visual solutions. The process to generate alternate visual solutions to a problem can be described as follows:

The Graphic Design Process

1. De�nition of needs, criteria and limits of the design problem (problem identi�cation), 2. Production of many preliminary sketches (thumbnails), 3. Re�nement of selected sketches (roughs), 4. Analysis of roughs, 5. Selection/decision, 6. Implementation (and preparation for print). 7. After problem identi�cation, the process follows a cyclic pattern from preliminaries through re�nement, analysis, and selection to implementation. 8. The process grows by constantly checking backwards. 9. In the design process, the establishment of priorities is essential. 10. Designers must be able to judge and gauge the relative importance of factors as they relate to one another. 11. Priorities set the functional and visual criteria in communications.

Design may be considered as an instrument of organization. It must perform in response to human needs. Design is an urgent requirement, not a cosmetic addition. Graphic design can save time by presenting information more clearly. It enhances communication, it helps people to understand a given message and accelerates learning. Design is �nding the best solution to a problem within thelimitations of the problem.

Graphic designers communicate and express themselves in four distinct ways. They need to have a working knowledge of typography, illustration, photography/video, and symbolism.

To design is much more than simply to assemble, to order, or even to edit; it is to add value and meaning, to illuminate, to simplify, to clarify, to modify, to dignify, to dramatize, to persuade, and perhaps even to amuse. To design is totransform prose into poetry. Design broadens perception, magni�es experience, and enhances vision. Design isthe product of feeling and awareness, of ideas that originatein the mind of the designer and culminate, one hopes, in the mind of the spectator. - (Paul Rand, Form + Content)

BalanceBalance is created by moving around "optical weights", big and small items, dark and light items, varieties of shapes.

Good proportion is achieved by deciding on space between image and type, between type and the edge of the paper,between columns of type,between type-size, line- length and leading, between di�erent visual elements, etc.

Proportion

SequenceSequence is created by directing the viewer, for example, through the useof lines, real or implied; by arranging images in such a way that an edge or a force from one �ows into an adjoining one. One does not leave to chance the order in which the viewer perceives the items in the layout.

Unity/HarmonyUnity and harmony are achieved by "�tting" all visual elements, type, illustrations, and photos into the style/mood of the layout.

ContrastContrast is achieved through di�erentiation in size, color, and shape. Giving the same graphic emphasis to several elements will make themcompete for attention.

SymbolismA symbol is a representation, verbal or visual, of a concept, object, idea, etc., the meaning of which is mutually agreed upon. In graphic design, the e�ective use of symbolism, combining and relating symbols, enhances the expression of ideas. It creates recognition, association and meaning.

This is an exercise in hierarchyin which I had to arange text on apage so that it would become readable.

In this project I created a new type of CD casefor a band named DualCore. They mostly rapabout computers, hacking and other thingsnerds enjoy.

My case looks like a laptop to pay tribute to the songs and the war driving scene. The screen isfrom a screen shot from a popular linux distrobution meant to be used for network penetration testing. I modeled the CD after arecord because there is a certain nostalgia in hissongs for older technologies.

This project was a continuation ofthe previous one, the CD packaging.We had to create a poster, ticket andenvelope for a concert the bandwas going to have. I tried to keep with same theme. I tried to design a ticketthat would actually be made out ofchips and circuits. The QR code in thecenter of main processor of the ticketactually works and gives you the sameinformation as to the left of it. My ideawas that you could use RFID in this and just press your ticket up against a sensorto be let in.

For this project I picked a designer,in this case, Frank Lloyd Wright, andcreated a symbol that representedhis work. This was particularly di�cult because Wright designedso many things, so it was hard to encompass it all in one image.Though, I think i succeeded in doing most of this. The warm earth colors representing his useof nature in his work and the architechural line drawing of the image pays tribute to the buildingshe designed through out his life.

In this project I was asked to createa stamp for the same designer as the previous one. I tried to imatateFrank Lloyd Wright’s furniture designand abstract it.

In this project I created a logo for a magazinecalled 2d and 3d Design. The logo does nothave any speci�c colors assigned to it. I imagined it as white on a full color photo.If you were to add color to it, it would have tostick with one color and use di�erent hues to accent the ‘D’. In the following pages you willsee the layout and the spreads for the magazine.
