    CHINESE INFLUENCES

    New Stone Age Chinese started to establish trade contacts withthe people in some areas of the Southeast Asian region includingthe early Filipinos

    10th century A.D. Filipino-Chinese relations began

    Trade relations between the Philippines and China only flourishedduring the Tang Dynasty, which was around 618 to 907 A.D.

    Professor H. Otley Beyer (Father of Philippine Anthropology)noted that the products manufactured during the Tang Dynastywere brought by Arab merchants who also had a strong traderelation with the Chinese.

    Such historical finding is evident in the unearthed Tang Dynastywares discovered in Cagayan de Sulu, Jolo, Cebu, Bohol, Mindanao,Manila, etc.

    Trade was conducted on a whole sale basis in which Tondobecame the main trading center during that time.

    Wholesale trading was used in internal trade transactions.

    Jade, coins, scales, mirrors, and porcelain wares were mostcommon trade products.

    The quality of the porcelain ware made during the Sung Dynastywas high as compared to the porcelain ware produced duringthe Yuan Dynasty.

    The term Bathala was based on the Sanskrit word

    Bhattara, which means Great Lord.

    Bathala refers to the supreme being of the Tagalogs during thepre-colonial period

    Sanskrit refers to the sacred/holy language of Hinduism, Jainismand Mahayana Buddhism

    Some original Filipino fables and epics were influenced byIndian literature such as the story of monkey and the turtle,the tale of the race between the deer and the snail, and theanecdote of the hawk and the hen of the Visayas region.

    Filipino-Japanese relations began as early as 654 A.D.

    Some traders settled permanently in Cagayan, Lingayen, andManila because according to them the Philippines was a greatplace to live.

    The Japanese traders were the ones who introduced leather-making, manufacture of tools and weapons, and artificialbreeding of ducks and fish.
