Everyone reading this is familiar with the SVP balancing act. One moment we’re searching the horizon, identifying what it takes to generate real, transformative change: the next moment it’s back to earth, managing the daily business of running an SVP or immersing oneself in a volunteer project. It’s enough to generate a case of whiplash, the way a typical SVP day veers between reaching for the stars and reaching for a calculator and a spreadsheet.

This year’s conference will appeal to both imperatives: a generous serving of speakers and sessions that inspire and motivate us and a decent helping of topics that will ground our SVP practice, keep our core strong and our organizations healthy. It’s a balanced diet that blends bold ambition and pragmatic, disciplined action and growth.

Holding these two constructs simultaneously can be challenging, but it’s a whole lot more fun when we can meet in an exciting city like Austin and talk, laugh, argue and dream with people who care about this stuff as much as we do.

In a few days each of us will head home, filled with the spirit of this gathering, ready once more to tackle

the hard work of change. Let’s make the most of our time together and the chance we have to draw on the concentrated energy, wisdom and experience in the room.

We look forward to our time together and want to especially thank our conference speakers, sponsors and advisory committee for their support of our shared work.

BREAKOUTBREAKOUTS – 10:15 AM Conversational Leadership Location: Capitol Ballroom ABC

Presenter: Monique Breault – Client Solutions Lead, CONVERSANT and Principal, 9types

As more and varied stakeholders are engaged in finding solutions to communities’ challenges, the collective knowledge of the group can create new ideas, foster unique connections, and lead to opportunities for action. For this to happen, a skilled conversational leader must be able to move away from command-and-control and “invite the unexpected” - recognizing conversation as a core process for effecting positive systemic change.

In this session, Monique will outline the foundations and framework of conversational leadership and give you the opportunity to practice reaching an intersection with others by articulating powerful questions, embracing ambiguity, and making the most of different points of view. Learn how to employ conversational leadership in your work with SVP, its investees, and the broader community.

Dig it Baby! What “Mad Men” Teaches us About the Business of Fundraising Location: Capitol View Terrace South

Presenters: Vincent Duckworth – President and Prime Consultant, Crescendo Fundraising Inc.; Andrea Morris – Senior Director, Office of Advancement, University of Alberta

AMC’s award-winning hit television series Mad Men has a lot more going for it than the captivating characters from a bygone era. The inner workings of a fictional upstart Manhattan advertising firm have much to teach and remind today’s nonprofit and philanthropic leaders about how to:

• Organize and develop your team to nurture and grow relationships;

• Understand the importance of timing in a fund development relationship; and,

• Pitch a case for support.

With stories from an era of excitement and huge social change and a profession that came of age over 50 years ago, this session will stimulate much needed debate amongst leaders about how we are organizing and ultimately winning our campaigns.

Using a series of multimedia vignettes drawn from the first four seasons of Mad Men as discussion stimulants and a backdrop for deeper group exploration, this fun, interactive and instructive session will be sure to change your thinking about the most important elements of the fund development process.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17TH –8:30 AM

Paul Shoemaker “What’s Your ‘Can’t Not Do’?” Location: Capitol Ballroom D & E

Conventional wisdom holds that we need more innovative solutions or more money to solve our world’s complex social problems. The truth from the trenches is: we already have numerous proven solutions for our many challenges; what our world needs most are more people prepared to act on their social drives and become truly committed to an issue, for the long haul. Paul Shoemaker – founding president of Social Venture Partners International and a leader in the engaged philanthropy movement since day one – uses a mix of storytelling and seven questions that will inspire and remove perceived obstacles to unlock people’s potential to become positive change agents in our communities and our world.

Paul is committed to work in the community, serving on the boards of several organizations including the Microsoft Alumni Foundation and Partners for Our Children. Past work includes Microsoft Alumni Foundation; Board Treasurer of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations; Children’s Alliance in Seattle and Treepeople in Los Angeles.

In 2011 and 2012, Paul was named among the Top 50 of Power and Influence acknowledging the nonprofit sector’s top executives and thinkers by the Nonprofit Times. In 2013 he received the Red Winged Leadership Award from Seattle University’s Albers School of Business and Economics and the Philanthropist of the Year Award from Future in Review.

Before coming to SVP Seattle in 1998, Paul was group manager for worldwide operations at Microsoft Corporation where he developed a group of 22 direct marketing professionals and implemented a direct marketing infrastructure. Prior to his work at Microsoft, Paul was a Product Manager at Nestle USA in Glendale, CA.

Paul holds an MBA in Marketing and Finance from the University of Texas and a BBA in Accounting from Iowa State University. Paul enjoys life with his wife and three sons. He’s an avid sports fan, especially of his own kids’ teams, and enjoys his hobby as a high school basketball referee.

BREAKOUTBREAKOUTS – 10:15 AM Impact Investing and the SVP Network Location: Capitol Ballroom FGH

Presenters: Curt Bassett – Partner, Impact Investment Leaders; Norm Bontje – Partner, SVP Seattle; Tasha Seitz – Partner, SVP Chicago

Impact investing – an approach that intentionally seeks to create both financial return and positive social or environmental impact – is growing rapidly in popularity around the world, and has the potential to unlock significant sums of capital to complement philanthropy in addressing a community’s challenging issues. SVP partners across the network have experimented and are earnestly engaging in impact investment opportunities as individuals and in groups. In this session you’ll hear from three SVP partners and seasoned impact investing practitioners about the principles and strategies that guide their practices. You’ll also explore ideas about how your investees or other organizations in your community might be able to benefit from these kinds of funds.

Making Capacity Projects Stick! How to get buy-in and integrate change that comes with capacity buildingLocation: Capitol View Terrace North

Presenter: Jen Hamilton – Partner, SVP San Diego

Have you tried to implement great ideas in an organization, but instead you were met with resistance from the team? With all of the blood, sweat, and tears you put into drumming up innovative ideas, implementing capacity building and overall organization improvement you deserve to have buy-in! However, it can be hard for people to accept change and not go back to the old ways of doing things because it forces them outside their comfort zone. It doesn’t have to be this difficult! You can get the buy-in you want and deserve to fully integrate changes so that your innovation, plans, and strategies will have a lasting impact.

This workshop is designed for SVP partners, board members, and nonprofit leaders to…

• Learn change-management strategies to get the team to really buy-in and implement new ideas.

• Understand the 3 ways to self-motivate team members to integrate capacity building projects into their work.

• Discover the structure to successfully integrate projects that will last and be sustainable.

BREAKOUTBREAKOUTS – 11:45 AMBringing Mindfulness to Your Leadership PracticesLocation: Capitol Ballroom ABC

Presenter: Chris Block – Chief Executive Officer, American Leadership Forum – Silicon Valley

When we are born, start a family, or begin a career we often see things with a great deal of freshness and clarity; much like the

FRIDAY SESSIONSview from a well-polished window. The vicissitudes of life can act like the passage of time on a window, causing it to become increasingly dirty. We begin to use only a small portion of the window, a corner that is cleaner than the rest. As a result our view is extremely restricted. A mindfulness practice is a way to keep polishing the window of our lives, allowing us to see the possibilities that exist to live life fully, experience our families completely, and have fulfilling careers.

The Momentum Equation – What Drives Campaign Giving

Location: Capitol View Terrace South

Presenters: Vincent Duckworth – President and Prime Consultant, Crescendo Fundraising, Inc.; Andrea Morris – Senior Director, Office of Advancement, University of Alberta

In every successful campaign, we attempt to mobilize people and support behind a big idea that has the potential to transform our society. There is a science behind this mobilization. It is the physical science of momentum.

Momentum is a critical concept for more than just physics. We understand momentum (or the lack of it) in our everyday lives.

For big ideas, momentum is the defining characteristic of success. Inertia is the defining characteristic of failure.

Your Campaign is a Big Idea! (or it better be).

In this session, participants will go on an interactive journey through the major momentum factors associated with all capital campaigns, learn how to prevent inertia, and drive people and gifts to our charitable goals.

The Role of Engaged Funders in Scaling Nonprofits Location: Capitol Ballroom FGH

Presenters: Greg Coussa – Country Director USA, International Centre for Social Franchising; Terri Sorenson – President, Friends of the Children

As the recent winner of the Social Impact Exchange’s (SIE) Scaling Social Impact Business Plan Competition, Friends of the Children (FOTC) has scaled their program to a number of cities across the United States and the United Kingdom, yet seek to scale even further. Come hear FOTC president Terri Sorensen give her winning scaling plan presentation, and hear from Greg Coussa, a judge at this year’s SIE Competition, on what he and the other judges saw in Terri’s presentation as it pertains to scaling FOTC’s model. Greg is the US Director of the International Centre for Social Franchising (ICSF), a nonprofit consultancy that systematically helps nonprofits scale their impact. Social Venture Partners have a unique opportunity to pool resources (human, financial, expertise, etc.) to help local nonprofits deliver impact in a more effective and efficient manner. In this session, funders and audience members can expect to walk away with knowledge and tools about what it means to be scale ready, the different routes to scale, and what social replication is as a specific scaling strategy.

FRIDAY SESSIONSMaximizing Impact with the Nonprofit Effectiveness Framework Location: Capitol View Terrace North

Presenter: Tara Kirkland – Chief Programs and Services Officer, Greenlights; Marisa Zappone – Research Manager, Greenlights

What does it mean to be a high-performing nonprofit organization? Which organizations have the capacity to truly make a difference? For those working for social change, defining effectiveness within the nonprofit sector is critical.

This interactive session will highlight what Greenlights (which recently merged with Austin’s SVP Chapter) has learned about the critical elements and practices common to successful organizations -- the “effectiveness framework.” You will also learn how Greenlights is planning to use this framework with Central Texas nonprofits at various stages of the life cycle. Participants will also have the opportunity to reflect on how performance is evaluated in their chapters, and discuss how such an effectiveness framework might be used to better leverage investee impact.

1:00 PM LUNCH “Igniting Ideas” ExerciseLocation: Capitol Ballroom D & E

Facilitator: Ben Aase – Principal, CliftonLarsonAllen

RAPID ROUNDRAPID ROUNDS – 2:15 PMSelect from a variety of short TED-style talks focused on SVP-centric themes, then move onto the Deeper Dive Discussion of your choice to delve deeper into the topic with the presenter.

Investee Growth Feasibility StudiesLocation: Capitol Ballroom ABC

Presenter: Krystyna Williamson – Partner, SVP Calgary

After “picking all the low-hanging fruit” in its capacity building work with an investee, SVP Calgary engaged a small army of its partners to work on a needs assessment and growth feasibility study. This work resulted in a 5-year roadmap for growth and the accompanying change management needs. The map addressed human resources, finances, facilities, marketing, fund development, governance and risk management. Hear from SVP Calgary Partner Krystyna Williamson about the development and implementation of the assessment and its outcomes.

Attracting Government Funding to Scale SolutionsLocation: Capitol View Terrace North

Presenter: Madeleine Clarke – Executive Director, Genio

Governments invest significant amounts every year in an effort to address social problems which persist. The gap in funding required by social systems continues to grow with the increase in

the numbers of people living into their eighties and nineties and fewer people working.

Philanthropists often fund the development and testing of models of best practice but their strategies for mainstreaming on the basis of proven success alone have been shown to be overly optimistic. Pilot and demonstration projects that do not have realistic and pre-designed mainstreaming strategies often fade away after the funding expires. Approaches to scaling generally involve finding new resources to replicate or multiply projects which often exist in parallel to the public services.

We need to bring together those who want to solve problems which are not possible for them to solve individually. This means fostering collaboration between the public, private and not-for-profit sectors.

Switching Horses Mid-(funding)-StreamLocation: Capitol View Terrace South

Presenter: Austin Buchan – Chief of Staff, College Forward; Lisa Fielder – CEO and Co-Founder, College Forward

Even the most successful nonprofits face stark choices in allocating resources: invest in robust fund development (hoping it will bring in enough money to fund growth) - or sink every available dollar into growth (and hope it will eventually fund operations). After analyzing its funding history and the local philanthropic landscape, College Forward made the difficult decision to reallocate resources 180 degrees, shrinking their development department and investing every dime in building an earned revenue engine.

Three years ago, College Forward was a classic, philanthropy-driven nonprofit. Two years from now, it will be self-supporting. Learn how this organization has navigated the transition by:

• making a realistic assessment of available funding models;• gaining the enthusiastic support of their Board and committed

RAPID ROUNDRAPID ROUNDS – 2:35 PM The Future of Social EntrepreneurshipLocation: Capitol View Terrace North

Presenter: Pamela Ryan – Co-Founder and Chair, Tingari-Silverton Foundation

The social impact landscape is at a tipping point. Transforming technologies are enabling individuals and groups to join governments, NGO’s and socially responsible corporations in designing strategies to disrupt our planet’s most intractable problems. We are witnessing the emergence of a powerful global conscience, a conscience fuelled by the connected, aware Millennials and those in older generations pursuing purpose. Over the last few months, researchers from the Tingari-Silverton Foundation and the Institute for the Future have been systematically interviewing some of the world’s leading thinkers, makers and doers in this social impact movement. Learnings from

these interviews, combined with data from futures workshops and surveys, enable the mapping of emerging trends in impact enterprise / investment; and the exploration of how we can facilitate the most positive possible futures for individuals and enterprises tackling the world’s most wicked challenges, and ultimately the people who endure the daily realities of those challenges.

Encore Fellows - a Catalyst for ImpactLocation: Capitol Ballroom ABC

Presenter: Jim McGinley – Encore Fellows Program Director, SVP Network Office

The SVP Encore Fellows program is designed to deliver new sources of talent to organizations solving critical social problems. With millions of highly-experienced, highly-skilled professionals retiring annually, Encore Fellows is harnessing that talent for the social-purpose sector. The program matches seasoned professionals transitioning out of the private sector with structured assignments at social purpose organizations where they help build capacity and ultimately have a greater impact on their communities. Fellows commit to a 1000 hours of work (typically half time for a year), receive a modest stipend, are imbedded as part of the nonprofit leadership team and are part of local and national cohorts to accomplish their work and learn more about the sector. They also receive a one year membership in SVP. Social Venture Partners currently operates the program in four locations in the US and Canada and discussions are taking place with others throughout the network to expand further. The Encore career movement is focused on changing the conversation from “What are you going to do in retirement?” to “What’s your encore?” The movement is growing rapidly and receives great media coverage (Today Show, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, social media etc). Companies and foundations are sponsoring the program (e.g. Intel, Goldman Sachs, HP, Eisner Foundation etc). Come and learn how Encore Fellows benefit SVP and the communities we serve.

Leadership Development Using the EnneagramLocation: Capitol View Terrace South

Presenter: Monique Breault – Client Solutions Lead, CONVERSANT and Principal, 9types

The Enneagram is a powerful tool for personal and organizational transformation. Stemming from the Greek words ennea (nine) and grammos (a written symbol), the Enneagram symbol represents nine distinct strategies for relating to the self, to others and to the world. Each Enneagram type has a different pattern of thinking, feeling and acting that arises from a deep inner motivation and worldview. Our type helps describe how we meet work and life’s challenges and opportunities – including our work as leaders.

Understanding the Enneagram fosters greater understanding through a universal language that transcends gender, religion, nationality and culture. Determining our leadership style through the Enneagram does not put us in a box; instead, it helps us see the box from which we experience the world. With this awareness,

we can step outside of our limited perspective and appreciate other perspectives.

Learn about the strengths and development areas of each Enneagram type, and how you can use this knowledge to be an even more effective leader with SVP, its investees, and the broader community.

RAPID ROUNDRAPID ROUNDS – 2:55 PMNESsT and SVP: Collaboration in Latin America Location: Capitol View Terrace North

Presenters: Loïc Comolli – Co-Chief Executive Officer, NESsT; Santiago Mazzeo – Country Director, Argentina, NESsT

In recent years, Latin America has experienced considerable economic growth, leading to vast improvements in the quality of life of many people. In Brazil alone, poverty rates have decreased by half. Despite these advances, millions are still left behind. Inequality is one of the major social issues facing the region, reducing opportunities for vulnerable groups to lead better lives and participate in the global economy. For example, 50% of low-income youth are jobless and not in school. Education and environmental sustainability are other challenges to equitable growth.

Since 2000, NESsT works in Latin America to increase opportunities for vulnerable communities. To do that we invest in social enterprises using market-based solutions to create positive impact. We provide these social enterprises financial support, business mentoring, and networking opportunities to become self-sustainable and address social issues at scale.

NESsT and SVP are collaborating to establish the SVP model in Latin America for the first time. NESsT Partners will leverage NESsT’s established networks and SVP’s approach to move Latin America from charity to engaged philanthropy. In this Rapid Round you’ll hear about NESsT’s existing programs and the vision for a NESsT – SVP partnership, including how you and your colleagues can get involved.

Social Impact AcceleratorsLocation: Capitol Ballroom ABC

Presenter: Matt Kouri – Chief Executive Officer, Greenlights

Social entrepreneurs deserve the same access to financial and human capital that business entrepreneurs enjoy, and the Greenlights social impact Accelerator provides that access (and more) in a unique and innovative way. We take a heavily-vetted cohort of five nonprofits who are truly at an inflection point in their growth curve, each with proven impact models and a vision for scale, and we invest in them 1000+ hours of Partner and staff training, coaching, and consulting over several months. The Accelerator incorporates four full-day class sessions, customized business planning tools and templates, several pitch practices, and two formal pitch contests. The result is significant acceleration of and investment-ready business plans for all five nonprofits, and a single selected long-term investee with whom we are confident we will have success. Our model draws from proven practices

Willliam Eggers “The Solution Revolution”Location: Capitol Ballroom D & E

Where tough societal problems persist, citizens are crowd funding, ride-sharing, app-developing, impact-investing and the like to design lightweight solutions for seemingly intractable problems. No challenge is too daunting, from malaria in Africa to traffic congestion in California.

William Eggers is a leading authority on government reform. He is responsible for research and thought leadership for Deloitte’s Public Sector industry practice.

He is the author of eight books, including his newest, co-authored with Paul Macmillan, The Solution Revolution: How Business, Government, and Social Enterprises are Teaming up to Solve Society’s Biggest Problems (Harvard Business Press, September 2013). The book, which The Wall Street Journal calls “pulsating with new ideas about civic and business and philanthropic engagement,” was named to ten best books of the year lists.

His other books include the Washington Post best seller If We Can Put a Man on the Moon: Getting Big Things Done in Government (Harvard Business Press, 2009), Governing by Network (Brookings Institution Press, 2004), and The Public Innovator’s Playbook (Deloitte Research 2009). He coined the term Government 2.0 in a book of the same name.

His books have won numerous awards including the best books on policy, leadership and public services from The Guardian, 2014 Axiom award for best book on business theory, Louis Brownlow Award for best book on public management, the Sir Antony Fisher Memorial Award for best book promoting an understanding of the free economy, and the Roe Award for leadership and innovation in public policy research.

A former manager of the Texas Performance Review and appointee to the U.S. Office of Management and Budget’s Performance Assessment Rating Tool (PART) Advisory Board, Eggers has advised governments around the world. He gives close to 100 speeches a year and his commentary has appeared in dozens of major media outlets including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Guardian and the Chicago Tribune.

Strategic Philanthropy and Nonprofit Life StagesLocation: Capitol View Terrace South

Presenter: Kurt Peleman – Chief Executive Officer, European Venture Philanthropy Association

How is Venture Philanthropy adopting different methods and offering to reflect the different challenges organizations face as they move from incubator support to high scale? Can it be too soon to focus on performance measurement? Is there a moment when high engagement becomes too interfering? Can grants be a suboptimal financial instrument at a certain stage?

These are the questions we will explore in this session. At the European Venture Philanthropy Association, we consider it a crucial dimension of Venture Philanthropy to offer the right instruments at the right moment. But how it works is not yet fully understood. The consequences can be important - with as a worst case damaging the organisation you want to strengthen.

We guarantee that you will not walk out of this session with the ultimate answer. What we can promise, though, is a chance to inspire each other with real experiences – which we will then draw out on a VP- lifecycle map.

BREAKOUTBREAKOUTS – 11:00 AMThe Craft of ListeningLocation: Capitol Ballroom ABC

Presenter: Henry Berman – Chief Executive Officer, Exponent Philanthropy

Leaders require many talents and abilities to be successful. Many of the specific traits are likely debatable as they are often dependent on the person and the situation. Yet it is fair to say the ability to listen and listen actively and well, is critical to every leader. And while certain leadership skills are universal and transferable from the for-profit to non-profit worlds, many, such as listening, require fine-tuning.

Listening empowers leaders to gain knowledge and insight into issues as they listen for and develop smart ways to move in a positive direction. Listening also cultivates relationships, which are key to a group’s impact. As an individual partner and as part of a chapter, you are uniquely positioned to engage people and learn.

We are all in a position to lead. Whether it be an entire organization, your entire chapter, a small group of partners or grant recipients or even an audience of one, listening is critical to good leadership. Yet being a good listener is more than just hearing words. Active listening demands hearing as well as clarifying, verifying and evaluating information. Your ability to listen and hear is key to effective communications and in turn, your leadership. Explore why listening well is important and powerful as you sharpen – and practice - your ability to do so.

Learning the Hard Way: Understanding and Supporting Your Investee’s Financial Position and Practice Location: Capitol View Terrace North

Presenter: Mike Cadigan – Partner, SVP Seattle; Mike Quinn – Senior Manager – Capacity Building, SVP Seattle

Nonprofit finance does not often rise to the top of the priority list for an organization until a crisis hits. SVP Seattle has learned the hard way about the importance of focusing on nonprofit finance and having open and honest conversations with Investees about their true financial position.

Join us as we delve into some of the common challenges we have experienced with the SVP Seattle portfolio of investees. In this session we’ll explore the tools and teams we have developed to help us clarify an organization’s finances and have the honest conversations that strengthen our investees and make us more effective capacity builders.

Competitions, Open Innovation and Stakeholder EngagementLocation: Capitol Ballroom FGH

Presenter: Suzi Sosa – Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Verb

This session will explore how competitions, challenges and prizes can be used as powerful tools of social impact. It will provide examples of competitions that have mobilized multiple key stakeholders around an issue to work together to promote next-generation innovations.

For example, the LIVESTRONG Big C Challenge identified 735 social ventures from 30 countries that are using innovative techniques to improve the lives of people with cancer. The session will also review how competitions and open innovation can be useful to quickly, cheaply and efficiently identify opportunities for potential venture philanthropy investment.

THE POWER OF THE NETWORK

Social Venture Partners is a global network of local partners aligning passion and purpose. SVP helps individuals amplify their giving, funds and strengthens nonprofits

and equips our communities to tackle our greatest social challenges – together.

Each affiliate in the network is independent and unique to that community, yet we are connected together by a

shared vision to solve our most entrenched social problems. The SVP network is now 3,000+ people strong,

in 38 cities in the U.S., Australia, Canada, China, India, Japan, and Korea. Together, we have worked with more than

685 investees and contributed more than $53 million (USD) and hundreds of thousands of hours of skilled, strategic support.

Being part of this network means that we can make a greater impact collectively than we can alone. With shared

knowledge, tools, programs and services each affiliate can focus on their purpose and passion locally and can

leverage existing processes associated with organizational start up, day-to-day nonprofit management and program

development.

Whether your organization is in its first year – or you’ve been around for 17 years – the SVP Network Office exists to help you unlock your organization’s full potential.
