The National Constitution Center

will present its 2011 Liberty Medal

to former US Secretary of Defense

Dr. Robert M. Gates next month.

The ceremony will be held out-

doors on the Center’s front lawn

on Independence Mall. It is sched-

uled for Thursday, Sep. 22.

This year’s Liberty Medal honors

Dr. Gates’ five decades of service

to our nation – in uniform, as the

director of the CIA and as the

civilian head of America’s armed

forces. Throughout his distin-

guished career, Dr. Gates has

steadfastly defended freedom, pro-

moted effective diplomacy and

supported American troops. A

widely respected leader who earns

bipartisan support, he is the only

Secretary of Defense in US history

to serve Presidents of different par-

ties.

Dr. Gates helped transform US in-

telligence and military operations

to meet emerging realities and ad-

vocated for the safety and empow-

erment of American servicemen

and women, while forging partner-

ships at home and abroad based on

shared commitments to liberty.

National Constitution Center Pres-

ident and CEO David Eisner,

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Cor-

bett, and ABC News’ Bob

Woodruff will participate in the

ceremony. The event will be

broadcast live on WPVI-TV/6abc

and webcast live on www.6abc.com.

School District Expects To Fill Teaching

Positions SoonThe School District of Philadel-

phia is in the process of filling

1,335 teaching positions for the

upcoming school year.

Though the majority of these

positions will be filled through

the site selection and force

transfer process, the District this

week is contacting 325 teachers

who were laid off earlier this

summer and offering them

placement in schools. Over the

next couple of weeks, additional

teachers may be invited to re-

turn to positions in the School

District.

This process follows the collec-

tive-bargaining agreement pro-

viding teachers with the most

seniority within a subject area

priority in the re-hiring.

The District and school admin-

istrators continue to work to

have all schools fully staffed

and ready to educate students on

Sep. 6.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest Will Be Featured

At Press Conference Tomorrow

State Rep. Mike Vereb (R-Mont-

gomery) will hold a press confer-

ence on his Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Prevention legislation, HB1610.

SCA is the leading cause of death

in young athletes.

Vereb’s legislation ensures that ap-

propriate measures are taken when

a student athlete shows symptoms

of cardiac distress and will help to

identify health problems before it

is too late.

Vereb will be joined by Philadel-

phia Phillies trainer Scott Sheri-

dan; Darren Sudman, co-founder

and board member of Simon’s

Fund, a nonprofit organization

raising awareness of SCA; Dr.

Reginald Ho, clinical assistant pro-

fessor of cardiology at Thomas

Jefferson University; and Dr.

David Shipon, Simon’s Fund

board member and a practicing

cardiologist at Jefferson University

Hospital.

The conference is scheduled for 10

a.m. at Thomas Jefferson Univer-

sity’s Dorrance H. Hamilton

Building lobby, 1001 Locust

Street.

Forman Mills Is Back In

Business In W. Phila.State Rep. Jim Roebuck (D-W.

Phila), Democratic chairman of the

House of Representatives Educa-

tion Committee, returned to the

Forman Mills’ West Philadelphia

store at 48th & Market Streets to

congratulate the clothing retailer

on its renovated store, which is

next door to the brand new West

Philadelphia HS building.

Roebuck, who represents West

Philadelphia, was pleased to learn

Manager Tracee Murray and her

assistant Renee Cosom had each

been with the Forman Mills corpo-

ration for more than 10 years.

When Rick Forman, CEO of For-

man Mills, had met with Mayor

Michael Nutter a few weeks ago at

the discount-clothing warehouse

store, Nutter said he was not happy

with the Forman Mills bright-yel-

low painted exterior. So during the

renovation and expansion process,

Forman directed his staff to paint

the exterior of the store in a more

subdued color, to blend in with the

neighborhood. The signature

bright yellow is only used as an

accent color.

What had formerly been the ware-

house section of the block-square

building is now headquarters for

school uniforms, and there is an

outdoor parking lot for Forman

Mills customers.

In recent meetings with the

Philadelphia School District, For-

man Mills is now recognized as a

valued uniform destination for par-

ents and students. For students in

Philadelphia charter schools, the

“uniform” is a suit, and Forman

Mills supplies those as well.

Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell

had commented, “We certainly ap-

preciate Forman Mills and its com-

mitment to our West Philadelphia

neighborhood.”

Last week’s regional White House

Urban Entrepreneurship Forum at

Temple University must have had

Rick Forman in mind, as elected

official after elected official, in-

cluding Mayor Nutter, talked

about framing an optimistic mind-

set and finding the funding

streams, both governmental and

private, which are out there for en-

trepreneurs, even for first-time

businesses.

Roebuck had also visited the store

last Saturday at the start of Grand

Re-Opening festivities, according

to Marketing Director Valerie

Fiordaliso, when free hot dogs

were available with a clothing purchase, and Kendra

G from WPHI the Beat appeared in the late afternoon.

“My wife shops here all the time,” commented Roe-

buck, as he admired the renovations.

Forman Mills also opened a brand new store in Wilm-

ington, Del. last week, and several more new stores in

other states are set to open shortly.

In 1985, the first Forman Mills Factory Clothing

Warehouse superstore opened in an old warehouse in

South Philadelphia. What began as Rick Forman’s

simple fleamarket venture has grown into a nationally

respected brand with 28 stores in eight states and the

District of Columbia. And Forman Mills has become

known as the place to go for back-to-school items, es-

pecially for uniforms.
