Welcome to the Suleman Dawood School of Business of the Lahore University of Management Sciences. It is my pleasure to introduce the PhD Management Programme to you as a prospective candidate who wants to prepare for an academic career of scholarship and teaching in an insti-tution of higher learning. The focal point of the vision of the Business School and the University is of gaining a regional recognition for excellence in research. The school offers a research based doctoral degree program in management; this is in addition to our undergraduate programme in Accounting and Finance, flagship MBA Programme and the much sought after Executive MBA Programme.

We see PhD in Management to serve two basic requirements of the school. First, the programme will strengthen the research culture of the university. Second, the graduates of the programme will meet the needs of highly qualified scholars in academic institutions of higher learning in the country in the field of management. Our rigorous programme is in synch with the international standards and our doctoral graduates shall help in partially fulfilling the needs in research and academia all over the country.

The Business School is very fortunate to have a highly qualified faculty, trained at the top notch higher education institutions of the world. We believe our faculty is amongst the very best in the region and remains active in various avenues of research and scholarship. Our well established research centres provide them the requisite support to focus on rigorous research that is also largely relevant to South Asian Region.

The campus provides specially designed office space and work environment for PhD students for them to concentrate fully on the research and scholarship. Why academia at lums sdsb?The LUMS SDSB offers a PhD in management that is comparable to any doctoral programme offered by the top universities across the globe. The school offers a research based doctoral degree programme in management. The overall emphasis is on research based on originality. The students are expected to create, design, pursue and execute groundbreaking research work with all the freedom and tools that are required.

l Abdur Rahman Malik Was offered a fellowship

in John Molson School, Concordia University, Canada, funded by the Canadian government. He is working with Dr. Terri Lituchy, Associate Professor, (Concordia University). The title of the project is LEAD (Leadership Effectiveness in African Diaspora). This is a research project to investigate the leadership and motivational issues in African countries and the African Diaspora in US, Canada and the Caribbean.

l Muhammad Azeem Ali Shah

Authored a conference paper titled “The Effect of Technological Change on Working Relationships in Large Organisations.” It has been accepted at ICBME Conference, Bangkok, Thailand (January 2011).

l Ashar Saleem His research paper ‘An Institutional Explanation of Crossvergence was accepted by the Association of International Business (AIB), Conference held in San Diego, USA (24-30 June, 2009). His paper was co-authored with Dr. Mehdi Farashahi of Concordia University and made it to AIB’s prestigious conference proceedings.

l Muhammad Ayaz Co-authored a case with Dr. Kamran Ali Chatha. The case titled, ‘Production Options at Prime Safety Limited’ was accepted for publication in the Asian Journal of Management cases (7:55, 2010).

l Muhammad Shakeel Sadiq Jajja Co-authored a research paper with Dr. Shaukat Brah. The research paper titled, ‘Impact of Strategic Supply Chain Management on Organisational Performance’ has been accepted for oral presentation at the 40th Annual Meeting of Western Decision Sciences Institute to be held at Portland,(USA) (Conference Date: 5-8 April, 2011).

l Mohammad Kamran Mumtaz Authored a conference paper titled, ‘Integrated Location and Inventory Problem in a three–tier Supply Chain’. It was accepted at the PMAC Conference, Canada (2010).

l Faiza Muhammad Co-authored a case with Dr. Farzad Rafi Khan. The case titled, ‘HRM at Affluent Advertising (Pvt) Ltd’ was accepted for publication in the Asian Journal of Management Cases (7:177, 2010).

l Shoaib ul Haq Co-authored a book chapter with Dr. Mehdi Farashahi. The research was accepted for publication in Routledge’s (UK) upcoming volume ‘LOCAL vs. gLOBAL LOgIC: The Multinational Enterprise in Developing Countries’. This book was published in 2010.

The programme has been designed to ensure that doctoral students have the full range of necessary research and teaching competencies, skills and sufficient knowledge of their subject area. This skill set will assist them in designing and executing research at the highest standards of academic excellence. The programme aims to combine structured course work with supervised research study. The design has been made in line with international standards and HEC guidelines.

SDSB provides funding to PhD students in terms of scholarship and research assistantship. Additionally, after completion of course work PhD students are eligible to teach courses at undergraduate level. The University’s policy is to admit students purely on merit, regardless of their financial status or background. The PhD Management Programme offers a full tuition fee waiver to all students on merit, subject to the approval of Associate Dean - Academics. Other types of financial assistance will include a monthly assistance package up to PKR 30,000 so that the students devote themselves to fulltime studies without fiscal restraints. Teaching assistantships and stipends to support faculty in research projects are some of the other opportunities that may be available to doctoral students for additional financial assistance, subject to faculty approval.

If a student receives funding from another source, the said amount of fee waiver and/or scholarship allowance given by LUMS would be adjusted accordingly. Please note that the fee waiver and/or scholarship funding is approved initially for one year and is renewable based on academic performance. In the financial year 2010 - 11, more than PKR 5.75 million was given in financial assistance to PhD Management students.

Estimated annual expenses of books, cases and reading material are

approximately PKR 40,000.

The admission process at LUMS is competitive and transparent. Applications are assessed purely on the basis of merit.The basic requirements for applying to the PhD Programme in Management are as follows:

l A minimum of sixteen years of education result-ing in a Masters or Bachelors degree from an HEC recognised University

l gMAT/gRE/LMAT (LUMS Management Admission Test)

l Well thought out statement of research purpose. The PhD dissertation will require substantive em-pirical work and is intended to extend knowledge on a particular subject of interest to the manage-ment academic community
