European University InstituteThe European University Institute is one of the world’s leading academic institutions for postgraduate studies, specialising in the fields of law, history, economics and social and political science. It is located on the hills overlooking Florence, and stands out for its unique international character and strong European focus in teaching and research. It was founded in 1972 by the European Community Member States to provide advanced training to Ph.D. and LL.M. researchers and to promote research at the highest levels.

Ph.D. in LawThe Law Department offers a four-year degree leading to the award of a doctorate. Researchers participate in seminars on the basis of a structured programme of research and training during their first two years. A wide range of seminars and workshops is offered in key fields. Many of them are linked to current research projects in the Law Department, or are interdisciplinary and organised jointly with other departments in the Institute. Researchers submit their thesis by the end of the fourth year of their doctoral studies as the basis for the conferral of the Ph.D.

Doctoral researchers receive the Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree upon successful completion of the first year of the Ph.D. programme.

LL.M. in LawThe one-year LL.M. programme leads to the award of a Master in Comparative, European and International Laws. It is a research-based Master’s degree aimed at candidates who wish to advance their legal knowledge and their analytical skills in a stimulating international and interdisciplinary environment. LL.M. researchers, counselled and supervised by a professor in the department, participate in departmental seminars and courses along with the Ph.D. researchers. The LL.M. is awarded on the basis of a thesis to be submitted at the end of the year.

Application Procedures, Selection Criteria and GrantsFor admission, the primary consideration is academic qualification and excellence. Candidates should have a solid background in the appropriate theory and research methodology. The department’s capacity to supervise a candidate is also a key consideration. Candidates should have knowledge of at least two official languages of the EU.

The Law Department welcomes applications from Europe and elsewhere. Four-year grants for the Ph.D. programme are available for applicants from most EU Member States. A small number of grants are also reserved for applicants from non-EU Member States. LL.M. applicants must have their own funding for the entire period of study; a few small grants are offered each year by the EUI.
