    ASME

Accepts phased arrays specifically asComputerized Imaging Technology or

    CITs.

Need to have techniques and proceduresapproved

    Typically use Performance Demonstration

    approach.

    ASME Code Case 2235

Recent code case for using UT insteadof RT

Based on Performance Demonstration,(like ASME Section V Article 14)

Requires detecting three defects (ID,OD, sub-surface)

    Requires full data collection andencoder

Can fulfill with single linear pass

Often interpreted as TOFD, but can bepulse-echo or combination, or PA.

    Code activitiesS-scans

Realized limitations of single pass S-scans and ASME Code Case 2235

Published paper in MatEval in January

2005 on S-scan limitations, basedlargely on modeling

Showed limitations of S-scans,especially for thick walls

Generated several comments, mostlyfrom people who didnt read it properly!

S-scans for weldsCan calibrate S-scans at any angle on ASME SDH

S-scan does not necessarily give best angles for weld

    inspections, especially with single pass

Concept of bevel incident angle (BIA) on weld

    ASME cautionary paragraph

    Submitted cautionaryparagraph on S-scans

    to ASME

    Now in ASME CC

    2235-8/9

    Recommended

    against single S-scans

for walls >25 mm (1) Now superseded by

    upcoming PA code

    cases

    ASME PA code cases

Prepared phased array code cases forPAs

Single beam rastering, manual E- and S-

scans, encoded E-scans, and S-scans.PA group: Ed Ginzel (MRI), Mark Davis

(Davis NDE), Chris Magruder and MM

First code case approved (2541); manualS-scans and E-scans going through

    ASME.

Linear scanning code cases in progress.

    ASME Phased Array Appendix

Working Group recommended full ASMEMandatory Appendix for phased arrays:manual and encoded. Drafted.

Typically acceptance much slower than withcode case approach

Generic ASME procedure for welds now

    available.

    Code activities - API

Master plan with Davis NDE; has manyAPI-evaluated weld samples

Approach used API UT 1 and UT 2procedures with no changes

Essentially scan known samples usingnew technology/techniques

Trial in Dec 2005; went very well

Still waiting for official approval, butexpected

    Generic procedure almost available.

    Code activities - AWS

Demonstrated AWS D1:1 compliance thruAnnex K and Smith-Emery in LA

    A special; plan on publishing

Major problem: each case required theEngineers approval

Final solution: with 2006 version => newtechnology/technique approvals are codified

    Generic AWS procedure available.

Recommended practice for phasedarray set-up prepared by Ed Ginzel,

    MRI

Recently publishedWill require full angle corrected gain

    (ACG) over SDH calibration range

Also requires TCGLimits to angular range based on

    recommendations and calibration.

    From Insight

    Under proposed

    ASTM RP, this

    angular range is

    unlikely to be

    calibrate-able.

Relatively little PA code activity elsewhereNorth America leading due to push from

    Olympus NDT and associated companies

Europe: interest in PA qualifications, but noPA code work yet. EN1714 status unclear.

    ISO: No significant activity yet

Japan: Appendix for PA use in crack sizing, otherwise limited.

    Code activitiessummary (1)

    Phased arrays inherently accepted byASME

But, may need to get techniques andprocedures approved via Performance

Demonstration approaches (ASME Section V Article 14 good

    approach for approvals with PerformanceDemonstration)

    Code Cases in progress

Ultimately, will codify in new MandatoryAppendix.
