What is Pharmacogenetics? Pharmacogenetics is the study of how genes affect the body's response to certain medicines. Testing discovers genetic variants to determine types of medications and dosages for effective treatment, or that could cause side effects. These variants occur in genes that code for drug-metabolizing enzymes, drug targets, or proteins involved in immune response. Pharmacogenetics can determine specific variants which impact an individuals response to a drug. Personalized Approach Understand how your genes affect your response to certain medications. Everyone responds differently to medications. What works for someone else, may not work for you. Why? Your genetic makeup is different. Some of the genes you have can contribute to unwanted side effects and allow your body to metabolize medications at a different rate. So take a simple test identifying which specific medications work best with your genetic makeup, and eliminate trial and error. -G[ $GPGƓVU Results provide relevant info to make more informative decisions Focuses on more personalized care Decreases healthcare costs and improves outcomes Can predict how a patient may respond to drug therapy based on DNA Indications for Test Someone that is going to take, or is taking, a drug that has an accepted pharmacogenetic test associated with it Anyone taking major medications during pregnancy • Polypharmacy Anyone that is nervous about taking medications Anyone experiencing an adverse reaction or has a history of adverse reactions to medications Trouble establishing or maintaining a therapeutic dose A DIVISION OF CMCD Ready to Take the Next Step? What is Pharmacogenetics?Pharmacogenetics is the study of how genes affect the body's response to certain medicines.
