!A Winters tale: Last Orders (time please, gentlemen) !The!Case!Is!Altered!was!a!village!pub!which!had!shut!down!in!around!2001.!A!handsome!symmetrical!building,!not!that!old,!early!1900s,!which!replaced!the!original!thatched!pub!before!it,!that!had!burned!down.!Dave!and!his!school!friends!used!to!frequent!the!pub!in!the!late!1980s!when!in!the!sixth!form.!It!was!lively!back!then,!with!pool!teams,!a!stoked!up!vinyl!jukebox,!and!testosteroned!youths!donutting!mopeds!or!Ford!Fiestas!round!the!car!park,!while!the!elder!statesmen!would!support!the!bar,!systematically!drinking!watery!bitter,!broadcasting!tall!stories!to!anyone!in!their!radius.!Like!many!villages,!3!or!4!pubs!boiled!down,!to!the!last!pub!standing,!now!the!Bluebell!just!up!the!road,!with!its!high!end!olives!&!piped!atmosphere.!Character!was!lacking,!this!was!still!being!developed!at!the!chain!brewery!boardroom.!!Dave!had!moved!back!into!the!village!after!living!in!town!and!London!for!a!bit,!but!the!circle!of!life!had!brought!him!back!to!his!roots.!Most!days!he'd!walk!Arthur!the!terrier!

round!the!block!and!!pass!the!pub,!daydreaming!about!its!future.!Maybe!a!micropub,!with!beer!brewed!on!the!premises,!with!hops!in!the!garden!and!complimentary!cheese!on!toast!at!closing!time.!It!had!been!empty!too!long,!no!one!knew!who!owned!it,!which!was!a!bit!odd!in!a!village!where!most!things!were!known!and!Chinese!whispered!around.!Developers!were!mooted.!!One!day!with!the!dog,!Dave!noticed!the!back!gate!to!the!pub!open,!like!a!rat!to!crab!paste,!he!couldn't!resist.!Walking!round!the!corner!the!back!door!to!the!pub!was!there,!out!of!view!from!the!road.!!Navigating!the!budhlia!in!the!doorway,!he!tried!the!door.!It!was!undone!!His!pulse!was!rising!and!he!sheepishly!called!out!!hello...!Hello?!The!coast!was!clear.!Did!curiosity!kill!the!cat?!Or!Man!with!dog?!in!the!pub!it!was!as!he!remembered,!minus!furniture.!This!was!great!but!a!bit!nerve!wracking,!so!he!left.!!Later!on!he!texted!his!mate!Ritchie,!telling!him!all!about!it.!Next!thing!they!plotted!to!go!back!together.!Safety!in!numbers!and!all!that.!Next!week!Dave!and!Ritchie!ventured!back!to!the!pub,!armed!with!cameras!to!take!'arty'!shots.!!There!was!a!faint!smell!of!cigarettes!this!time!that!they!confirmed!to!each!other.!Not!quite!as!elusive!as!pipe!smoke!but!oddly!quite!pleasant!at!the!same!time.!Maybe!someone!had!snooped!in!like!them!beforehand.!More!adventurous!this!time,!Dave!suggested!going!behind!the!bar!area,!which!was!disappointingly!empty.!There!was!a!door,!leading!to!a!small!hall!with!stairs!and!another!door.!They!peeked!through!the!door.!"The!cellar"!Ritchie!exclaimed!and!they!glanced!at!each!other,!confirming!their!strange!urge!to!go!down!there.!The!stairs!were!a!lot!older!than!the!rest!of!the!building,!steep,!whitewashed!and!narrow.!Down!in!the!cellar!with!our!headlamps,!we!observed!half!a!crate!of!Britvic!fruit!juice,!circa!1980!with!mouldy!lids,!a!KP!nut!card!with!an!unsavoury!lady!on!it,!cavorting!her!wares.!Then,!under!a!skeletal!pigeon,!some!old!cut!glass!soda!syphons,!some!with!now!flat!still!soda!within.!Then!Ritchie!juddered!massively!\!did!you!hear!that?!No!replied!Dave.!I!just!heard!a!voice!Ritchie!was!back!up!the!stairs!post!haste!and!Dave!swiftly!followed.!"Shall!we!go!up!the!Bluebell!now?"!"oh!yes!"!They!convalesced!over!a!best!bitter!and!plotted!their!next!visit!back...!!The!third!visit!would!prove!to!be!the!most!memorable.!Dave!&!Ritchie!returned!at!dusk!on!a!warm!summers!evening.!"Ritchie,!check!these!out"!Dave!had!found!a!pile!of!mix!tapes!tucked!up!on!a!shelf.!A!click!echoed!in!the!air.!!

The!lads!stopped!in!their!tracks!and!looked!at!each!other,!click!click,!again.!"It's!dominoes"!mumbled!Ritchie.!A!scuffling!noise!confirmed!this!\!dominoes!shuffling!on!a!table.!Soon!after!that!a!distant!waft!of!piano!music!could!be!heard!in!the!room!fading!in!and!out,!like!the!tide.!It!stopped.!Then!an!echoey!piece!of!guitar!music!drifted!it,!on!closer!listening!it!revealed!itself!to!be!'Lithium'!by!Nirvana!\!a!tune!that!the!lads!would!have!heard!at!the!time!they!used!to!frequent!the!pub.!Although!completely!freaked!out,!Dave!&!Ritchie!felt!compelled!to!stay!put.!Not!frozen!with!fear!but!curious!and!almost!spellbound.!"Dave....look!behind!the!bar"!What?!Replied!Ritchie.!"Can't!you!see!that!man?"!"no!"!hissed!Dave,!almost!hysterically.!"He's!got!great!big!mutton!chops!and!he's!clutching!a!clay!pipe!in!his!teeth...he's!talking!to!himself".!Just!then!The!piano!sound!drifted!back!in!and!directed!Daves!eyes!to!a!piano...with!pianist.!"Er,!can!you!see!that!Ritchie?"!!"Er,!yes!I!can"!mumbled!Ritchie.!Slowly!figures!were!appearing!and!disappearing,!a!bit!like!holograms,!in!different!shades!of!light!blue.!Different!figures!from!different!times!presented!themselves;!a!mulleted!youth!in!a!bomber!jacket,!clicking!pool!balls!around,!then!a!bald!figure!holding!court!at!the!bar,!sloshing!a!gin!around.!Hazey!blue!flames!began!to!flicker!in!the!fireplace.!The!sounds!and!figures!fazed!in!and!out,!conflicting!with!each!other,!building!up!like!some!kind!of!spectral!symphony.!It!surrounded!Dave!&!Ritchie,!they!couldn't!really!do!a!lot!or!knew!what!to!do,!so!they!looked!on,!21st!century!voyeurs,!watching!decades!of!evenings!past,!as!if!layered!in!a!giant!flower!press.!After!it!came!to!a!busy,!noisy,!heavily!scented!pinnacle!it!wound!down!rapidly,!ending!with!a!single!domino!spinning!on!the!fatigued!wooden!floor.!Ritchie!&!Dave!sloped!out!of!the!pub!staring,!on!auto!pilot!now!to!the!Bluebell!for!a!post!freak!out!analysis!and!pint.!They!decided!not!to!tell!anyoneWhod!believe!them?!!The!pub!soon!after!displayed!a!'for!sale'!sign.!!Where!did!that!come!from?!Who!was!selling!it?!When!Dave!was!walking!Arthur!he!saw!it!and!said!to!himself!"I'll!have!that!pub!one!day".!
