It is time to begin planning for 2021 so it is important for us to know soon who will be here in the new year. Our prep positions are filling quickly, so if you know anyone who is in our catchment area but who has not yet enrolled their prep child for next year, please let them know that now is the time to confirm the enrolment. At this stage, it is unlikely that we will be taking many students from our waiting list from outside of catchment. This applies to prep and the rest of the school. Of course, we do take all students from the catchment whose parents wish to enrol here. Furthermore, we make provision to enrol students who have a sibling currently attending. Children of staff members are also able to be enrolled along with students who are subject to various court orders. Students with disabilities may also enrol if Holland Park is the nearest school coded for their relevant disability. The possibility of vacancies does exist depending on how many presently enrolled students will be leaving at the end of the year. Traditionally, a number of parents take up enrolment offers at private schools which sometimes has an impact on our enrolments in the upper year levels. If your child will be leaving at the end of the year, to attend another primary school, it would be enormously appreciated if you could let Karen Oliver (email: [email protected] know about that as soon as you can please. While I get reasonably reliable answers from the older students to the question, Will you be at Holland Park next year?”, infor- mation from our very young stu- dents can be a little less reliable. Graduation 2020 I know that our year 6 graduation is very much one of the most special events that we have on the calendar. I discussed with the P&C at this meeting what this years graduation may look like. Of course December is a long time away in these times and we will need to be flexible in how we plan to present the celebration. Our first preference will be to have a plan that will enable the celebration to happen so that the whole cohort of Year 6s can gather together with their parents on site at school. If this option is available to us at the time, then it will be an outdoor ceremony so as to allow the social distancing that will still be required. However, I will need to follow the conditions of the time which might mean smaller gatherings with one or two classes at a time with their parents or perhaps having all the students together with parents following a live stream of the event Anthony Gribbin Principal Creative Dance Wk 3-10 HPSS Asia Week Wk 10 SCHOOL WATCH School Calendar Holland Park State School Message from our Principal Ph: (07) 3421 6222 Student Absences: (07) 3421 6260 Email: [email protected] 28 August 2020 RULE REMINDER Staying safe in play areas; Stay within play boundaries Take turns on play equipment Keep away from the oval shed 5C WEEKLY TIP COURTESY Remember your manners; Use please & thank- you manners Use Good morning& ‘Good afternoongreetings Make eye contact & smile at others Active School Travel will not recommence this term. At home, with your child, we encourage you to -

• Talk about the ‘maths’ in situations with your child.

• Ask them to ‘figure’ some maths in their heads.

• Ask them to figure different ways to solve things mathematically.

• Love maths and not give up on tricky problems.

Creative Dance We are now well underway with dance instruction at Holland Park. The years prep, 1 ,4 and 6 are receiving the full program whilst remaining grades are involved in a four-week schedule. Dance is assessed across a ‘two year banded Arts’ timeline. The program is aligned to the Australian Curriculum and involves a wide range of skills, themes, styles and routines. As the term nears week 8, only students in the full program will be assessed. Watching our students participate in the program is most rewarding as most seem to enjoy some level a high level of engagement in the program.

Curriculum- Mathematics As you are aware, we have a key school program at Holland Park that targets Daily Maths Routines. This focus is designed to help build a range of mathematical skills particularly in the area of Number Sense and Number Fluency. The mathematics most we used as adults is mental computation. “Mental computation is the mental processes that an individual undertakes in order to achieve a mathematical answer or outcome.” This does not mean that all of this work must be done in the ‘head’. Some of us like to jot or draw ideas and possibilities as we think mathematically. It does mean though that there are times when it is good to try to work things out without pen and paper. The other critical aspect of Daily Maths Routines is ‘student discourse’. Discourse gives students’ a chance to ‘sound out’ their ideas before announcing them to a larger or whole group. This aids confidence and perseverance in maths.

1. Six business people meet for lunch and shake hands with each other. How many handshakes are there?

2. Here’s a subtraction problem. The numbers a and b stand for digits. If the two subtraction sums give the same answer, what digits do a and b stand for?

3. Triangular numbers are made by forming triangular patterns with counters.

Hannah has made the first four triangular numbers with blue counters.

Hannah didn’t think that the first triangular number really looked like a triangle but it seemed a good place for the pattern to start. The first triangular number is made with just one counter and so is one. The second triangular number is 3. The 3rd triangular number is 6 and the 4th triangular number is 10. What is the 10th triangular number? What is the 20th triangular number?

Koala Spotting in Prep Playground

There was much excitement in the Prep playground on Wednesday when a koala was spotted in the gum tree located near Wilbur Street just inside the school grounds. Teachers and students kept a close eye on the sleepy marsupial all day as he slept on a branch high

up in the tree, which is a feeding tree for koalas. Spotting a koala in our own school was a rare occurrence and certainly reinforced the importance of preserving the few gum trees that remain in the local area. One of our parents, Jean Friend, who is a volunteer for the Queensland Koala Society provided some advice and sign for the tree to alert everyone about its presence. Later that evening volunteers from the Queensland Koala Society were able to secure him and he spent the night under observation at the rehabilitation center. Latest News Flash about “Julius”

the Koala

On Thursday afternoon we received an update about our precious koala, named “Julius” from Jean Friend, the koala rescue volunteer. He has had a health assessment at Australian Zoo Wildlife Hospital in Beerwah and given the all clear. Julius will be released in his home range in a safe habitat this afternoon.

Year Two Junior Historians Last week our year 2 students became junior historians as they searched to unlock the secrets of the past during their excursion to Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island). The day program called, Small Town, BIG History, immersed students in the role as history detectives. Their mission was to explore, uncover and report on the history and significant sites of Dunwich, including One Mile, Polka Point, the Quarantine Station and Dunwich Benevolent Asylum. Just like real historians, they interrogated sources such as historic sites, photographs, artefacts and an Indigenous cultural presentation by a local Quandamooka person. This unique and hands-on learning experience has contributed a great deal of value to the study of history and has further ignited the interest of students in learning about the history. Message from our Head of Curriculum Cont’d

Jean’s message: “We named the koala Julius. We thought since Holland Park State School is on land once owned by the late Julius Holland, it is fitting and it might be of some history interest to the students at Holland Park State School!!

We have been extremely busy responding to koalas finding themselves in sticky situations. It's breeding season and young males are looking for territory to call their own. This is the time when joeys are emerging from mum pouches and mums are trying to find safe areas for their young.

How you can help: Also, we are very excited that our founder, Angela Christodoulou has been nominated as a finalist for Westfield Carindale Local Hero!! Voting will determine who wins a grant of $10,000 for their cause. We are a volunteer based group. We pay for our own traning, equipment, fuel for transport and for all the costs related for wildlife in care. That money could really help us!! Could you share the voting link: https://localhero.qks.org.au”

The Queensland Koala Society is a non-profit organisation with dedicated volunteers for koala rescue and rehabilitation focusing on south-east Brisbane, Queensland, koalas. Please support them by voting on the link above and call the hotline if you spot a koala that needs rescuing. An important message from our dedicated carers is that local koalas have a better chance by responding quickly to them quickly.

This is the peak award for the cubs section, before they graduate to the scouts section. Victor Scouts adjoins the school at the rear Victor street entrance, with many kids from our school also going there. Recently they invited Anthony Gribbin and local state member Joe Kelly to celebrate their newest Grey Wolf members and the renovations of the grounds and hall. Cambodia Club Students that form the Cambodia Club have been involved in the Containers for Change program that has been initiated at school. Each week we collect and sort containers ready for refund at the Tomra collection centre. Students had the amazing opportunity to visit the Tomra recycle centre at West End. The story of our recycling campaign has impressed Tomra and they have recently negotiated Holland Park State School to be a donation partner. You now have the choice to donate your 10c

container to HPSS at the Tomra Recycle Centre located at Salisbury. Choose HPSS and donate towards educating sustainable practises and supporting our partnership with Santhormok Primary School, Phnom Penh. We look forward to your support!

Cambodia Corner garden Thank you to our families, teachers and staff for the amazing contributions to the Cambodia Corner garden. The garden is really taking shape and has turned a small part of our school into a very pleasant looking area. We have some small tasks to complete and we are hoping that the garden will be completed by the end of the term. It has been fabulous to have collaboration at a whole school level for this project.
