PGP/MIME. A newer, standards based format for PGP-encrypted messages. Partitioned. An older format for PGP-encrypted messages that comes in two

flavors, text/plain and text/HTML.When you receive encrypted PGP/MIME and Partitioned text/HTML messages, you willsee attachments in your iOS device's email app instead of readable text as you normallywould. 14 Using PGP Viewer for iOSMessages

Opening PGP/MIME and Partitioned text/HTML Messages

When you receive encrypted PGP/MIME and Partitioned text/HTML messages, you willsee attachments in your iOS device's email app instead of readable text. Opening theattachments using PGP Viewer for iOS displays the decrypted message content.

These are not attachments in the usual sense; that is, they are not filesattached to the text of the message. Instead, they are the text of the message in anattachment.

With PGP/MIME messages, there will be two "attachments" near the top of themessage, Version.txt and Message.pgp. You can ignore Version.txt.

With Partitioned text/HTML messages, the "attachment", called PGPexch.htm.pgp

To open PGP/MIME and Partitioned text/HTML messages:

Open the email app on your iOS device. Select the message you want to read. Tap the attachment called Message.pgp (for a PGP/MIME message) or the

attachment with a filename of PGPexch.htm.pgp or PGPexch.rtf.pgp (for aPartitioned text/HTML message).

Select Open in "PGP Viewer for iOS" when this text appears.PGP Viewer for iOS will open, decrypt the message, verify the signature (ifenabled), and then display the message.

Opening Partitioned text/plain MessagesWhen you receive a Partitioned text/plain message, you will see encrypted text whereyou would normally see the body of the message. To read the message, you must selectthe encrypted text, copy it, and open PGP Viewer for iOS, which will decrypt it anddisplay the message.

    To open Partitioned text/plain messages:

Open the email app on your iOS device. Select the Partitioned text/plain message you want to read. Select just the encrypted text, starting with ----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE---- and

ending with -----END PGP MESSAGE----, and copy it.

Open PGP Viewer for iOS.PGP Viewer for iOS will open, decrypt the message on the clipboard, verify thesignature (if enabled), and then display the message.

    17/21

Using PGP Viewer for iOSAbout Attachments

    15

    Replying to Messages

PGP Viewer for iOS does not send email messages nor does it encrypt data in thisrelease. You cannot use PGP Viewer for iOS to reply to messages you decrypt.

You can, however, reply to messages using your iOS device's email client. PGP/MIMEand Partitioned text/HTML will show the old attachments in the reply but no encryptedor decrypted text. Partitioned text/plain will show the encrypted text in the reply.

If you require that the original encrypted text be present in the reply in readable form(decrypted), copy the decrypted text from PGP Viewer for iOS and paste it into thereply.

If you include the decrypted text in a reply, the message will go outunencrypted. If it is intercepted in transit, it will not be protected. Consider whetherthis would violate your organization's security policy. If so, perhaps you should waituntil you can send an encrypted reply.

About AttachmentsWhen an encrypted message with an attachment is sent to you, both the body of themessage and the attachment are encrypted. When the message is decrypted by PGPViewer for iOS, the attachment is also decrypted.

While PGP Viewer for iOS can decrypt an attachment, it may not be usable onyour iOS device, depending on what kind of file it is.

There are two kinds of "attachments" that impact your encrypted messages on PGP

    Viewer for iOS:

"actual" attachments. These are files that are attached to an email message. Whenencryption is not involved, these are the only kind of attachments associated withemail messages.

"body" attachments. These files are created in the encryption process. Theircontent is the body of the encrypted message, nota separate file attached to anemail message. These attachments are needed so that none of the binary contentof these messages is lost in the encryption/decryption process.

PGP Viewer for iOS handles both actual and body attachments based on the format ofthe message:

PGP/MIME messages always display at least two attachments when viewed on aniOS device: Version.txt and Message.pgp. Version.txt includes no useful

information. The encrypted body of the PGP/MIME message is stored inMessage.pgp. Any actual attachments to the message do not display untilMessage.pgp is decrypted, at which point they can be accessed through theAttachments Toolbar icon in PGP Viewer for iOS.

  • 7/31/2019 PgpViewer iOS 100 Usersguide En

    18/21

16 Using PGP Viewer for iOSAbout Attachments

Partitioned text/plain messages always display encrypted text in the body of themessage. Partitioned text/plain messages have no bodyattachments. Any actualattachments are shown belowthe encrypted text and can be opened independently

of the encrypted body of the message. Actual attachments are named"Attachment1.pgp", "Attachment2.pgp", and so on. To decrypt the body ofPartitioned text/plain messages, you must copy the encrypted text to the clipboardand then open PGP Viewer for iOS.

Partitioned text/HTML messages are similar to Partitioned text/plain messagesin that encrypted text is shown in the body of the message and actual attachmentsare shown at the end of the message and are named "Attachment1.pgp","Attachment2.pgp", and so on. However, the body of the message is also in a bodyattachment at the end of the message and can be opened without copying it to theclipboard (it can, however, also be opened by copying it to the clipboard). The bodyattachments of Partitioned text/HTML messages will be named eitherPGPexch.htm.pgp or PGPexch.rtf.pgp.

The easiest way to determine if an attachment to an encrypted message is an actualattachment or a body attachment is to look at its filename. If it stars with "Attachment",

then it is an actual attachment.

See Opening Attachments (on page 16).

    Opening Attachments

To open an attachment to a PGP/MIME encrypted message:

Open the message using PGP Viewer for iOS. The message will be decrypted andthen displayed.

    On the PGP Viewer for iOS toolbar, tap Attachments.PGP Viewer for iOS displays a number in a circle on the Attachments icon;

the number shown indicates how many attachments are attached to the message.

The filenames of the attachments display.

Tap the name of the attachment to see what options are available for opening it onyour iOS device.

To open an attachment to a Partitioned message:

Open the message in your email app. Move to the bottom of the message and look for the attachments. They will be

named "Attachment1.pgp", "Attachment2.pgp", and so on. If you are opening anattachment to a Partitioned text/HTML message, be sure to select an actual

attachment and not the body of the message in an attachment. Tap the attachment, then select Open in "PGP Viewer for iOS" when this textappears. PGP Viewer for iOS opens, decrypts the attachment, and displays theAttachments screen.

Tap the name of the attachment to see what options are available for opening it onyour iOS device.

    Using PGP Viewer for iOSSignatures

    17

SignaturesPGP Viewer for iOS can check the validity of (verify) the signatures of PGP-encryptedmessages you receive that have been signed.

By default, signature verification is on. You can turn off signature verification, whichcan speed up the display of decrypted messages, in the Settings.

    Signature verification shows:

The date and time the message was signed. The name and email address on the key that signed the message. The key ID of the key that signed the message. The encoding format of the key at the time the message was signed. If the message
