“The essential spring of all

you can get from without is

some food - material or

What is really essential in your

yourself.”

Hon. Dean

Dean’s Desk

Dear Recruiters,

Greetings from S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research!

We at SPJIMR focus on developing a mind set for systematic thinking and providing socially

responsive attitude in education for management practices. Bearing this in mind we have

successfully developed PGPM, full time one year program for experienced professionals.

The PGPM program is for participants who are at their mid career level and would leverage

the opportunity by being a part of the mission of SPJIMR. The program gives the

opportunity to customize their studies in core functions of management. Rigorous academic

curriculum, customization, unique pedagogy, industry interactions are the pillars of PGPM

and these pillars strengthen participants for the challenges in the corporate world.

We have introduced Finance and Marketing specialisation this year along with already existing

Operations and Information Management specialisation. The course caters to specific

industry requirements as it combines domain focus expertise with general management

perspective. Domain specialisation and role customization gives participants a combination

of holistic and integrated approach towards management and leadership.

We transform participants into future leaders with the mission and vision to be a net

contributor to the society at large. We create and nurture value based growth in the

participants with our innovative pedagogy approaches such as Development of Corporate

Citizenship and Application of Learning Program. We not only create good administrative

managers but also focus on various areas of personality development of participants. This

helps the participant to develop into a versatile individual, who has the right mix of

knowledge, skill and attitude.

The class of 2010 is a batch of thoughtful and responsible individuals who share with them

the mission of SPJIMR of 'Influencing practice' and 'Promoting Value Based Growth'.

We are looking forward to a continued positive response from the business community to our

programmes and plans as in the past.

Page 4: pgpm2010_brochure

Our Mission

We recognise our twin roles – as a responsible member of Bharatiya Vidya

Bhavan and as a responsive member of Indian society at large – and look at

ourselves in a wider context as a 'Beyond MBA' institution. We aspire to be a

globally recognised institute with concurrent presence in socially relevant

segments of Indian society.

We emphasize 'Influencing practice' and 'Promoting value-based growth', which

remain the guiding posts for planning and execution in all that we do.

In all our endeavours, we emphasize (i) attitudes and skills as much as knowledge,

(ii) indigenous learner-centric pedagogy, and (iii) global best practices. Our

attempt is to synthesize the apparent contradictions between western efficiency

and eastern ethos, and competition and collaboration. We believe this could be a

global model one day.

As a self-reliant institution, we seek operational freedom and encourage an

entrepreneurial, agile and flexible organizational culture working on a

collaborative pursuit of innovative solutions.

SPJIMR community strives to realize the objectives of the institution through

self-accountability, professional discipline and hard work.

Page 5: pgpm2010_brochure

One of the visible changes taking place in the MBA education across the world

is the growing popularity of the one year post graduate programme with a

global outlook. With economy getting back on the growth track, there is a

growing need for suitable people for Senior Managerial positions. SPJIMR in

line with its mission of promoting value based growth has designed the

PGPM programme, which is a 11 month intensive residential programme, to

meet this demand.

SPJIMR identifies potential managers with more than 5 years experience,

provide value addition in terms of functional expertise, entrepreneurial

acumen, service orientation and general management perspective so that they

are better equipped to take leadership roles.

We are confident that corporates will find good number of promising

participants from PGPM 2009-2010 batch, to take Senior Management

positions and contribute to the organization and society.

Dr. Sesha Iyer

About SPJIMR

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's

is one of the

premier business schools in the country. Since its inauguration

in 1981 by then British Prime Minister Rt. Hon'ble Margaret

Thatcher, it has been consistently recognized as one of the top 10 management institutes in the country, by the

virtue of its innovative pedagogic approach and ability to adapt to the changing business requirements.

Management education has to adopt a leadership role in India. This entails examining actual business practices to

influence them. The curriculum acts like a melting pot of ideas so that through a process of self-examination, the

beneficiaries are encouraged to examine all the tangible and intangible factors that determine the situation and

assess the relevance of these before arriving at mature judgement. All initiatives and innovations at SPJIMR aim

to influence industry practices and hence be a participant in re-shaping the nation's destiny.

With the world order moving towards greater interdependence of material and regional economies, individuals

need to build a right blend between concern for own welfare and the social good. SPJIMR encourages

development of co-operative outlook that recognizes the value of sharing and mutual respect. The emphasis is

thus on social responsiveness and utility of cooperation with competition, giving rise to collaborative leadership.

The curriculum and the learning experience provided to participants aims to imbibe awareness of values, the

need to inculcate them and hence create a desire for authenticity and sincerity, which are above the material

prosperity.

SPJIMR offers two-year full time PGDM programme, 11-month full time PGPM programme, 18-month Family

Managed Business programme and 21-month Post Graduate Executive Management programme.

for character and attitude building, developing a mind-set for holistic thinking and

recognizing skills for administration, in addition to the conventional inputs towards development of analytic,

rational skills. To achieve the same, SPJIMR has evolved combination of both classroom and beyond classroom

pedagogic innovations.

to develop empathic, and non-self centred leaders.

in all our processes and operations.

and to be able to respond to dynamic marketplace.

Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM) is an

eleven month, full-time, residential programme. The

mission of the programme is to create and nurture value-

based future leaders taking on higher management roles in

transforming organizations.

SPJIMR perceived the need of the industry for thought

leaders in middle level management and successfully

endeavoured to create the PGPM course. The programme

which is in its sixth year, has challenged the paradigm of

conventional part time courses for working executives.

The unique aspect of the programme is the focus

on the Role and Domain that the participant is interested

to pursue. The customized approach ensures:

A) Contextually specific role and domain focus

B) Functionally integrated teaching-learning process

The course caters to specific industry requirements as it

combines domain focused expertise with a general

management perspective.

The programme has a unique model of combining the Six

Week ALP (Application of Learning Programme) with a

comprehensive research paper which gives the participant

a holistic approach towards contemporary business

environment.

The rapid growth of business has thrown open the need

for a very large number of middle level and senior level

management professionals in most companies. They are

required to have a general management perspective with

focused domain expertise on the businesses they serve.

The current demand for such professionals is expected to

far exceed the availability. Internal promotions within the

specific

Positioning and Philosophy

Industry Need

organization alone will not be sufficient to feed this

demand.

The PGPM programme is best suited for working

professionals to add value to their careers in a short time. It

provides a great opportunity to those participants who

want to rejoin the industry quickly at higher

remunerations. The programme is rigorous, challenging

and intense. The programme encourages learning beyond

classroom discussions and the intense process prepares

participants to analyze situations quickly and apply skills to

real business situations. One learns to combine industry

expertise with the fundamentals of management that one

is exposed to over the year. Successful leaders and

entrepreneurs regularly visit the campus to provide their

perspectives on the ever-changing dynamics of the

industry.

SPJIMR is not affiliated to any university and is completely

autonomous. This status has given the institute the ability

to utilize academic freedom to develop trend-setting

educational programmes and pedagogic processes with

long-term benefits for all stakeholders. SPJIMR also has

entrepreneurial agility that has made it the only self-

financed institute to be among the top ten in the country.

The guiding philosophy of SPJIMR is influencing

practice, here and now, and promoting value based

growth. The Institute has an enviable track record of

recognizing the needs of the society and quickly and aptly

responding by offering high quality relevant programmes.

And, to cap it all, SPJIMR has the advantage of being in

Mumbai, the commercial capital of the country.

Leadership through Character Building

If 'learning' were directly proportional to 'teaching , the task of management teachers would be easy. True learning requires

creativity, innovation and application. SPJIMR has incorporated experiential and beyond classroom learning approach to

weave its pedagogic innovations, leadership development, character building and industry integration.

Social Projects

 Institute provides an opportunity for

PGPM participants to apply their

managerial skills in undermanaged sectors by means

of DOCC projects.

Working with NGOs in rural settings helps

participants appreciate the need for contributing to

the society and the universality of management

principles in an undermanaged sector.

Experiencing the hardships of living makes them a

more balanced personality and sensitizes them to

heterogeneous Indian society.

The inputs provided through these projects not only

benefits the organization involved but also the

beneficiaries of that social programme.

Assessment and Development ofManagerial and AdministrativePotential

ADMAP represents a value added approach to

management education and attempts to formalize a

system for self managed development of

administrative skills.

The ADMAP aims to permit self-assessment on

certain key managerial skills, strengthen and develop

potential strengths and acquire the other key skills

through ongoing formal mechanism of planning,

review and development.

ADMAP course involves theoretical inputs on

administration, projects, learning through movies

and plays, workshops and diary based learning.

Gita Shibir

Participants attend a two day 'shibir'

with Swami Viditatmanandaji (a disciple

of Swami Dayananda Saraswati) on meditation,

discourses and interactive sessions.

During these sessions, participants raise issues, clarify

doubts and contribute with their own spiritual

experiences.

Swamiji explains the concept of 'dharma' and how it

is applicable in our daily lives and also the corporate

world. He also enlightens the participants on Indian

philosophy of life and importance of values in self-

growth.

Personal Growth Lab

PG Lab is an experiential pedagogy

used as a part of People and

Performance course. The exercise is conducted at

for enhanced experience and learning.

The objective of PG Lab is to help participants

acquire a deeper understanding of themselves, their

behaviour and interpersonal relationships.

The lab aims to inculcate among participants, critical

interpersonal and team skills through team building

games and experiential exercises.

Participants are required to prepare a Personal

Development Plan to leverage on individual

strengths and work on developmental areas, which is

monitored over time.

Application of Learning Programme (ALP) is a corporate internship project undertaken by participants of the PGPM

programme at the end of their course. It is conceptualized to help participants relate theories of management to actual

issues and challenges that exist in the industry. ALP provides a unique opportunity to participants where they work closely

with the industry, solving real-time problems and getting a new perspective on businesses. The programme lasts for six to

eight weeks and exposes the participants not only to business cases but also organization culture and people from various

backgrounds.

ALP promotes the integration of concepts learnt by participants in the foundation, general management and

customization modules and encourages them to apply skills of consulting and business intelligence.

managing the expectations of participants. During ALP, they get to not only learn but also implement their knowledge and

skills in real-time industry problems. Further, it gives them exposure to real engagement in managerial roles. During ALP,

the learning and practice of concepts puts them in the right path to illustrious careers.

The programme has been highly acclaimed by the industry and has lived up to its promise of providing thecorporate world with experienced mid-level and senior level management professional having a modernoutlook.

I had a short but in-depth interaction with the PGPM Batch of 2010, delivering aguest-lecture. I was particularly impressed by the incisive nature of questions from theaudience. Most of the audience have had 5 or more years of hands on experience insome of the finest learning grounds in Corporate India. This had clearly been a ‘forcemultiplier’ in preparing these young minds for a structured management course – theysee deeper, they make better synaptic connections and they learn more. I would whole-heartedly encourage you to hire these bright sparks – they are battle-hardened andready for Middle Management.

India’s rapid growth is increasingly underpinned by its traditional industries seeking to expand

globally and the new services industries scaling up domestically. To manage both these models, India

will continue to have a high demand for new talent with a holistic understanding of business models,

organization management, financial planning and enabling technologies. The SPJIMR PGPM

Programme has been ideally designed to meet this holistic need and aims to rapidly hone up students

with at least five years of work experience - who already understand the competitive nature of

business and appreciate how organizations work. In my interaction with the current batch, I found

them to be articulate, confident, very well informed and above all, risk takers. The skills that this

batch emerges with, will make them extremely attractive for consulting and advisory firms.
