QCE 52B: Language Teaching

Approaches

Course description This course introduces student-teachers to the theory and practice of teaching the following areas of language learning: listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, representing, grammar and vocabulary. It aims to help student teachers explore a range of strategies and skills for developing language proficiency in students, and develop lesson outlines for the above areas of language learning in integrated ways. Student-teachers will become familiar with the theoretical perspectives, approaches and principles that underpin language teaching and learning. They will also develop an ability to select, evaluate, adapt, and use a variety of resources for language teaching and modes of assessment of learning. By encouraging a critical, integrated and balanced view of theory and practice, this course aims to develop informed, reflective and effective beginning teachers of English Language at the secondary school level.

QCE 52B: Language Teaching

Approaches

Course objectives At the end of the course, students will be able to: • relate the theories, principles and processes of English Language teaching and

learning to the areas of language learning: listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, representing, grammar and vocabulary;

• apply these theories, principles and teaching processes to activity and lesson planning;

• demonstrate skills in teaching strategies and techniques for teaching learners of different ability in secondary schools;

• apply principles of materials adaptation and demonstrate textual analysis skills;

• reflect critically on teaching practices in school.

Teaching Assistantship (TA) incorporated

into QCE 52B

Course description The Teaching Assistantship (TA) is a school attachment in the programme. This 4-week attachment is a period of intensive observation and reflection of the teaching profession by student teachers. The purpose of TA is to provide student teachers opportunities to observe their CTs and other experienced teachers teaching and managing their classes. They may be required to do assisted teaching during TA.

OBJECTIVES OF TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP Through the TA, the student teachers will have the opportunities to a) develop practical awareness and appreciation of the role of the teacher; b) broaden their experience and understanding of the realities of teaching and learning in the schools; c) understand their pupils and develop skills to respond appropriately to their needs, interests and capacities; d) develop skills and capacities for observation/reflective learning; e) develop an awareness of service expectations and professional norms.

QCE 52C: Unit planning & Language

Course description This course aims to enable pre-service teachers to design unit plans to enhance students’ learning in secondary school contexts. Student-teachers will engage in the process of developing a unit of work using principles of curriculum planning. They will develop the skills of planning a unit of work taking into account students’ profile and needs, the English Language Syllabuses and the macro contexts that influence the development of unit plans. Student-teachers will also be introduced to the principles of assessment with an emphasis on an integrated approach to teaching, learning and assessment. They will plan and develop a range of assessment tasks.

Course objectives At the end of the course, student teachers will be able to: • plan and develop a unit of work by taking into account the principles of

curriculum planning, the macro factors that influence unit planning, students’ needs, the English Language syllabuses and principles of materials adaptations;

• plan and develop a range of assessment tasks that integrate teaching, learning and assessment;

• differentiate assessment tasks to suit the diverse needs and abilities of students.

QCE 52A: Language Teaching Practice

Course description This course aims to develop preservice teachers’ understanding of teaching practice in a school context. It enables them to engage in the process of designing lessons and implementing them. Student-teachers will be provided the opportunities to apply the language teaching approaches and assessment principles that they have learnt in the earlier courses. They will be provided feedback on their lesson preparation and delivery and they will reflect on their teaching practices with a focus on theory-practice link.

QCE 52A: Language Teaching Practice

Course objectives At the end of the course, student-teachers will be able to: • Apply language teaching approaches and strategies and

assessment principles to lesson design and implementation; • Demonstrate pedagogical reasoning skills & ability to respond

to a variety of teaching situations; and • Reflect critically on their teaching practices.
