POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION (PRIMARY) I would like to extend a warm welcome to you as a member of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education Programme for Primary Teachers and look forward to meeting you on Monday 3rd September 2018. I hope that you will have a rewarding and successful year as a teacher in training. Please note that this is primarily an English medium programme but that we try to offer students who speak Welsh an increasing number of opportunities through the medium of Welsh, as far as possible. ALL students are required to complete an initial school placement of no less than 2 weeks in a primary mainstream setting prior to commencing the programme. This is in addition to any other experience you may have gained. If you are currently employed as a Teaching Assistant you should contact me by email to seek further clarification on this aspect. You will need to provide details of your current role and the children you are involved with in the email. The initial placement does not need to be completed in a two week block but can be carried out one day a week over a longer period of time if this is more convenient for you and the school. INITIAL SCHOOL PLACEMENT GUIDANCE All students accepted for the PGCE Primary programme must obtain some school experience during the period immediately before entry to the programme. At least 3 days must be spent in a class for children under five years of age. The rest of the time should be spent in Foundation Phase / Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 visiting as many classes as possible. You are asked to arrange to spend at least a fortnight in a Primary School in your home locality. This must be completed during the Summer Term prior to the commencement of the programme. You will need to approach a local Head Teacher to seek permission to have informal attachment to the school. The Head Teacher of the placement school will be asked to complete a Certificate of Attendance and a feedback form commenting upon your experiences and attitude. During your attachment, you should keep a file which you will be asked to bring to university and share with others. This will need to include the following:

A short description of the school and its catchment area.

A plan of the building showing where the classes are situated.

A timetable for each day showing subjects taught and to whom.

A short description of what you observed in the under fives class including:

any information you received on teachers’ planning in the areas of learning for children under five;

number of children and age range of the class; learning resources available indoors and out; the daily classroom routine; how the children are grouped and for what purpose; the range of activities provided for children each day; any other adults in the class. If so what are their roles? participation in learning activities with the children; talk to them about what they are doing; collection of some examples of children’s paintings and drawings, noting the age of the child

on each picture.

Note how all the classes were organised in terms of pupil groups (age/ability), look at teaching strategies (e.g. individual / group / whole class).

Note how the school is adapting to the changes within the curriculum e.g. the Literacy and Numeracy Framework and Digital Competence Framework, plus any other recent developments.

Observe how teachers are assessing pupils and how they mark pupils’ work.

Ask about procedures for pupils with Additional Learning Needs.

Ask about school behaviour management policies. You can record your observations in any way e.g. you may use diary entries, plans, sketches, photographs, lesson plans, samples of children’s work etc., in order to create a picture of the life of the school and classroom. Your record will be used during the programme to compare and contrast your experiences with those of other students on the programme and, in addition, during the whole year for discussions and seminars and as the basis for some of the assignments set for continuous assessment. Take advantage of any opportunity offered to share in the life of the school, its routine duties and general activities both inside and outside the building, and to discuss primary education with the school staff. Remember always that you are a guest of the school, and that teachers have many demands on their time. INITIAL SCHOOL PLACEMENT PROCEDURES

The following procedures must be strictly adhered to in arranging and undertaking the two weeks’ Initial School Placement. Please note that it is essential that you have the experience and there are no exceptions. This should take place prior to the beginning of the programme i.e. Summer Term 2018. I. The student is to contact the Head Teacher of a convenient Primary School and make initial informal

arrangements. II. The student must then inform the PGCE Primary Programme Director as soon as possible, of the

arrangements by completing the Initial School Placement Form – (PG/PR5).This form should be returned no later than 29th June 2018.

III. During the Initial School Placement the student will be expected to:

(a) Carry out his/her observations as advised in the Guidance Form - (PG/PR3).

(b) Keep a daily diary/journal/file (guidance on PG/PR3). These assignments will serve as a basis for initial discussion during Induction Week sessions. VI. The students should request the Head Teacher to complete the Certificate of Attendance -

(PG/PR6). VII. This Certificate of Attendance must be presented at the time of registration, together with other

documents which may be required by the Registry.

Audit Information

Whilst on the programme your literacy, numeracy and science skills and knowledge will be assessed. The

tests for literacy and numeracy will be similar in content to those you completed as part of your interview.

Details of the format of the science assessments will be shared with you during your university based

science sessions. You will be provided with more details about these assessments closer to the time in order

to help you carry out some revision exercises. In the mean time you may want to revisit our website and

review the practice tests for literacy and numeracy.

Assignment Information The assignment for the programme consists of a patchwork model which involves the completion of several

smaller assignments or ‘patches’. The timing for the submission of these patches along with the word count

is detailed below.

This is an integral part of the student’s postgraduate programme, and all students must complete at least two weeks’ attachment before they register in September. IMPORTANT INFORMATION

It is important that if, for whatever reason, you do not intend to take up the place offered, that you

inform either the relevant tutor or Admissions at the earliest opportunity, in order that other

applicants may not be prevented from having a place. Ideally this should be no later than August 24th

2018.

You will need to contact your appropriate Student Finance depending on where you reside concerning

the payment of the fees for the programme and complete the PN1 Form. Information concerning

Student Finance is provided on our website at http://www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/finance and we recommend

that you read this information and apply for assistance, if you have not already done so. You will receive

confirmation of how much contribution you will receive towards your fees and the university will also

receive confirmation of this once you have enrolled.

Satisfactory police checks are required from all applicants for PGCE programmes. Failure to undertake

this will result in applicants being unable to commence the programme. You should have received

information relating to this with your original offer letter from us. If you have not undertaken this

procedure, please contact the Admissions Office as soon as possible on Tel. 029 2041 6010.

If the offer that you have received from UCAS Teacher Training is conditional on any academic

qualifications, these will need to be sent to the Admissions Unit. Proof of completed qualifications if not

shown at interview will also need to be verified which include GCSE English Language, Maths and

Science, A level C grade in a curriculum based subject and 2:2 Honours degree or above. All results are

to be sent to Admissions, Communications, Marketing and Student Recruitment, Cardiff

Metropolitan University, Western Avenue, CARDIFF CF5 2YB.

Should you change your home address or e-mail address between the time of application and taking

up a place on the programme, please inform both UCAS Teacher Training and the Admissions Office at

Cardiff Metropolitan University, so your records can be updated. If we are not informed of your new

details important information concerning the programme will not be received by you.

Registration for teaching is required through the appropriate General Teaching Council, for which there

is a fee.

If you intend working in Wales after you qualify, you will need to complete and submit an application

form and registration fee through the Education Workforce Council who will visit the institution during

your programme to assist you with this process.
