ACC Fitness for Work Project
The Better@Work pilot project finished in December 2012 and is no longer providing a clinical service around return to work for clients post injury. WPHO has undertaken a new ACC Fitness for Work contract. This is a service offering education and support to GPs about the new initiatives that ACC is now offering with the finalisation of Better@Work.
There will be a CME education session on the 5th March 2013 around Fitness for Work/Vocational Rehabilitation using a practical
case study based approach.

Immunisation News
2013 Influenza Programme: Please see MOH 1 Feb communication re Influenza Programme.
Influenza Kit 2013 is currently being sent to Practices. Please note the subsidy has increased
to $19.40 (excl GST).
Due to the possibility of an early flu season Practices are encouraged to order stock now (min
order 50 doses) order on line www.hcon.co.nz , by faxed order form available on
www.influenza.org.nz , or in your kit.
Claims to Healthpac for funded vaccination can be made immediately (ie for Feb dose
administration).
If you require assistance to identify patients eligible for funded vaccine please contact Jane
Williams 448 0479. The focus this year will be on ensuring children who are eligible will be
identified and recalled early in their season.
Part Time Dietitian for Diabetes
We are delighted to introduce our new Dietitian.
Ada Cheung is the newest member of the Long Term Conditions Services Team, at Waitemata PHO and will be working mostly
Mondays and Tuesdays.
She is supporting the Diabetes Self Management Education Programme (DSME) as well as being available for one on one
consultations with people with Diabetes who are unable to attend the DSME sessions. She is also able to see patients with IHD or
CVD risk >= 15%. GP Practices may refer via the CVD/Diabetes advanced form; both Diabetics and patients with IHD/CVD risk
>= 15% must have bloods and measurements completed as per CVD/Diabetes advanced form. Ada speaks English, Cantonese
and Mandarin. Ada will be available for consultations at GP Practices on request if access is an issue for patients. On behalf of the Long Term Conditions Team

Diabetes & CVD Courses for Nurses
There are a number of courses coming up on the LTC Education Calendar. The Introduction
Course is a one day course aimed at ENs, new graduate and return to practice RNs. The 3 day
Fundamentals courses is aimed at RNs who are looking for more in-depth knowledge, it is NZQA
accredited at a Level 7. This course is ideal for those providing education and support to their
diabetic and CVD patients. It is essential for those running nurse-led clinics. The 2 day Update
Course is for nurses who have already attended the Fundamentals Course (or something
similar) and provides more in-depth information alongside some insight into issues and other co-
morbities surrounding living with and caring for those with diabetes and CVD. For further

DSME 2012 (Diabetes Self Management Education) –
For Patients
Please continue to refer your newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients for DSME. The course is
also available free to those who are not newly diagnosed but would benefit from further
education. Support people are welcome and the course covers a wide range of topics. The
courses consist of three two hour sessions and are held monthly at the Waitemata PHO
boardroom, Dates and times as follows:

Short Survey Around Management of Childhood
Obesity
On behalf of Ministry of Health, we invite you to do a short survey around management of
childhood obesity designed by Dr Nitin Rajput, Paediatric Registrar and Dr Pat Tuohy, Chief
Advisor, Child and Youth Health at Ministry of Health. The survey will provide the ministry with
information around training and service development needs of primary care physicians caring for
children who are overweight or obese. It will also give important feedback about service availability
and management practices around the country.
The survey is online and would not take more than 10 minute to answer. A link to the survey was sent out in the RNZCGP newsletter, Epulse on 29th January.

Introducing Taking control – A programme for
change
„Taking control‟ is a Heart Foundation programme which aims to support individuals and
family/whānau to achieve lifestyle changes to help manage their elevated cardiovascular (CV)
risk.
It is designed to be worked through in a structured way in partnership with a healthcare provider.
It is made up of two key components:
1. Patient resource „Taking control‟
2. e-learning programme for health professionals
A healthcare provider e-learning programme developed by the Heart Foundation in partnership
with Ko Awatea to support primary healthcare providers, successfully design and deliver
cardiovascular risk assessment and management services. This programme includes training to
support the delivery of „Taking control‟.

In order to be able to use the resource correctly and effectively it is strongly recommended to
complete the e-learning programme before using the A5 Patient resource “Taking Control”.
