President’s MessageThe summer is quickly slipping by and soon we’ll be thinking of hunting and the holidays. But, before we get too far ahead there are plenty of happenings planned over the next few months. September brings an Archery Benefit Tournament to support our veterans, an NRA Defensive Pistol Course, a Preparedness Seminar, CPR training, a 100 Yard Pistol Shoot, a Black Powder Shoot, an NRA 3 Gun Event, and more!! Our calendar is full! So come out and join the fun!!!The Fall will bring some interesting changes. As many of you are aware, our election process has been changed in an attempt to streamline the procedure and hopefully eliminate the long waiting to hear the results. Nominees will be announced at our November Member meeting and nominations from the floor will be accepted at this meeting also. No nominations will be accepted after the November meeting. The election will be held at our Member meeting on the first Friday of December. Come out and vote for your favorite candidates!!There are several amendments to the Constitution that will be voted on over the next few months. First, there is an amendment that changes the time when a member becomes in arrears. The second deals with the timeframe within which a member in arrears can return to the club. Finally, there is a proposal to reduce from four to two the number of years required as a member in order to be eligible to run for office. These are significant changes that you, the members should be aware of and should consider carefully. This is your club. Come to the meetings, make your voice heard and VOTE!!!Enjoy the rest of the summer, shoot straight and be safe!Tony Chirles

Safety Matters – Jerry MeenanNow that we are approaching the Labor Day holiday weekend many of us are starting to think about the Fall hunting seasons. As we start getting our hunting gear together, we plan on going to our range to sight in our rifles or shotguns. Fall weekends are especially busy times at our ranges. Range safety is an important part of how we conduct ourselves. To assist all of us in our efforts on our range, Putnam Fish & Game Association has a chief range safety officer (CRSO), range safety officers (RSO’s), and a Range Standard Operating Proce-dure (SOP).Our Range SOP can be found on our website at pcfga.org. One of the critical safety rules for use of our range is well defined in the SOP and that is: “Do not handle a firearm while others are downrange.” Yellow strobe lights are strategically placed along the firing line and turned on to alert shooters that someone is down range. In addition, signage is present to alert members when the range is “cold”.When a “cease fire” is called shooters are to stop firing and unload their firearms. If a supervising RSO is present, please follow the RSO’s instructions. During the “cease fire” do not handle your firearms! If you are not downrange to change targets, please stay behind the “Safe Line”.Long gun shooters are to remove cartridges from their firearm’s magazine. If the firearm has a detachable magazine, it must be removed from their gun. Next, the action and chamber are cleared. Lastly, the firearm is racked with the action opened or chamber flagged to demonstrate to all concerned that the gun has been made safe.Handgun shooters have two options either holster their firearm or place it unloaded on their shooting bench. When the firearm is placed on the bench the action must be open so that a visual inspection shows that the gun is safe. If the gun has a magazine, it must be removed. If the gun is a revolver with a swing-out cylin-der, please position the gun with the cylinder out (placing a dowel between the open cylinder and the frame is helpful). If the revolver has a fixed cylinder, please open the loading gate and be sure to remove all cartridge casings. When the range is declared “hot”, it should be loudly announced and the bell is sounded three times to alert everyone that live fire can resume. At this point guns can be uncased or cased on the shooting bench with the muzzle pointed downrange.I wish all of you a good hunting season! Always remember: safety matters in all we do.
