8:00am Holy Communion
10:30am Parish Communion*
The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.
Opening Hymn*
1. For the fruits of all creation,
thanks be to God;
for the gifts to every nation,
thanks be to God;
for the ploughing, sowing, reaping,
silent growth while we are sleeping,
future needs in earth’s safe keeping,
thanks be to God.
2. In the just reward of labour,
God’s will is done;
in the help we give our neighbour,
God’s will is done;
in our world-wide task of caring
for the hungry and despairing,
in the harvests we are sharing,
God’s will is done.
3. For the harvests of his Spirit,
thanks be to God;
for the good we all inherit,
thanks be to God;
for the wonders that astound us,
for the truths that still confound us,
most of all, that love has found us,
thanks be to God.
Words: Fred Pratt Green (1903-2000) Music: East Acklam, Francis Jackson (b 1917)
© 1970 Stainer & Bell Ltd (Ancient & Modern – 284)
Collect
Lord, you have taught us
that all our doings without love are nothing worth:
send your Holy Spirit
and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love,
the true bond of peace and of all virtues,
without which whoever lives is counted dead before you.
Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
4
First Reading – Ezekiel 17.22-24
Thus says the Lord God: I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of a cedar; I will set it out.
I will break off a tender one from the topmost of its young twigs; I myself will plant it on a high
and lofty mountain. On the mountain height of Israel I will plant it, in order that it may roduce
boughs and bear fruit, and become a noble cedar. Under it every kind of bird will live; in the
shade of its branches will nest winged creatures of every kind. All the trees of the field shall
know that I am the LORD. I bring low the high tree, I make high the low tree; I dry up the
green tree and make the dry tree flourish. I the LORD have spoken; I will accomplish it.
Second Reading – 2 Corinthians 5.6-10,14-17
Brothers and sisters, we are always confident; even though we know that while we
are at home in the body we are away from the Lord – for we walk by faith, not by
sight. Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and
at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to
please him. For all of us must appear before the judgement seat of Christ, so that
each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or
evil. The love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for
all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might live no
longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. From now on,
therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once
knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if
anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see,
everything has become new!
Gradual Hymn*
1. Rise and hear! The Lord is speaking,
as the gospel words unfold;
we, in all our agelong seeking,
find no firmer truth to hold.
2. Word of goodness, truth, and beauty,
heard by simple folk and wise,
word of freedom, word of duty,
word of life beyond our eyes.
3. Word of God’s forgiveness granted
to the wild or guilty soul,
word of love that works undaunted,
changes, heals, and makes us whole.
4. Speak to us, O Lord, believing,
as we hear, the sower sows;
may our hearts, your word receiving,
be the good ground where it grows.
Words: Howard Charles Adie Gaunt (1902-1983)
Music: Sussex, English traditional melody adapted by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
(Ancient & Modern – 387)

Gospel – Mark 4.26-34
Such a large crowd gathered around Jesus that he got into a boat and began to teach
them using many parables. Jesus said, ‘The kingdom of God is as if someone would
scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would
sprout and grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself, first the stalk,
then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes
in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.’ Jesus also said, ‘With what can we
compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard
seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet
when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large
branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.’ With many such
parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to
them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.
Offertory Hymn*
1. Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heaven, to earth come down,
fix in us thy humble dwelling,
all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesu, thou art all compassion,
pure unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation,
enter every trembling heart.
2. Come, almighty to deliver,
let us all thy grace receive;
suddenly return, and never,
never more thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray, and praise thee, without ceasing,
glory in thy perfect love.
3. Finish then thy new creation:
pure and spotless let us be;
let us see thy great salvation,
perfectly restored in thee;
Changed from glory into glory
till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before thee,
lost in wonder, love, and praise.
Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Blaenwern, William Penfro Rowlands (1860-1937) (Ancient & Modern – 721)
6
Communion Anthem*
Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes;
and I shall keep it unto the end.
Words: Psalm 119.33
Music: Thomas Attwood (1765-1838)
Communion Hymn*
1. Now the green blade rises from the buried grain,
wheat that in the dark earth many years has lain;
love lives again, that with the dead has been:
Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.
2. In the grave they laid Him, Love whom we had slain,
thinking that he never would awake again,
laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen:
Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.
3. Forth he came at Easter, like the risen grain,
he that for three days in the grave had lain,
back from the dead my risen Lord is seen:
Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.
4. When our hearts are wintry, grieving, or in pain,
then your touch can call us back to life again,
field of our hearts that dead and bare have been:
Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.
Words: John Macleod Campbell Crum (1872-1958)
Music: Noel Nouvelet, French Carol, 15th century, harmonised by David Iliff (b 1939)
(Ancient & Modern – 212)
Post Communion Prayer
Loving Father,
we thank you for feeding us at the supper of your Son:
sustain us with your Spirit,
that we may serve you here on earth until our joy is complete in heaven,
and we share in the eternal banquet with Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
7
Final Hymn*
1. We give immortal praise
to God the Father's love
for all our comforts here,
and better hopes above:
he sent his own
eternal Son,
to die for sins
that man had done.
2. To God the Son belongs
immortal glory too,
who bought us with his blood
from everlasting woe:
and now he lives,
and now he reigns,
and sees the fruit
of all his pains.
3. To God the Spirit's name
immortal worship give,
whose new-creating power
makes the dead sinner live:
his work completes
the great design,
and fills the soul
with joy divine.
4. Almighty God, to thee
be endless honours done,
the undivided Three,
and the mysterious One:
where reason fails
with all her powers,
there faith prevails,
and love adores.
Words: Isaac Watts (1674-1748)
Music: Christchurch, Charles Steggall (1826-1905) – A&M 224
(Ancient & Modern – 278)

Earthquake Appeal
The recent earthquakes in Nepal have
touched that hearts of all of us, and many of
you will have given to the Nepal appeal to
support the efforts to help the stricken
people of the region. At the last PCC
meeting it was agreed that All Saints would
bring forward their Mission Giving to
include a response to the appeal. As a result
we have donated £500 to the DEC
Emergencies appeal fund and £250 to the
Paldorje Sherpa Foundation, a charity with
which Beryl Kirtland's son, Toby, is involved.
We feel sure that you will agree with these
decisions, and will join us in prayers for all
those affected by the disaster.
Oakham PCC
The PCC met on Wednesday 20 May, and
the main points were as follows: The DBF
and Cathedral confirmed that all
employees are paid at least the ‘living
wage’; a second Churchwarden has still not
been appointed, and Alison Long is happy
to discuss the role with any potential
candidates; officers were re-elected, but a
replacement for Peter Hill as treasurer is
still sought; income has been over budget
due to some generous donations; donation
agreed as part of mission giving to Nepal
(see separate notice); a PCC planning
meeting is proposed, possibly on 27
September at Launde; boiler planning is still
ongoing, although a meeting with the DAC
has taken place. Full minutes are available
on the noticeboard by the north door.
