In 1934, a congregation from Defiance, Ohio met with Erie Sauder, a local woodworker, to discuss wood furnishings for their newly renovated worship environment . Erie guided them through the process of selecting the furniture that best suited their needs, and then he produced the furniture to their specifications.

Erie Sauder found his passion helping this congregation with their furniture . He was inspired . He gathered a few friends and relatives together to found the company, that today, is Sauder Worship Seating .

Erie’s standards on quality, craftsmanship, innovation, and customer satisfaction still guide us each and every

day . To date, we have provided furniture for over 35,000 congregations around the world .

At Sauder Worship Seating® every seat has a contour . The contour provides maximum seating comfort, and strength over the life of the pew . In addition to the contoured seat, we also offer a flat or contoured back. These pew options offer the support and have an appealing appearance .

All our seating products are designed for use in worship settings . Sauder Worship Seating® applies the same design and engineering principles to our seating that is used by office and task chair designers and engineers . Our pews and benches have been created to provide comfort through the combination of a contoured seat and back that utilizes the appropriate foam .

Comfort plays a critical role when making a decision related to seating. Sauder Worship Seating offers several comfortable foam options which are also durable providing lasting quality .

Choose from conventional or high resiliency (HR) foam. The Indentation Force Deflection (IFD) indicates the load bearing capacity of the foam . The larger the number, the more force it takes to compress the foam . Too little density allows someone to bottom out, while too much can make for a stiff seating experience. HR is a change to the initial manufacturing process to add support, comfort and resilience or bounce to the foam . HR foam by nature is a denser product, but has a lower IFD . This combination allows for some additional "give" resulting in a bit softer feel than conventional foam while preventing "bottoming out" .

People Won’t Sit the Way You Think They Will

Building Code Requirements

In the early planning stages of a new church, or when replacing pews in your existing building, consider how many people you'll want to seat . How much space will each person take?

Building code is the standard that architects and builders are required to use to determine seating capacity . It says to allow 18" of seating per person . To put this into perspective, think about how much room you have in a coach seat on an airplane . Regulation seats actually give you 19" per person . That's pretty close to the person next to you!

According to code, a 15-foot (180") pew will seat 10 people who sit shoulder-to-shoulder filling the entire pew length.

According to research on the way people actually sit, a 15-foot (180") pew will fit only 7 people.
