t Efficient Determination of Thermal PropertiesFrom Crude to Distillates

Thermal analysis of crude oil and petroleum fractions is required for smooth operation of refinery processes and ensuring product quality. Temperature stability, evaporation loss and wax appearance temperature are typical characteristics that must be measured.

Temperature stability of petroleum fractions

The determination of the oxidative induction temperature (OIT) is a rapid method for assessing the stability of petroleum fractions. The test is usually performed according to a standard, e.g. ASTM D6186 which applies pres-sure differential scanning calori-metry (DSC). Our high pressure DSC is ideally suited to carrying out fast and reliable stability in-vestigations of oils.

www.mt.com/dsc

Noack evaporation loss determination of oils

For quality reasons lubricating oils should exhibit a low evapora-tion rate. The ASTM standard test method D6375 for the determina-tion of the evaporation loss of lubricating oils by the Noack method uses thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The METTLER TOLEDO TGA system with sample robot and automated evaluation provides high sample throughput and fast pass/fail assessment of the oil.

www.mt.com/tga

Wax appearance temperature of crude oil

In order to predict and prevent the occurrence of wax deposition which can form at every step from oil production to refining, the wax appearance temperature (WAT) of crude oil needs to be known. We offer efficient tools for accurately ascertaining the WAT: the DSC 1 if a high degree of automation is desired or the FP82HT Hot Stage for visual determination.

ting Less Corrosion and Fouling

and Lower Chemical Costs

The main task of a desalter is to remove salt and dirt from the crude. It also makes sense to neutralize acids at this stage as otherwise downstream corrosion and fouling will take its toll. Only with accurate process measure-ments will these operations be truly effective. With unique expertise in refinery process analysis, METTLER TOLEDO has designed a range of instru-ments ideal for this purpose.

Desalter performance on a new level

The trend to refine more and more high sulfur sour crudes means refinery corrosion and fouling problems continue to grow. It is therefore fundamental to clean sour crude as much as possible, as early as possible. In the de-salter, cleaning starts with maxi-mizing the transfer of inorganic salts, rust and sediment from the crude to the water, followed by neutralization of acidic com-pounds, and ends with optimal dehydration. In-line pH measure-ment has enormous value in de-salter operations.

Avoid overdosing chemical reagents

pH has a great influence on sev-eral process mechanisms, and its accurate control directly affects the efficiency and cost of desalter operations. The time lag between grab sampling and laboratory pH analysis, frequently results in overdosing of pH modifiers. Significant savings can be made with in-line measurement of pH as it allows for real-time control, meaning chemicals can be added exactly when necessary.

Less oxygen, less corrosion

Corrosion is a complex issue in-volving many contributing factors. Often, refinery operators feel com-pelled to use high-cost exotic materials in process equipment to prevent corrosion. However, more economical alternatives exist. One of these, which is often neglected, is reduction of the dissolved oxy-gen concentration in the desalter wash water. Water treatment based on this simple measurement can result in a significant reduction in down-stream corrosion.

Probes that last

Heavy hydrocarbons and sulfides pose little threat to our series of InPro 4800 i pH electrodes. The long, helix shaped reference path and PTFE annular diaphragm pro-vide a strong barrier against ag-gressive chemicals and oil.

Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM) technology, built into the electrodes, provides excellent sig-nal integrity and advanced sensor diagnostics (see page 17).

Rely on the InPro 4800 i for maxi-mum desalter efficiency.

Easy accessibility

Retractable housings, such as the InTrac 777, provide direct access to the process sensor for mainte-nance purposes or replacement. An integrated flushing chamber allows electrode cleaning and calibration without the need to remove it from the housing. The Tri-Lock safety system prevents escape of wash water and in-creases process safety and reliability.

Without the need for a slipstream, InTrac retractable housings offer the smallest possible installation footprint.

Maintenance automated

Each measurement point is only as accurate as its calibration. The EasyClean 400 fully-automatic cleaning and calibration unit ensures pH sensors are kept in perfect condition at all times and reduces maintenance to a mini-mum. Flexibility in cleaning / calibration programmes means completely unattended maintenance is easily achieved, whenever it is required.

Under the Harshest Conditions

Refinery and petrochemical operations present challenges that are not common to any other process industry. METTLER TOLEDO understands these and manufactures instruments that measure up to the task, no matter how tough.

Sour water corrosion

Steam, which is injected to im-prove separation of hydrocarbon fractions, condenses in the cooler regions of the column. Hydrogen sulfide and a number of other im-purities tend to be present in this condensate, leading to the forma-tion of various acids and heat-stable salts. This “sour water” is a major source of corrosion in the top part of the tower and in con-denser tubing.

Consumption of chemicals

To fight corrosion, it is common to inject chemical inhibitors. Be-cause corrosion is often blamed on the presence of acids, the response is to increase the pH by adding alkaline neutralizers. With the continuously varying compo-sition of sour water however, these reagents are more often than not, dosed in excess. De-spite the high chemicals expendi-ture it rarely is a remedy, as a significant cause of corrosion is alkaline sour water – making the cure worse than the disease.

pH control does the trick

Significant savings are made when the feed of reagents is con-trolled based on the pH value of sour water. Not only does main-taining the correct pH level result in a much lower rate of corrosion, it also significantly reduces the consumption of chemicals. To al-low for continuous pH control, we provide very accurate pH analyz-ers using sensors that withstand the high sulfide environment and frequent hydrocarbon surges.

Control sour water pH

As with crude distilling, the fluid catalytic cracking unit also pro-duces substantial quantities of sour water. This means that this plant also experiences corrosion problems. Frequently, heat-stable salts, which cause carbonate cracking, are the source. METTLER TOLEDO in-line analyz-ers help you to monitor and con-trol the process pH to levels where corrosion is minimized.

Improved slurry oil quality

While gasoline is the main prod-uct of the FCC unit, a number of other fractions are obtained at the same time. Although the catalyst in the FCC process is continu-ously regenerated, catalyst fines end up in the fractionator column. These accumulate in the bottom stream in the slurry oil. To in-crease its value, the slurry oil is purified through filtration or clarifi-cation. In-line turbidity monitoring of the clarified oil ensures real-time quality control and warns of particle breakthrough.

www.mt.com/turbidity

Scrubber performance

FCC regenerator flue gas contains SO2, SO3 and catalyst fines. Wet scrubbing systems are used to control the emission of these sub-stances. In-line pH control en-sures the lowest emission levels. An EasyClean automated cleaning and calibration system ensures the measurement sensor is al-ways working efficiently.

n Greater Safetyin Hazardous Processes

METTLER TOLEDO understands the difficulties of sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid alkylation, and provides analytical sensors that are durable and reliable. In alkylation processes, safety cannot be compromised. Only in-line analysis allows you to respond in time in the event of process upsets that could lead to accidents.

Sulfuric acid alkylation

The effluent from the alkylation re-action contains traces of acid. If not removed, these cause corro-sion and fouling downstream. Our inductive conductivity measure-ment systems help to control the caustic washing that eliminates them. pH control is vital in the subsequent water wash to avoid emulsions forming, which can re-sult in carry-over of acid or caus-tic, leading to serious damage of the fractionation column.

Reliable measurement despite HF acid

We use HF-resistant glass for our pH electrodes designed for hydro-fluoric acid environments. In-stalled in the potassium hydroxide regenerator, sensors such as the InPro 4262 i ensure you can maintain the proper caustic pH in the HF scrubber and be sure of its efficiency.

ISM technology integrated into the sensor greatly simplifies installa-tion, handling and maintenance (see page 17).

pH control in strippers

As sour water is typically a mix-ture of dissolved acidic or basic gases, stripping it is not an easy process. Forcing high quantities of steam through sour water will remove certain gases but leaves others dissolved or bound as salts. pH is of direct influence on the phase equilibrium of dissolved gases and can shift the equilib-rium towards the gas phase. As gases, these compounds are sim-ply removed using less steam.

Solid electrolyte, rugged performance

With the abundance of poisoning substances it contains, sour water is one of the harshest media on pH electrodes. Xerolyt Extra sen-sors feature a solid polymer elec-trolyte which provides an excellent barrier against compounds that would quickly poison other probes. Instead of a diaphragm, sensors with Xerolyt Extra have an open junction, eliminating the risk of clogging. Combined, these features ensure high reliability and a long service life.

Efficient Strippingwith pH Control

Sour water is generated in many refinery processes. Typically, it contains hydrogen sulfide but hydrogen cyanide, ammonia, carbon dioxide, acids and phenols can also be present. pH control helps the sour water stripper to efficiently remove the gases so that the water may be safely re-used or exposed of.

t Early Warningof Process Upsets

To maximize sulfur recovery, the Claus process is often followed by a tail gas cleanup. In-line pH monitoring helps in protecting process equipment against corrosion. Although high sulfide concentrations make this one of the worst environments for measuring pH, METTLER TOLEDO electrodes are more than up to the challenge.

pH in sulfur recovery

Tail gas cleanup boosts the effi-ciency of the sulfur recovery unit to almost 100 %. When catalyst used in the reaction loses its ac-tivity, breakthrough of SO2 may result. In the quench tower, this will manifest itself through a drop in quench water pH. In-line pH monitoring will warn of this event so that corrective measures can be taken and serious equipment corrosion avoided.

Low maintenance

Quench water typically has a high suspended solids concentration, which is problematic to most pH probes as it clogs the reference diaphragm. Our InPro 4260 Xero-lyt Extra pH electrode is ideal for this application. The sensor’s large, open reference junction means clogging is eliminated and therefore maintenance is signifi-cantly lower. The predictive diag-nostics of ISM reduces mainte-nance still further (see page 17).

Reduced steam costs

There is a direct correlation be-tween the acid gas load on an amine solution and its pH. This means that the difference between the pH value of lean and rich amine in an amine sweetener tells you exactly what the acid gas load is. Knowing this, the amount of steam needed to regenerate the rich amine can be adapted: more steam when the acid gas load is high, less steam when it is low.

Dual-channel transmitter

We offer an extensive transmitter portfolio. The M700 dual-channel transmitter is perfect for use in the amine sweetener application as the pH of both the lean and the rich amine can be measured at the same time and even the differ-ential value can be transmitted. The M700 is fully certified for haz-ardous area use, comes in a ro-bust stainless steel housing and is available with multiple analog, Foundation™ Fieldbus or Profibus® outputs.

Risk of Boiler FailureAvoided with In-line Analysis

The treatment of water for steam generation is extremely sophisticated and requires in-depth understanding of water chemistry. Although it is a clean medium, water is very diffi-cult to analyze accurately. METTLER TOLEDO is an expert in ultrapure water analysis.

Stable measurement despite low conductivity

Most modern pH measurements use potentiometric sensors where the potential is measured against a reference electrode. As boiler feedwater has a very low dis-solved solids concentration, it has virtually no electrical conductivity. This makes it very hard for the pH sensor to measure the difference in potential, often resulting in very unstable pH readings. Our pre-pressurized pH electrodes use their own electrolyte to create sufficient conductivity for flawless measurement.

www.mt.com/pHure

Oxygen under control

Corrosion is a complex problem with many reaction mechanisms involved. Dissolved oxygen boosts corrosion and increases the corrosivity of impurities such as chlorides. Our polarographic oxygen sen-sors accurately measure dis-solved oxygen to levels as low as 1 ppb. Maintenance is easy thanks to smart and simple de-sign, and takes no more than two minutes.

www.mt.com/DO

Accurate TDS monitoring

Too high a dissolved solids con-tent leads to scaling and loss of thermal efficiency.

METTLER TOLEDO provides con-ductivity sensors designed for boiler water use that, thanks to integrated temperature compen-sation, measure total dissolved solids extremely accurately. With a temperature limit of 200 °C these probes can even handle saturated steam conditions.

Blowdown at the right time

When cooling water evaporates, dissolved solids concentrate. At high temperatures, precipitation of these solids causes scaling, lead-ing to reduced heat transfer and flow rates. Our conductivity sen-sors reliably detect the critical TDS level for triggering blowdown and feeding of fresh make-up wa-ter, thereby making certain the cooling water cycle remains clean and efficient.

www.mt.com/cond

pH and ORP from one sensor

Cooling water pH needs to be carefully kept in control for several reasons. Too high a pH encour-ages scaling. Too low may adversely affect biocide activity, corrosion inhibitors, etc. The oxi-dation / reduction potential is the ideal parameter for controlling disinfection, with minimal use of biocides and without the use of extensive analyzer systems. METTLER TOLEDO pH probes measure pH and ORP in parallel and give you both values at the same time.

www.mt.com/pro-pH

Modular transmitter

Plug in one module for conductiv-ity, and one for pH / ORP and you will get all three parameters from the same instrument. The multi-parameter, multi-channel M700 transmitter can be configured as desired. However, the conductiv-ity / pH / ORP set-up is the best so-lution for cooling water analysis. The M700 is fully compatible with our ISM platform and offers bene-fits that make maintenance sim-ple: full diagnostics, and Plug and Measure with pre-calibrated sen-sors (see page 17).

Measuring headspace oxygen concentration is common practice when it comes to blanketing and inerting operations in vessels that contain organic solvents and hy-drocarbons. Oxygen analysis is not only helpful in sustaining a safe atmosphere but also in con-trolling inert gas flow and for making savings in nitrogen use. Also, in vapor recovery systems oxygen analyzers have proven their value.

www.mt.com/o2-gas

The main advantage of our po-larographic oxygen sensors is that they can be installed directly in the process. As they are insen-sitive to moisture, dust and most solvents, the need for sample conditioning is eliminated. This means that installation costs are minimal and also that risk of fail-ure is reduced as weaker links are removed from the chain. Our ISM sensors offer an even higher de-gree of safety thanks to online diagnostics (see page 15).

Unlike other oxygen analyzers, METTLER TOLEDO polarographic oxygen sensors do not require costly calibration gases to main-tain their accuracy. Calibration with air is all that it takes. In com-bination with our InTrac 777 re-tractable housings, the calibration routine is very easy: retract the sensor, purge air through the housing’s integral flushing cham-ber and re-insert. The InTrac 777 can be operated manually or pneumatically.
