Petroleum makes the world go ‘round
What is Petroleum?
Raw material is called Crude oil Commonly known as “Black
Gold” Ranges in color from black
to green-brown to colorless Can be liquid like water or
thick like tar
What is Petroleum?
Used as an energy source Only meets about 36% of our energy needs
70% of petroleum is used for fuel What things might use petroleum for fuel?
Energy
There are many products that use petroleum as its starting material Medications Plastics Road Paving Refer to the common items list from yesterday
Why is it so important?
56% in 5 Middle eastern nations Iran, Iraq, Kuwait,
Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates
16% of world reserves are in North America
Use of petroleum is not uniformily distributed US uses most per
population
Where in the world?
Oil Consumption versus Population
React with oxygen in the air Molecules are rearranged CO2 and water vapor are formed
Released into the air (CO2 is a greenhouse gas)
Combustion of Oil
Can’t be used in natural state Taken to a refinery where it is separated into simpler
mixtures Mixture of various hydrocarbons

Mixture of hydrocarbons with different boiling points
Heat is applied to oil causing it to boil Forms a vapor which rises in a metal
column Vapors condense back to liquid at
different heights and temperatures (hence fractions) and collect in different containers
Fractions may be condensed further or may go on for further processing
Refining Oil
Putting It All Together
From plants and dinosaurs to powering our cars, oil is what runs our world
