Welcome Pastor Eric Olsen

*Confession and Forgiveness

Presider: If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. Let us confess our sin to God who is faithful and just and who has promised to forgive our sin and cleanse us from all unright-eousness.

Silence for reflection and self-examination.

Presider: Most merciful God,

Congregation: have mercy on us.

All: We confess to you that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not trusted you with our whole heart; we have not loved one another in deed and in truth. In your compassion forgive our sin and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ our light and our truth. Amen

Presider: With joy, I proclaim to you that Almighty God, rich in mer-cy, abundant in love, forgives you all your sin and grants you newness of life in Jesus Christ.

Congregation: Thanks be to God!

*Presider: The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion with the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Congregation: And also with you.

*Prayer of the Day:

O God our Father, at the baptism of Jesus you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Make all who are baptized into Christ faithful to their calling to be your daughters and sons, and empower us all with your Spirit, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Isaiah 42:1-9 God’s servant is endowed with God’s spirit in order to bring justice to the nations. The servant will not exercise authority boisterously or with violence, nor will wea-riness ever prevent the fulfilling of the servant’s task. God’s old promises have been fulfilled; the servant’s new assignment is to bring light to the nations. 1Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching.

Psalm 29 1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendor. 3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters. 4 The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. 5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. 8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say, “Glory!” 10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. 11 May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Reader: The word of the Lord. Response: Thanks be to God.

5Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, 7to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. 9See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.

Second Reading: Acts 10:34-43 Peter crosses the sharp religious boundary separating Jews from Gentiles and proclaims the good news of God’s inclusive forgiveness in Jesus’ name to Cornelius, a Roman centurion. As a result of Peter’s preaching, Cornelius and his family become the first Gentiles to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

34Peter began to speak to [Cornelius and his household]: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. 37That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Reader: The word of the Lord. Response: Thanks be to God.

* Holy Gospel: Matthew 3:13-17

Before Jesus begins his ministry, he is baptized by John, touched by the Spirit, and identified publicly as God’s child.

13Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be bap-tized by him. 14John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”

Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was

conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered

under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he

descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he

is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to

judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the

communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of

the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat: this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Trinity Lutheran Church ~ Palmer, Alaska

The first pastor (Pastor Elliot D. Hull) was called in the fall of 1985. He knocked on doors inviting people to worship and the first service was held on February 2, 1986. On November 8, 1987, the church was officially formed and the name Trinity Lutheran was chosen for it. Then, due to the economic recession of the 1990’s, Trinity was offered the Colony Barn Plaza in exchange for the payment of the building’s back taxes. Trinity accepted the building in 1991 and also purchased adjacent lands. In 1994, the building was renamed Trinity Barn Plaza and began a preschool and space to minister to the needs of the disabled, sick, and youth of Palmer.

3% Monthly Missionary Support Each month Petersburg Lutheran gives 3% of the offerings received to a

special ministry identified by the Church Council and approved by the

congregation at the Annual Meeting. The January offering goes to

Moringe Sokoine Secondary School located in Monduli, Tanzania. It is

run by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania. The school is a

boarding school with approximately 400 students - both boys and girls.

Tanzania is starting to provide secondary education for free, but the

quality is lacking. Secondary schools are taught in English, where

primary schools are taught in Kiswahili. In addition to these languages,

most Tanzanians also know the language of their individual tribes. Thus,

most Tanzanian secondary students are fluent in at least three languages.

Bulletin Cover Art We are looking for people who are interested in designing the bulletin cover relating to the scripture lessons for that Sunday. If you would like to design something (artwork, photo) that we could use, please contact the church office and we will send the scripture lessons to you..

GOSPEL MESSAGE ~ BAPTISM OF OUR LORD

Stand by Me

Jesus stands in the shallows of the Jordan River, his feet in the mud. Wading toward John the Baptist, he is surrounded by the confused, the wandering, the lost, the sad, the broken, the fearful. People like us. They come, confessing their sin and hoping it is still possible to change their lives and know the fullness of God filling them.

Jesus does not come to John to repent or confess sin, but to take his place in the drama of God’s saving love. His baptism is an act of commitment to God’s holy purpose. A great story is unfolding, in which he and John must play their parts: John prepared the way, calling people to renew their commitment to live as God’s chosen ones and to get ready, for the Lord was coming to them. Jesus’ place is to stand there, among and with sinners who lose their way and forget who they are.

Jesus had a mission to fulfill that is written into the names by which we know him. His very name, Jesus, means “God saves” (Matt. 1:21). He comes into the world to fulfill God’s promise of one who would be Emmanuel, “God with us” (Matt. 1:23). And here he is, already at his baptism—with us. He fulfills all righteousness by revealing that the Holy One is with us “always, to the end of the age” (Matt. 28:20), no matter our struggles or stage of life.

The divine voice tells us what we need to know: “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” The Beloved One comes to stand with us, that all the love in him may flow into our hearts, filling us with the fullness of God’s love. Our prayer today is simple: “Stand by me, Lord Jesus. Stand by me.”
