Principal’s Report

Hello to all our beautiful Peterborough families.

Well, what a month we have had!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone for the

support you have shown over the past couple

of weeks. Not only for our school, but for our

school community. People are sharing ideas,

photos and fun activities that are going on, in

and around their homes.

Staff have been working hard at school and from home to prepare a senior

and junior work pack. I hope you all received the work pack by email and/or

came in to school to pick one up. I hope the students enjoy working through

the activities included in the packs.

The highlight of March was the SRC induction assembly. I would like to

congratulate our 2020 representatives including:

School Captains: Kiara and Jacob. Vice-Captain: Rowan.

Primary Leaders: Madison, Ashton B, Dane

SRC Members: Jack R, Taj P, Brody, Jack P, Brendon, Chelsea Y,

Cody K, John and Matthew

Over the next couple of weeks, teachers will be planning for next term. We

are heading into uncharted waters. However; we will stick together and get

through it.

It was always going to be tough trying to fill Sue’s shoes while she was on

leave but I think I have been thrown a big curve ball. At this difficult time, I

would like to personally thank everyone for their support and faith in me and

the rest of the Peterborough team!

The last day of term is Thursday April 9. Please remember to stay in touch

through the website and/or the Facebook page.

HS4 had a busy term. We were working hard in class, learning all about Australia and

focusing on our communication skills. We were also becoming master chefs in the kitchen. We made

yummy shortbread biscuits with Sarah which were sold at the Burra Café. We kept active

participating in our swimming program, playing basketball and bowling, riding bikes and

going for walks around the playground. We also enjoyed walking in the local area on our community

access.

-Tara Mowbray

Congratulations Congratulations to HS4 teacher Tara Mowbray who recently achieved her accreditation as a

proficient teacher. Tara was presented with her award at an assembly held earlier this month.

Rock your socks On March 21 we wore crazy, colourful socks to

school. The SRC organised ‘Rock your Socks’

to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. The

SRC raised $92 from your gold coin donations.

Thank you

SRC and Primary Leaders Induction Assembly In March Peterborough School welcomed in our 2020 Student Representative Council and Primary

School Leaders. It was heartening to see proud families and carers celebrating such a great

achievement with our students. We were very fortunate to have our School Director of Educational

Leadership, Raechel McCarthy with us to address the ceremony and present the official Captain

Badges. A special acknowledgment must be given to our school captains Kiara, Jacob and Rowan

on their outstanding presentation skills during the induction ceremony.

We acknowledge the tremendous effort made by all of our new SRC members. These students were

voted by their peers into the SRC because they demonstrate strong abilities to care for others and

their school environment, give their best efforts, follow school rules and be a good example to other

students. Some of their many roles will include; attending SRC meetings, organising special days at

school, facilitating whole school and special assemblies, representing our school on special outings

and leading the student body. - Cassie Relf

Featured staff

Featured teacher “Hello everyone, my name is Nancy Urban.

This is now my 21st year at Peterborough School. I think I can say I am very lucky to work with such

great staff, parents and of course students. It’s been great to encourage students to be creative

during art clubs and class time. It has been a highlight to see one of my art students win the Aboriginal

Reconciliation Art prize and then be Highly Commended in the second year they entered the

competition. I am responsible to oversee the use and maintenance of the school buses.

In my spare time I enjoy reading, bush walking, coffee, cooking and relaxing. I also enjoy art galleries,

the movies and seeing concerts.”

Featured School Learning Support Officer “Hi my name is Rebecca but at school I’m known as Bec.

I have been an SLSO at Peterborough since 2014 after volunteering for a year. Although I’ve been

fortunate to have been a part of the Peterborough community since I was 2 as my sister Laura was a

student.

Last year I was appointed a permanent position for which I am very grateful. This year I am enjoying

working with HS8 alongside Zach, Lucy and my twin sister Rach. It is confusing for staff but

the students are really great at telling us apart.”

Featured primary classroom

Koalas The Koalas are one of the seven primary classes at Peterborough School. The Koalas are a lovely

bunch of kids and had a great start to the year. They have been enthusiastic about participating

in our weekly activities especially: sensory circuit, craft, rhythm village, name writing, community

access and swimming sessions.

One of the major highlights for the Koalas in term one has been swim school. The students all

developed their water confidence and became little fish happily swimming each day.

The Koalas have all been working hard to develop their communication skills and their individual goals.

Janet and I are so proud of each and every one of them. – Patti Schaus

Mural A beautiful new mural is now a feature in our back playground. The colourful mural was inspired by

two very special long-serving staff members – Principal Sue Corkery and retired teacher Deb McLeod

Variety Zoo Fun Day At the beginning of the month some Year 5, 6, 7 and 8 students had the opportunity to visit the new

Sydney Zoo. It was a very busy day filled with lots of fun viewing all the animals. Our favourite

animals were the meerkats, tiger and crocodile. We also liked the African animals as we walked

along a raised platform to look down on the lions and zebra. Nancy, Zach, Mrs Warren, Bev, Sophie,

Chris and Issy were all very impressed with the behaviour of the twenty students who attended,

Students displayed excellent behaviour at the zoo and while travelling on the buses. We would like

to thank Variety for our zoo passes. We all recommend the new Sydney Zoo!

Library news

We have been very busy planning and organising our digital classroom space. Our table has arrived

and Ben and John have been prepping the walls for us to paint. (see photos below of students using

the original space). Ben purchased some more LEGO and Lee has made up some packs for use in

STEM lessons. Whilst that is all happening students have been building with LEGO during recess

break and they continue to add to their designs each day. We have been displaying their work on

the library bookcase for everyone to see.

We have also purchased our Book Week books so teachers can begin to read those to students next

term. This year the theme is ‘Curious creatures, Wild minds.’ - Sharon Murphy

Retirement Peterborough school would like to wish teacher Mel Davey a happy retirement. After 11 years as a

permanent teacher at Peterborough School Mel has decided to transition to retirement, working only

on a casual basis from the beginning of term 2.

Mel has been such a dedicated, caring and extremely hard-working member of staff during her time

at Peterborough. We are all going to miss Mel’s thoughtfulness and humour very much.
