Goals and AssumptionsMaintaining the core values of the research

library while expanding horizons in response to a rapidly changing environment

Adjusting to the print-to-digital transition: leveraging digital resources while retaining the traditional strengths of legacy collections

Achieving economies of scale whenever possible to maximize limited resources

Adapting our libraries to the new information landscape and patrons’ demands

Sharing Language Expertise in System-wide Processing of Collections in Non-Roman Languages

Reducing redundant cataloging activities by establishing centers of specialization under a cost-sharing model, including shared cataloging of East Asian e-resources

Establishing UC-wide standards and practices, such as automated transliteration, online cataloging training, shelf-ready services

UC-wide efforts to reduce cataloging backlogs

Sharing Language Expertise in System-wide Processing of Collections in Non-Roman Languages

Integrating East Asian technical services with the parent library’s technical services is not currently being contemplated

Functional partitioning will shrink budgets, reduce staff & resources, & generally weaken East Asian Library services

UC-wide Initiative: Shared Print Program

Broaden and deepen UC library collections in the service of research, teaching, patient care & public services

Offer economies not available through traditional models of collection development

Preserve important cultural assets by ensuring persistence over time

UC-wide Initiative: Digital Preservation & Data Curation

UC3, the UC Curation CenterBringing together the expertise and resources of the University to provide high-quality, cost-effective solutions that will enable campus constituencies—museums, libraries, archives, academic departments—to manage, curate, & preserve their information resources

The East Asian Library’s Strategic Position

Deliver quality collections and services in spite of the reduced workforce and budget

Increase efficiency Advocate holistic librarianship; avoid

further reducing staff resources through functional partitioning
