Industry Snapshot

SECTION 3

Page 18: Peter Goudes, MRICS, Partner, Hospitality, NAI Hellas

The Greek tourism industry recorded another good year in 2015 with 1.8 mn more

visitors travelling to Greece compared to the previous year.

The tourism industry faced a number of challenges, including fresh political and

economical instability, the imposition of capital controls, increased taxes and the

refugee crisis.

It was supported, however, by the critical geopolitical environment in the Southern

Mediterranean and the wider European region terrorist crisis.

• After seven years of consecutive decline, average expenditure per overnight stay of

foreign visitors increased in 2015 to €75.10 from €71.60 in 2014.

• Visitors are beginning to travel to Greece more for short vacations or city breaks.

• The country’s hotel stock is being upgraded with the additions of new quality

developments, upgrades of existing units and closing of lower star category hotels,

to meet growing demand for better quality accommodation.
