Over the last year at Peter Becker Community we have been working on a branding project – what it really means when you say that you are

part of Peter Becker Community. During this year we have discovered that everything that happens at Peter Becker is a treasured moment to someone – resident, staff, volunteer, visitor. Just about anyone who spends any time here will have a treasured moment. These are times that just make you smile – they are special and unforgettable and they become a part of your life’s story. So it was no surprise that our new tag line became “Embracing Life’s Treasured Moments.” This takes all the words of our mission statement and turns them into something that you can feel. It is the heart of what we do.

Every day, we see our residents champion the challenges of aging. And when we thought about what words best describe what happens in our health care center, we realized that the best words to describe it were “Compassionate Care, Extraordinary Caring.” This is just what we do. I have always said that our staff does more than just care for our residents – they care about them. And we have also found that our residents care about the staff too. Together we become a community of caring.

In this annual report you will see and read about many of life’s treasured moments and the compassionate care that helps to support those we serve.

As I approach my upcoming retirement, I think back on the many treasured moments that I have had at Peter Becker Community over the last 8 plus years. There are so many that I will be able to take with me when I leave this wonderful place. I have been blessed to work with great staff and a dedicated Board of Directors. I have been thankful every day for the opportunity to serve in this place. Thank you for your continued support of Peter Becker Community, whether it be in terms of time or talent or treasure. I keep you in my prayers daily.

Our mission, based on the Church of the Brethren values of service, integrity, simplicity and love, is to meet the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of all members of the Peter Becker Community. Additionally, we are committed to advocate for affordable housing and related services in partnership with local housing authorities and other community partners to enhance our ability to serve a wider scope of residents.

SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS ARE WORTHY OF SPECIAL ATTENTION. Our special accomplishments this year include having our residents, staff and volunteers model for our new brochure; organizing our

first Senior Winter Olympics; creating a home for the declining honey bee population; recognizing three employees for 30 years of services; and celebrating birthdays for three residents who are 100+.

The Senior Winter Olympics were great fun and included participants from all areas of our campus. Ice fishing was exciting, but the opening and closing ceremonies were especially memorable. For two days this summer professional photographers were on our campus taking in all the beauty of the land and buildings and focusing on our residents and other models enjoying everyday life at Peter Becker. Our cover photo is just one example of residents interacting with others enjoying life. I’d say that’s significant!

Our Green Team sponsored the establishment of honey beehives on our campus. We benefit from this in two ways. The honey bee population is dwindling and this will eventually have a major effect on the sources of foods we take for granted today. The other benefit is that we are using the extracted honey in our dining services and are able to make available small “honey bears” for sale to our residents and staff.

It is pretty significant when we have three staff members who were recognized for 30 of service this year – especially since we have only been in operation for 43 years. We do have a staff member who has been here for 42 of those 43 years. And I just love to talk about our residents who seem to be redefining age. Frank Knerr is 103 – see the photo below; Ella Tweedie still lives in her own apartment at 101 – she didn’t seem to think it was a big deal; and Rose Splendor is still beautiful at 101. It is great to listen to the stories that these folks have to tell.

THESE ARE MOMENTS THAT ARE NOT EASILY forgotten. At the top of the list is a once-in-a-lifetime event for 10 of our veterans. They participated in an all-

expense paid bus trip provided by the Honor Flight Network. This organization transports veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifice. More than 250 veterans and their guardians filled six buses. According to Janice Barndt, “It was just extraordinary how appreciated and respected I felt. There were fire trucks with flags hoisted over the bus route and people everywhere waving flags, saluting and shaking my hand. It was a truly unforgettable experience.”

In the awards category, Sanford Alderfer was given the 11th Annual Adventures in Excellence Award from the Penn Foundation. He was recognized for encouraging others to maximize their God-given potential and for his longevity of service to the community. Dr. Dennis L. Moyer was inducted into the Souderton Area High School Hall of Fame, and 22 employees received awards for service longevity.

Very memorable was the visit by Ali Abbas Apagu, a member of the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria. He spoke to us about the troubles that Christians are facing in Nigeria. Residents responded with prayers and a new understanding.

SWEET MOMENTS HAPPEN NATURALLY WHERE THE

word “home” represents both a feeling and a place. Every day,

our calendars are filled with interesting activities, classes,

clubs, workouts, events and entertainment with one thing in mind –

the well-being of our community members. This year, our residents

had the opportunity to enjoy a fall costume party, have lunch with

Santa, compete in the Senior Winter Olympics, get engulfed in a

weather simulator, paint our CEO into an exhibit for our annual Flower

Show, enjoy a Spring High Tea with friends and family, watch cooking

demonstrations, join an art class, act up, dress up and even sing and

dance. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Life here is sweet because

we make it a point to provide lots of opportunites for connections. The

rest happens naturally between people.

I am so glad that I was provided with a full painting suit to wear when

I was painted by the residents. It was great fun. I then got to dress as a

clown and be an honorary part of the Flower Show Gang. These are the

sweet moments that I will truly miss as I move on to the next stage of

my life – but those moments are sure to continue here at Peter Becker

because that’s just what happens here.

Fun Facts: 293 people volunteered for us

A weather simulator was created on campus to demonstrate things like tornados, hurricanes and rain. There was even a little rainfall in the room. 6. Captain Joe (Monserrat) is shown cruising with Marge Moore and Jean Curry. 7. Artists (L-R) Eleanor Kennedy, Joe Bussman, Joe Pullen, Al Sponagle, Joan and Dan Gallagher took fine arts classes. 8. DefiningMoments

4

DEFINING MOMENTS ARE TIMES WHEN THE ESSENTIAL nature of the organization is revealed. While we are a continuing care retirement community, we are also part of the community that

surrounds us. We realize that our not-for-profit status is a privilege that we need to earn every day. And so we not only continue to serve residents who have run out of funds through no fault of their own, but we also reach out to the greater community. In July, we accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from our friends at Frederick Living. We asked 11 of our residents to pour ice water onto nine incredibly willing team members – all to raise awareness of our human responsibility to reach out and help others in need. Follow the link to our YouTube Channel (on the left hand page) to see the video of this defining moment. Members of our community also participated in a “Help End Alzheimer’s Walk” and built catapults for the local special education program.

For the last several years we have been holding an online auction. A committee of residents, staff and other friends of Peter Becker Community gather to collect donated items to “sell” on the auction. The proceeds raised from the auction are given to local not-for-profit organizations including fire and police departments, food banks, playgrounds and theaters. These funds also help sponsor educational events such as our annual Health & Wellness Fair. It’s our way of being good neighbors in the community we serve.

And while we are tax exempt, for more than 5 years now, we have made Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILOTS) to the township, the county and the school district because we understand it is our responsibility to help support those who support us. We at Peter Becker Community are all about service
