Putting On The Kid GlovesRediscovering my inner childhood.
• I thought this book was going to be easy to write.• I was mistakenly wrong!• Getting the wording and pictures just
right.• Remembering not to alienate your
audience.• Children are primarily visual learners,
but like a great story to go with the pictures.
• I wanted the story to appeal to all ages.• Deeply philosophical moral to story.
• Don't judge other people.• Get both sides of a story before
forming an opinion.
Inspiration.Timeless classics that have stood the test of time.
• Classic Children's Novelists.• Maurice Sendak
• “Where The Wild Things Are”• Eric Carle
• “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”• “The Very Mixed Up
Chameleon.”• Dr. Suess
• “Green Eggs And Ham”
• Checked out materials at the Cirriculum Materials Center at UCF
Piece By Piece, Layer By Layer• All characters composed of many
layers.• I moved each layer around to
create different positions and emotional responses.
• Used GIMP • An open source version of
Photoshop.• Does all the same things, minus
the $500 price tag.
Problems and Pitfalls Encountered.• The Race Against Time
• 40 Hour Project Time Requirement
• Busy Time Of Year• Halloween Week = “Party”
• Real World Commitments Interfere With Project.
• Became difficult to keep on top of other class due dates.
• Frequent Revisions To Story and Graphics.
• Re-learning “kid language.”• I'm never around children.• Researched classic children's
books from UCF's CMC center.
What I Learned From The Project Itself.
•Writing children's books is not easy.• Adopting “kid language” is
challenging if you're not around children often.
•I am a true perfectionist.• I make my art projects top priority
over everything else.
•People of all ages enjoy a good story.• Many positive responses from
people of all age groups.
•You can check out picture books at the UCF Library!
