Preventatives.

With the return of Spring, comes the risk of the not-so-nice flea and tick pests. These pesky pests embed themselves into the skin of your pet to feed on their blood.

Flea bites may be more than an itchy annoyance to some dogs and cats. They can cause flea allergy dermatitis—an allergic reaction to proteins in flea saliva. A pet’s constant scratching can cause permanent hair loss or other skin problems. Fleas feasting on your pet’s blood can lead to anemia and, in rare cases, death.

Ticks can also harm your pet, transmitting infections such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Fever and more. Pets can bring ticks into the home, exposing you and your family to illness from a tick bite. It’s critical to talk about prevention to protect you and your pet and keep these creepy crawlies out of your home!

Prevention is Key! There are many effective flea and tick products your veterinarian can recommend, including products that can be applied directly to your pet’s skin and some disguised with a tasty flavor and given by mouth.

Talk with Your Veterinarian about which product is best for your pet. Certain factors affect the type and dose of the product that can be used, including the age, species, breed, life style and health status of your pet. Your veterinarian should also be aware of all of your pet’s medications when considering the optimal flea and tick preventive for your pet.

Monitor Your Pet for any signs of an adverse reaction including: excessive itching or scratching, skin redness or swelling, vomiting, or any abnormal behavior. If you see any of these signs, contact your veterinarian.

Started in 2015 by animal lover, Tana Labuda, Paws Up 4 Rescue is a no kill, all volunteer animal rescue organization serving Joliet, IL and surrounding areas. They are dedicated and passionate about rescuing any animal from any shelter where overcrowding may lead to euthanasia, as well as those suffering from abuse and/or neglect. A 100% foster based animal rescue, Paws Up relies on their generous volunteers to take the animal into their home and care for them while they await their forever home. They are committed to providing animals with the best care by helping them acclimate to life outside of a shelter and providing them with the necessary vet care. Paws Up strives to help the community by educating the public about

the importance of spaying and neutering, and by encouraging responsible pet ownership.

Paws Up 4 Rescue depends on foster families to help save the lives of unwanted, neglected and ill animals. The more foster families in their network, the more lives can be saved. Fostering is simple. It involves taking a needy dog into your home until his or her new forever home is found. Foster families are responsible for ensuring that the rescued animal will make a good forever pet in someone’s home. More information can be found by visiting www.pawsup4rescue.org. Meet Haley Royko, She Needs Your Help!A 24 year old animal lover and zoology major, Haley was diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease (a genetic condition where cells can’t produce enough energy for the body to function) and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (a debilitating chronic pain disease) during her sophomore year of college. Haley is seeking the help of the Naperville community by raising funds for a service dog. The funds cover the cost of breeding, care, customized training and continued support of the service dog team. In getting a service dog, Haley hopes to return to school to complete her degree and gain the independence every young adult should have. The service dog would help with basic tasks such as retrieving and opening doors, bracing Haley if she starts to fall, helping pull her wheelchair, and helping with pain and anxiety, especially during her hospital visits. To support Haley, visit her GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/RoykoServiceDog or make a donation at Springbrook Animal Care Center.

Keep Your Pets Safe During

Spring Cleaning!Be sure to keep all cleaners and chemicals out of your pets’ way! Even all-natural cleaning products can contain chemicals that may be harmful to pets. The key to using them safely is to read and follow label directions for proper use and storage. If home improvement is part of your plan, be aware that products such as paints,

mineral spirits and solvents can also be toxic to your pets. Carefully read all labels to see if the product is safe to use around your furry friends. Also, be cautious of physical hazards, including nails, staples, insulation, blades and power tools. It may be wise to confine your dog or cat to a pet-friendly room during home improvement projects.
